Two teams looking to finish the year on a high go head-to-head as the Carlton Blues play the Adelaide Crows at Metricon Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores from 1:05pm (AEST).

The Blues are out of the finals race, but they showed an enormous amount of spirit on Tuesday night to erase a 39-point deficit against Sydney to claim a rousing five-point win. They’re trying to build for the future and will hope to finish 2020 off in a good vein of form.

After looking like they desperately needed the season to end a small while ago, the Crows suddenly want another month before the season ends. They’re still all but destined for the wooden spoon but, with two straight wins, now have something to build off going into the offseason.

Carlton broke a run of five straight losses to Adelaide last year with a 27-point win at the MCG. They haven’t defeated the Crows away from Melbourne since 2010.

Sounds about right. But if Freo were able to beat north by ten goals, anything can happen!

Pete, although finals are now out of contention it hasn’t been an overly disappointing season. Apart from a couple of games we have been in position to win most games - some we have and some we haven’t. I know injuries have been a problem for most clubs including Carlton and I know if we had Charlie, Marchbank, Newman, Kreuz & JSOS available for games this season we would have been better. We have shown in most games that when we play well we are capable of beating anyone, but it is just the lack of consistency over four quarters that has been our problem. We are just lacking a couple of experienced outside mids and a consistent goal kicking small forward. I don’t believe we need to go to the draft this year or next so we should be able to offer up early picks to try to grab the type of players we need. Our biggest problem this year has been our connection between our midfield and forward 50 and due to the training restrictions we have not been able to improve that area. If we can get the quality type players we need I think we can move forward next year.

Pete, although we obviously miss on playing finals it hasn’t been an overly disappointing season. Most people would have had Carlton in the bottom 4 but we have shown this year we are capable of playing very good football. It has just been the lack of consistency over four quarters that has been our big problem. In just about all games we have been in winnable positions, some we have won and some we have lost. I know injuries are a concern for most clubs and at Carlton I know we would be a better side with Charlie, Marchbank, Newman, Kreuze and JSOS available. This COVID stuff has affected all clubs and for Carlton it has not helped in our connection into our forward 50. This has been our biggest problem and we have shown no improvement because of the training restrictions. Going forward I believe we have a strong group but we are definitely lacking midfield strength and goal kicking ability. Harry has shown in the last few games how good he can become, add Charlie and a good small forward a la Papley and we will improve in that area. Setterfield has been a big improver in the midfield whilst Cripps has dropped off a bit probably due to a sore body, but we definitely need a couple of strong outside midfielders. I am looking forward in seeing what Kemp brings us next year and would be delighted to grab Williams from GWS.

I would have said 10 wins a normal season would be a pass which probably equates to 8 this season. Looks like we may end up 1 short.

Thanks Col, You know better than me with the Blues, I’m genuinely asking for your direction based on what’s turned out another disappointing year. What’s your pass mark in 2021, assuming a normal season?

I did a rough calculation ...assuming both are beaten, North needs to lose by around 80 points more than the Crows

I'd give Owies another year and give him a prolonged run, he's come good in the 2's this year. Unfortunately Eddie is done, he seems more interested in having a laugh with the opposition. I'd keep Macreadie and Ben Silvagni in case Jones or Weiters goes down. Love Simmo but it's time. Dow and O'Brien need to be traded and McGovern just needs to be somewhere else like he has been all year.

Agree. I think Eddie and Simmo probably go. They’re ultimately just taking spots on our list that we need to develop others. Those five you mention are definitely ones we could trade in a package deal. They’ve disappointed to date but still have potential trade value. A pick and a player to get Papley maybe. We can get Zach Williams and a midfielder. There are a number of options out there to improve our list. Don’t need to be chasing pricey elites. Lions and to a lesser degree the Saints have shown it can be done.
