A rejuvenated Fremantle Dockers outfit host last year’s grand finalists the Collingwood Magpies in what could be an exciting pre-season hit-out at Joondalup’s HBF Arena. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 6:40pm (AEDT).

Collingwood made a rapid ascendancy into premiership contention last season, making it all the way to the final Saturday in September. Alas, they failed to top the West Coast Eagles.

But they’re back today, against their grand final opponents’ chief rivals: Fremantle, who for their part weathered injury and ineptitude to record an eight-win season that never reached glamorous heights.

Both teams made some major personnel changes last year, with Fremantle extensively changing their team. Gone is Lachie Neale, in are talented forwards Jesse Hogan and Rory Lobb.

Those two acquisitions will play in this afternoon’s clash for their debuts in purple, as will 2018 draftee Brett Bewley and former Bomber Travis Colyer.

These additions add a long-missing flair to Fremantle’s often maligned forward structure, so this’ll be the first chance to see just how well that newly rejuvenated structure performs.

Fremantle are missing some important players, though. Nat Fyfe’s not playing – out with injury – whilst fellow midfield stalwart Connor Blakey will also miss, as will Aaron Sandilands and his protege Sean Darcy. Add the removal of Neale from the squad’s midfield, the midfield potentially looks much weaker than their optimal side.

Collingwood, for their part, have produced a squad that features thirteen players from last September’s grand final side. Among those missing are Jordan De Goey, Mason Cox, Adam Treloar and Jeremy Howe. They will, however, debut Jordan Roughead in the black and white for the first time, and (re-)debut Dayne Beams in his arrival back at the club. Talented draftee Isaac Raynor will also play.

Prediction
This is a hard pick. Both sides have plenty of talent playing today, but both are also missing plenty of their best and most optimal squads. Collingwood just seems that little more settled, though, and Fremantle’s much-hyped forward structure is yet to be tested properly, so I’ll be reluctantly tipping the visitors. By a small margin.

Collingwood by 14 points.

Simply if Ross perseveres with Ballantyne and Matera you will never win against quality opposition. You might get away with it against a depleted North Melb.or GCS but Eagles ? Time for Crowden, North and Schultz.

Really ! i 50's ? Read what i said @ 12-28 pm " Freo WON the clearances and i/50s'' Lobb dominated the clearances by foot and H/B he actually crumbed the Pies tap outs...........Watch the replay. They lost because Taberner, Ballantyne, Matera and others were soundly beaten they simply did not take advantage of 60 i/50s. Cox was the only bright light. 11 goals is not enough.

How many years did that log Sandilands dominate hit outs only for Fremantle to split the clearances. Half the time he would hit it straight to the opposition. Guy lacks touch and is a liability around the ground.

You really are desperate to keep it off the i50's aren't you? - You can look at list management like keeping a large stock portfolio. There is always room for a higher risk/payoff stock or even a sentimental one that's delivered time and time again. - It's fantasy to say Darcy won't develop at the same pace if he's splitting his time between AFL and WAFL. There are multiple potential scenarios around Darcy's development anyways. Besides, Darcy's still growing into his body as is Meek, so there's every chance of them being injured quite a bit this year. - i50's?

It was a training drill for Collingwood. Freo had a lot at stake.

Talking of fantasy, if you really think Sandilands is going to take Freo into premiership contention you are living in la -la land. Darcy is the one who needs as much exposure as possible. And what about Meek? played a game in JLT last year, these kids are the future Clinging to a injury prone 36 yo who has had no impact is not the road to go down.

This time of year is made for experimenting and seeing how things work in that forward line. They were likely unsure of how long Lobb would be rucking for too. – Seeing how Taberner and Cox might go in a semi-dinky-di game, both head-to-head and working together, would’ve been useful as they’re the centre of a number of questions. While Hogan and Taberner were quite free-ranging in where they got to and add to that Hogan sitting out the best part of a half of footy, I could easily see the reasoning that stacking it with talls was the way to go. – Switkowski going out so early only added to any possible imbalance, given his form as a speedy pressure forward. – Would be great to see North get a run next week, even just for a taster.

Still nothing on i50’s? You haven’t lost your deep devotion to them, have you? – You still love your cherry-picking though. It’d be nice if teams could actually to cherry-pick what parts of the game count or don’t, rather than just being an exercise in fantasy. Maybe Freo could’ve cherry-picked everything up to 5 minutes into the last quarter and they would’ve “taken the sheep station”. – Mum on i50’s still?

He actually said he stagnated for a period, but now is progressing at a more rapid rate.

Dalgety -Re-Ruck Taps.....The most overrated stat in the game absolutely meaningless ! Freo lost the taps but WON the Clearances and inside/50 as you said. Did you not notice how many times Lobb cleared the bounce downs by foot or hand . Lobb was clearly much more effective than Grundy he was outstanding. Try watching the game more closely........... This is why Sandilands is overrated he wins all the taps because he is so tall but 70% of his taps are sharked by the opposition.

Ross said Sandilands calf has stagnated, and there is no time frame on his return. Sadly it is looking like he Bennell and S.Hill are going to spend a lot of time in rehab this year.

Ridiculously tall Steve, Forget Sandi (hes shot) Darcy ruck, Hogan and Lobb pick themselves. Cox or Taberner one or the other no way both. On yesterdays game it looks like Cox. Would love to see Schultz and North replace deadwood in Ballantyne and Matera, Ross would not risk that though he will stick with them until the damage is done. Crowden as you mention is also a way better option.

Thats kind of our thing anyway...think 2018 De Goey, Hoskin, Thomas, Stephenson, cameos from Varcoe and the resting mids.

I agree. Collingwood were ordinary, very slow start, then were a 10 goal better team without much effort.

Tucker surprised with his efforts. Obviously sees a spot with Neale out Cox was good but how do you have Cox, Lobb, tabs and Hogan in the one team, then have Darcy or Sandi as well. I think Dermie commented on Freo being huge out on the paddock when you looked at Pearce, Logue, Hamling, Jones, Cox, Lobb, Tabs, Hogan then Sandi and Darcy in the wings. And our "mids" of Mundy and Fyfe being 190+ Probably too tall in the forward line yesterday. Who I'd like to see get a crack against West Coast is North on the ball or sweeping across half back, Macca as a lead up forward and Crowden as a pressure forward.

Hahaha... Yeah it's real sheep station's stuff in the JLT. - But no word on the i50's? I thought that was the measure as far as you were concerned, more than W/L?

Unfortunately, it seems Switkowski sustained a hammy to some degree, not sure how severe it is at this stage. - But all up a bit of a cobweb blower, with new forward line, new game plan and a somewhat cobbled together midfield it's going to be a work in progress and by extension ups and downs. I'd say tidying up the way they go into the forward 50 will be top of their list of things to fix. - Brayshaw was very promising in the midfield wasn't he? Cox continues to be a very exciting prospect, Tucker really good too.

It's quite disturbing for Fremantle and their new forward. It was a walk in the park for Collingwood. Fremantle had a lot to play for but couldn't execute.
