Match preview:

The Brisbane Lions have waited ten years for a return to finals, and now it’s here! They host the Richmond Tigers at the Gabba in the last of four AFL Finals matches this week. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 7:25pm AEST.

What a season it has been for Brisbane. They won just five matches last year, but have a nice combination of factors has seen them rise rapidly up the ladder.

One is the natural improvement of their young players. Hugh McCluggage represents this as well as anyone, coming close to All Australian selection this year, but he’s just one of a very talented bunch.

The other big factor has been their brilliant recruiting. Lachie Neale is the headliner here, but players like Jarryd Lyons, Marcus Adams, Lincoln McCarthy and more have all had an impact this year.

Of course, you’ve also got to note that Brisbane have had a beautiful run with injury in season 2019 – potentially giving them just the right run of luck they need for a real shot at the premiership.

Daniel Rich will be the only player in the team tonight to have played a finals match for Brisbane, but Luke Hodge, Robinson, Charlie Cameron, McCarthy, Neale and Lyons have all played in September before.

Richmond on the other hand have had a remarkable 2019 and at this stage are probably premiership favourites thanks to a run home that saw them win their last nine matches in a row.

Despite being hit hard by injury particularly early in the season, the Tigers weathered the storm and have made it through to a top-four spot.

The big question for them is this: can they win their first ever finals match outside of Victoria? While they’ve never gotten it done before, this is only their third opportunity.

The Tigers were the better of these two sides by 27 points a fortnight ago when they met in Round 23, but don’t expect that to be a huge factor tonight. This one is alive and well.

Jack, we gave WC a 6-2 goal lead at quarter time and clawed our way back in the dry. Enjoy your trip to G against Geelong, and if you win enjoy the trip back before you get put back in your place on preliminary finals night before 100000 Tiger Army.

Barring a few lucky frees to the Tigers , the eagles would’ve won that game against them.

We will see Ducks, you have to get past Eagles or Cats and your preliminary final Demons first

How is winning by 47 points stealing it in a photo finish?

It's an experience the Lions needed. We have played better than anyone thought we would and have had some great wins and games this year. Am very proud of the whole team. We have another chance next week, but no matter what happens we've had a very good year. Will be interesting to see how they go with the drafts this year and what type of player they choose. Well done Lions, proud of you's all!!

Yes of course. The luckiest 47 point point I’ve ever witnessed too. They stole it in a photo finish.

A home Prelim against a non Victorian team, eagles fans might be able to snap up 15K tickets but good luck stopping 80K Richmond fans on the night.

Nah, WC left plenty of goals on the park. Tigers played well and we saw their best in the wet while WC was well off after quarter time and still only lost by a kick - and Nic Nat didn’t play.

Would prefer, and want, the Eagles. We left plenty of goals on the park last time we played you. We've got you guys.

Yeah, not as convincing as the eetum alive time folks will make out. Brisbane will be better for the experience. Can't win finals kicking at goals like that and they didn't handle some poor early umpiring well. Richmond were super efficient going inside 50 when Brisbane were on top too. Able to play their chaotic messy football going forward from kick ins after lions missed shots. Richmond were good after half time, should be a pies tigers granny now. As an eagles fan I'm glad they might be going back to the G in week 3 rather than up to Brisbane.

Who would they prefer? Cats or Eagles as their next opponents?

Be realistic, and holistic, the Tigers didn’t handle the Lions pressure in the 1st quarter and the Lions didn’t take their chances. Tigers deserved the win but the margin flattered them.

WC lost to them by one kick a few weeks ago at the G, in the wet. WC will play them in the prelim, if they get past the Cats. No question that it will be very difficult but it’s winnable. Margin should have been much closer tonight. Lions made so many mistakes and couldn’t kick straight. Their forward is too young for mine and they need a few more years.

What an amazingly odd game of football. Did anyone else watch that and feel like Brissie perhaps played better. For the 5 minutes before half time and especially the 1st half of the 3rd quarter the Tigers were dominant but for the rest of the game Brissie seemed to be the better side, but just kept stuffing up at the end of every solid play. Not just scoring shots either, silly turnovers in front of goal. The commentators are carrying on how dominant Richmond were, but I reckon they got a bit lucky there. At the very least that should’ve been a 2 goal win. Class prevailed I suppose

Brisbane have no hope next week against GWS. If they do get through Pies will do something similar like tonight to them.
