It’s an intriguing Friday night clash, as the Collingwood Magpies take on the Western Bulldogs at the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:50pm AEST.

As we head into Round Four, one might’ve expected it would be Collingwood to be heavy favourites coming into tonight’s clash. After all, they were the grand finalists from last year.

But not so fast. The Western Bulldogs have impressed to start the season – last week’s shock loss to Gold Coast the exception – and they’ll arrive at the ‘G with confidence.

Nonetheless, it’s the Pies who head into this one as (relatively slight) favourites – although their form looks fairly iffy at the minute.

A comfortable win against Richmond has been bookended by losses against Geelong and West Coast, meaning they need to win this one to even out their early season results.

It’s the Pies midfield and attack that should comfortably shade the Bulldogs: should being the keyword there. But the Dogs have shown a fair bit of resilience this season, and I’d expect much of the play to be close and contested.

There’s one simple change apiece for the two teams this evening, and they’re arguably fairly big ones. The Pies’ have omitted Levi Greenwood after last week’s loss, and included Travis Varcoe in tonight’s squad.

The Bulldogs have omitted young Lewis Young (pun sort of intended), whilst including star player Jason Johannisen in this squad.

Prediction
Neither team would be anywhere near pleased with last week’s losses, which should lead to a fiery Friday night clash.

But the Pies are stacked with talent, and while the Bulldogs are going to be tough opponents, I’d expect the Pies to break away late to edge out a win.

Buckley alluded to the move earlier in the year Col as an education for his game into becoming part of the midfield group. He talks about us (and most sides) having 10-12 midfielders at any given time including the conventional mids, ones resting on the Pine, Wings and "high half forwards". He wants him to use his pace as a high half forward but he has looked a little lost up there. In reality though I believe it's because of the arrival of Jamie Elliott. Elliott, at 5 foot ten is really a finisher and if not a deep forward he gets lost. It could be robbing Peter to pay Paul. Can we have Cox, Elliott and De Goey all as deep forwards and as such who gets shunted up? Stephenson, J Thomas and Hoskin-Elliott when he returns I suppose. Our success last year was built around Thomas, Hoskin, De Goey and Stephenson all contributing along with Cox and Mihocek. Jamie Elliott's return has us still trying to find that chemistry.

That was last year Pete.

But not an easy win. if it wasn't for the Dogs inaccuracy early on, the Pies would have had to fight a lot harder. There was certainly an air of disinterest that I found baffling. DeGoey can play a lot better, but his kicking was dire last night. Back to the twos

Pete, why are they playing Stephenson higher up the ground? He is very dangerous around goals and I would be playing him De Goey and Elliott deep forward.

What a shame Matti. Double or nothing Lions against Pies , go on do it, we are rubbish.

Yep, umpires are influencing results.

I'm on record as saying Eagles should have had the GF done and dusted by the time of the Maynard block but they hadn't and we will never know what would have happened if the free was paid. Maybe the Eagles still win? Who knows. What is strange is that GFs are umpired differently to the rest of the year.

What's that got to do with Pies v Dogs 6x6?

The umpires are routinely influencing results now. It's become the norm.

True. I thought we finally got our game going in the last qtr. Hopefully build on that next week.

The hawks fans are probably thinking the same thing in round 2 when Sicily and O'meara got pinned for nothing in critical stages of the game. There are 50/50 calls all game and sometimes your not always on the right end of it.

We are sadly out of form Dean. We need to get back to what we did last year.

I'm flicking off neutral footy games a lot this year Col. I still believe footy is in trouble. Most games are just dour this year.

Don't mind a contentious free kick that doesn't result in a free kick rather than a 'tiggy-touch-collingwood' free where it ends up with the umpires having more influence on the game than the players. Last night Collingwood received at least three goals from unsubstantiated free kicks, especially ones to Grundy for ruck infringements which had no influence on the play but the free kick certainly did on the game.

Very underwhelming game until the last 15 minutes, it actually looked like that for most of the game no one wanted to be there or win.
