A grand final spot is on the line for Brisbane and Carlton as they lock horns at the Gabba in a preliminary final blockbuster. Join The Roar for live scores from 5:15pm (AEST).

Just three teams remain in the race for the AFL premiership and one more will be eliminated this afternoon when the Lions and Blues meet in Queensland.

It has been yet another solid season from Chris Fagan’s men, built off the back of a still improving defence and a dangerous front half led by Charlie Cameron, Joe Daniher and Eric Hipwood. Lachie Neale has again been critical, with Josh Dunkley and Hugh McCluggage his supporting crew around the contest.

Jack Payne is a significant loss for the home side heading into the match, yet otherwise, the Lions look settled across the field and the return of Darcy Gardiner in the back three means they have a capable replacement.

After early season chaos at Carlton, with fans furious that the improvement which they had hoped for not arriving under Michael Voss, the team suddenly took off into the stratosphere. Staying the course and sticking to a simple process-driven approach finally turned the Blues around a corner that fans have longed for, and wins against Sydney and Melbourne in the finals have proven that Carlton now have the steel to compete on the big days against the best teams.

Harry McKay, Jack Martin and Jordan Boyd have been recalled, with Matthew Owies among those unlucky to miss.

Prediction

If we thought last night’s one-point win for Collingwood over GWS was special, it is possible that this match could in fact take things to another level. Charlie Curnow is poised to produce a career-defining match to add to an already stellar finals series.

Something tells me this match will be on a knife-edge heading into the final term and see the Lions running away in the final minutes off the back of a midfield that eventually wears down Patrick Cripps and Adam Cerra.

Carlton supporters going for the Pies? What has the World Come to?

Ok, I didn't say they inflated Gabba crowds. My local Aussie Rules club is one of the oldest in Sydney, the inner West Magpies. If I go and watch Rules there I am the only person. All the big screens are dedicated to League. It will have nothing on for the GF, even though its moniker is playing. Oh, and comparing Rules to League is a cop out, because League is an abomination only supported by low lifes and the alcohol damaged. Union shoots itself in the foot on a daily basis. Soccer is the dominant sport with events and on the ground. The fact is Rules should be dominate in NSW. As an example see the SMH and Daily Telegraph digital sites, not one mention of AFL. News dot com has one story on Vic bias. All terrible media sites but demonstrate the situation. The VFL is an Orwellian organisation that likes to present a false narrative of their success. Soccer will easily surpass them in our lifetime, as at the moment the VFL have simply done a Steven Bradbury.

He was very disappointing Don. For a player with so many chances he should have scored so many more goals.

Could it be that at 5 goals to 0, the broadcasters would have been more likely to show the supporters of the team with 5 goals? BTW did you realise that half the shots were of people at Princess Park? (Completely unnecessary in my opinion - just show to crowd that are there, not somewhere else.)

Wow, that’s a whole lot of pent up anger. I don’t see how splitting tickets between members of 2 competing teams is VFL bias. It has always happened that way, as I mentioned. It doesn’t matter which state it is in. So there is no bias there. AFL inflates participation rates and crowds. Really? Any evidence. On one hand you say the AFL inflate crowds but on the other Brisbane members can’t get a ticket. Interest is dropping in SA and ACT. Again any facts to share? I will tell you one thing, the NRL had to give away tickets to the prelim in Sydney. I know which sport I’d rather be. If you don’t watch the Grand Final that is your loss. Have a good time at the cinema or whatever you chose to do.

This is just another example of VFL bias. The fact is we never introduced a national competition back in the 80s. There is only one team from 18 that came from outside the VFL, Port Adelaide. There has also remarkably never been an amalgamation. South Melbourne was a soft relocation that resulted in the loss of the club. Brisbane was a take over of Fitzroy and not an amalgamation. If the WAFL, SANFL, and most of the VFL teams amalgamated with new teams from Tas, NSW, QLD comps we would have had a much stronger competition and Fitz and SM would have survived. In the long run the VFL won the battle but lost the war. Aussie Rules is losing interest in SA, ACT and is not even in the top five sports in Tas. It has not made serious in roads in NSW. The VFL inflates their participation rates and crowds in QLD and NSW. Is there one major event, named award, or game, or administrative function that occurs outside of Victoria? No. And now even the fans can't attend their own games! Carlton were given the courtesy of an earlier game to catch the flight home, why wasn't this done for Port Adelaide? I think Brisbane will win next week but will have to play 10% better to do it. I certainly won't be watching the game.

I understand the argument, but my view is a home final shouldn't lock out opposition supporters. The home ground advantage is enough and if a member of an opposing club is prepared to travel interstate to see their team, then they should have the opportunity to purchase a ticket. Finals can be pretty rare for some. This arrangement has always been the case in the AFL, it is not just something Brisbane members have had to endure. There is a home and away season and then there is finals.

I think the Dees were unlucky with injuries at the worth time to be fair... I also wonder if they kept Jackson, they would probably be playing the grand final ?

Huh? Mate I respect that you answered that argument decent and respectfully so kudos for that. But how on earth can you disagree with his statement? It’s like saying you disagree with organ donors or charity workers?? There isn’t actually an argument against what he is saying. Fans didn’t get to watch their own team, in their own state at their own home ground play a preliminary final!!!! Now they have even less chance of watching them in a grand final! What is there to disagree with??? Sorry if I’m wrong but quick guess, you are either; 1. A Melbourne club supporter (not Geelong) 2. An MCC member or 3. Both

Yep totally agree. Let’s see if they offer 36% of the MCG to lions supporters. The pies are the higher ranked team though, so this year is ok. Apart from that though, you are correct. This should be a massive story. It actually looked like there were more blues supporters at the game in Brisbane. Truly disrespectful to all those hard core Brisbane supporters. They already know they won’t get a ticket to the grand final in Melbourne, yet have to give up their seats at their own home ground, to people from Melbourne. That might be the biggest game that lions supporters will ever get to see in their whole life. Sickening really

I am hoping third time lucky. McStay is a big lost but I don’t think he is indispensable to the Pies game plan. As I have said all year, DeGoey is our most important player and he is coming good at the right time. I think the Pies at the MCG during the day will be a different kettle of fish.

Let's see if we can rebut your argument in the one that really matters. It will be very hard for my beloved Pies because they have strengths in every part of the ground. Brisbane to win, but anything can happen on Grand Final day.
