Match result:

Carlton have beaten Adelaide by 27 at the MCG, in a superb performance on a Saturday afternoon.

Adelaide, excluding a strong opening 10 or so minutes, were flat and unable to catch a rampant Blues side. That’s a Blues side who weathered every storm during the afternoon, and were never caught.

But the bigger story, for mine, was some brilliant individual performances. Patrick Cripps – 39 touches, 19 clearances and a goal – was nothing short of breathtakingly good, while Marc Murphy and Kade Simpson’s 31 touches contributed well.

Levi Casboult booted three goals, while Andrew Phillips won his ruck battle against Reilly O’Brien. Brad Crouch was admirable with 30 touches, and Tex Walker booted three of his own majors, but it was the Bluebaggers who deservedly won the match.

Final score
Carlton Blues 13.9.87
Adelaide Crows 9.6.60

Match preview:

An unlikely upset may be upon us, as a resurgent Carlton outfit host a struggling Adelaide Crows at the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 2:10pm (AEST).

Carlton are running on euphoria, spirit and pure happiness at the moment. That does sound like an odd thing to say about a side 16th on the ladder with five clashes to go, but it’s true.

Since sacking former coach Brendon Bolton before Round 12, the Blues have won four clashes – including two in a row, cumulating in last week’s clash against the Gold Coast.

So, they’ll head into this one in a good mindset – and with confidence.

The Crows, for their part, are – tenuously – still in the eight, but a horrible fadeout against Essendon last week saw them lose grip of a seemingly secured four points.

That is the non-negotiable aim for this one: they simply have to win, or face another week of heavy media scrutiny.

It’s going to be an enjoyable game to watch; Carlton’s honest midfield should come close to matching Adelaide’s midfield unit led by the Crouch Brothers; one of whom is likely to be tagged by Ed Curnow.

Speaking of Curnows, there’ll be no Charlie (out for the year), leaving the Blues’ premier forward hopes to rest on Harry McKay.

I’m intrigued for a mini-battle between him and, presumably, Daniel Talia (complimented by Jacob Weitering or Liam Jones taking on Josh Jenkins at the other end).

Both sides have made some bold selection calls headed into this afternoon’s clash. Carlton have made one change; influential ruckman Matthew Kruezer will be managed with Andrew Phillips coming into the side.

Adelaide have made three changes, led by a big call in dropping Eddie Betts. Betts is joined in purgatory by Hugh Greenwood and Alex Keath, the latter of whom has been ‘managed’.

Third-gamer Tyson Stengle replaces Betts, Andy Otten and Patrick Wilson return for the other duo.

Prediction
There’s a legitimate, and kind of appealing, upset factor in this one. Carlton have been in good form, Adelaide have not.

But this game is just too important for the South Australians for them to possibly drop. I’ll tip them, with some confidence, but my confidence might rapidly dissipate by the time we reach the first break.

Crows to win, by two goals and some change.

Adelaide by 13 points

I hope you're right Macca. Especially with Lyon

The footy show said today Roos and Lyon are out of the frame, Clarkson is the big fish. For me Teague or Ratten are the ones for me but given the players seem to have bought into Teague message he will take some beating

Not cocky at all, I was only wondering where you were with your smart alec arrogant questions regarding other clubs this week.

It was planned after the suspension Kane. You're pretty cocky after a 6 win season. Don't get too ahead of yourself.

Not sure how it could be a planned break, he'd be playing now if he didn't get suspended

I hope we do sign Teague up and that the media are wrong on us chasing a "big fish" like Lyon or Roos because they will only take us back with their defensive mindsets

Good to see your OK. The team that played on Friday minus DeGoey, that is not pretty. Lucky you have Suns Melbourne and Adelaide next. Can only go up the ladder. But it will be hard to progress in the finals after first round.

Fair enough Kane. Personally I couldn’t care less about him on a club sanctioned, family paid for, planned break, but go your hardest if you want.

Sign Teague up now Macca, you are looking good and may well beat us to the next flag. 2018 was a shot at stealing one, 2019 is stuffed for the Pies. 20 players injury or suspension now. Our performance team are clearly incompetent.

A lot of injury excuses coming out of Collingwood but when you have blokes like Reid, Wells, Elliott, Moore and the like who have been injured for 5 years then you can’t blame injuries. Stephenson you can’t talk about because it was utter stupidity with what he done and there’s no excuse, Buckley should have had a crack at him mid week when he was showing himself off on holidays having a great time while his “mates” are busting their ass but instead he cuddled him. The media always after every game say something about injuries but never say anything about maybe it’s personnel including fitness department which I believe is the Eddie factor. 5 years of supposed worst injury list isn’t unlucky, it’s bad management so injuries should never be mentioned IMO.

De Goey, Phillips and Quaynor all out for season Kane. That’s it, I give up on 2019, we will be lucky to field a side next week. Your Blues are doing well, you should be proud. I tipped them to win 7 in my ladder forecast, will be pretty close.

Can tell Carlton won and the Pies lost, no sly questions or comments from Pete.

Teague has to be the front runner now. If the current form holds for the remainder of the year he should get a two year contract. Saves a lot of cash on getting an existing high profile coach and probably for same or better results given the current momentum the team has.

Can't see the Crows playing finals after their recent performances. And if they do they will only be making up the numbers. Time for a serious review. The Crows list management has been diabolical in recent seasons. They have a bunch of oldies running around or sitting on the side lines such as Jenkins, Betts, Walker, Lynch etc and then they recruit another oldie in Gibbs who isn't good enough to get a game. And they ignore young local talent like Connor Rosie who is picked up in the off season by the Power. The Power are very inconsistent but they have a lot more upside than the Crows and that's due to some creativity in their list management over the off season. The club has to bit the bullet and let the five mentioned go and start rebuilding. This going to take time given how poorly they have managed their list with all ageing at the same time. About the only positive is the form of the young ruckman Reilly O'Brien who has taken the place of Sam Jacobs. Serious questions need to be asked about whether Pyke is the right man for the coaching job as he has been responsible for this mess.

30 disposals, 16 of them contested and 7 clearances. Not bad for an 18yo. If he can improve his disposal efficiency (60% today) he will definitely be a top 10 player. Rising Star award is a certainty.

He's a young Cripps, hard at it and in and under. Not much of him but he shirks nothing. He took a great mark in the backline in the last quarter when Adelaide were coming, didn't flinch.
