To have any shot at finals, the Carlton Blues simply have to defeat a young Sydney Swans side who’ve been plucky of late. Join The Roar for live scores from 8:10pm (AEST).

After looking like the frontrunners to steal eighth spot, two second-half fadeouts in as many matches have just about put Carlton’s season to bed. In what had been an encouraging year of improvement, a goalless second half against Collingwood and a one-goal-to-four second half against GWS may have seen their luck run out.

Sydney were never going to threaten for finals in 2020, but their effort has virtually never waned all season and they’ve stolen two huge upset wins over their last four matches – a 41-point shellacking of the Giants in Perth and Thursday’s 21-point stunner against Melbourne. They’ll be hoping to keep their foot on the pedal until season’s end.

The Blues notched a seven-point win at the SCG in the last meeting between these sides, but their recent record against the Swans is awful. They haven’t won consecutive matches against Sydney since 2011, losing ten of 12 matches since.

No wasn’t there Parkside. I think SPS started on the bench so he probably played around the ground. He definitely didn’t seem to play deep defence.

Macca, if you got your wishes I think some new silverware would go with it.Your big on statistics and analysis how many Carlton games have the Blues outscored the opposition by six or more goals in part of the match .In the fifty odd years I have followed footy generally I have found that sides who play in alot of close matches one year are better the next and Carlton certainly have done that this year.

For a chip packet? You get SFA for him. Kruezer is the one I think might have a bit of trade value.

One could make a case that last quarter last night was one of the worst quarters of the year. It become quite laughable watching some of the skill errors and decision making of both sides. Carlton certainly like to do things the hard way.

Were you at the game Col? I thought SPS was still playing half back. He was further up the ground because we defended that way and the ball was mainly in our forward half

If you guys could start putting whole games together consistently, you'd be downright dangerous! It doesn't seem long til everything clicks.

He seemed to be playing on the wing tonight. For me that is a better position for him. Only thing he needs to do is not always look to kick it short. Although his disposal efficiency is good he needs to look to gain more meterage.

Cotrell reminds me so much of Robinson. I think we have found one there.

See Rozee (Kane Cornes best player in the draft of 2018) didn't even make the squad for the best 22 under 22. Walsh' ability to hit the scoreboard in the second half of the year has been impressive. Was ther a different role for SPS tonight?

Macca, McGovern didn’t have to be defended tonight almost unsighted. I can hardly remember him even contesting a mark let alone taking one. Seems bereft of confidence.

Agree on Cottrell that was a great moment. Walsh is definitely a centre square player. I do like the coaching to put him on the wing this year though.

Interested to see the take on the 2018 draft. Walsh was clearly the best player last year and is now the best player this year. Also seems to still have huge upside. Lastly, will be better again next year with full quarters. Anyone want to bet against him?

I only got to watch the first quarter then kept track of the scores in the phone. Hopefully I'll get to watch it tomorrow. From the stats though McGovern seems hard to defend and yet again we dominated inside 50's but struggled to score.

McGovern is not worth a position in the side with the performances he has produced this year, would rather play Kennedy before him. Walsh played on the ball tonight instead of the wing and although he has had a great season he showed he needs to be on the ball permanently. What a great thrill for Cottrell to kick the winning goal - a Blues supporter growing up he showed what it meant to him.

Agree on both points. Although I didn’t think we were beaten in general play in first quarter and a half - just didn’t move ball quick enough inside 50 I thought. Then they got us on the rebound. I’m struggling to defend McGovern based on the last two games (and I’ve been a fan). Thoughts?

Extraordinary the last quarter, it seemed like there were no umpires at all. A general free for all. Hilarious.
