The season resumes for both the Gold Coast Suns and West Coast Eagles as the two sides clash at Metricon Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:40pm (AEST).

With a serious premiership contender being pitted against the unbackable wooden spoon favourites, this one could get ugly quickly.

For all the offseason hype surrounding Gold Coast’s new assistance package, draft haul and free agency signings, it was the same old story against Port Adelaide as they managed just 29 points in a comprehensive 47-point loss. There were definitely bright spots, but the gulf in class between them and the rest of the AFL appears large.

The Eagles, on the other hand, had little trouble seeing off Melbourne at home, holding their 2018 preliminary victims goalless in the first quarter before cruising to a 27-point win. Big trade acquisition Tim Kelly didn’t set the world alight, but he helped Luke Shuey (27 disposals) and Andrew Gaff (30) get off the chain in an ominous sign of things to come.

Predictably, the Suns have an awful record against West Coast. Their last two meetings at home have resulted in a three-point win and a draw, but the other nine clashes overall have been losses with an average margin of 54 points.

sounds like the sorta stuff u can do when youre younger but eventually have to give away as u hopefully mature & get more sensible (& less resilient). imagine having tom mitchell & lachie neale .... be a tough day

The Norm Smith winner got the only full stubby scoll. I always dreaded getting an onballer.

A mixture of drink and big drink, depending on possession type, if it was replayed etc... there were also adhoc rules made up to even the consumption across the group eg. dodgy hair styles, dummy spits etc. Basically, we were just young blokes playing silly buggers. We did it for about 10 years, but stopped doing it some time ago now.

We used to play a drinking game for the GF where you have to draw a number (player) from each team. In the 08 GF I got Dew and a Geelong onballer, can't remember who exactly, and when I saw his stocky frame I thought 'there is a fella who had seconds this morning'... ever since then, me and my mates call him 'two breakfasts'. Gotta love him, and was delighted he got the Suns gig... strikes me as a good leader for these young fellas.

Port are looking ominous, but unfortunately for them they are about to be distrusted by a hub.

I suspect Adelaide are really bad, however in hindsight, Ports game against the Suns now looks impressive. I expect the Eagles to get better with every game they play in Qld. Training in very dry conditions in WA to playing in a heavy dew was always bound to be hard work for the club. Should be primed for the tigers clash and suspect they will, by then, be favourites. Hope the tigers are really challenged in all games they play. History would suggest it’s the best preparation for finals footy. GWS v Collingwood should be a ripper. Just love having the footy back.

ha ha fair enough, nothing wrong with a bit of unreserved irrational hate, cant say i have too much love for the weagles, but i’ll admit some of thats jealousy due to their success, not like the tiges have done much other than the last few years though, so is it just the tiges or all other clubs generally ? u do seem to bang on about us a bit, is that just due to our recent success ?

The Eagles & Dockers didn’t want a derby game in Perth. They requested that the derby be kept until later in the year so it would increase the chances of a string of home games in Perth later in the year. So no conspiracy theories here.

Still they should allow a game in Perth against any team. Even if it was not a Derby.

dont think its the afl that decides whether there are crowds at the games, pretty sure its the relevant state government

It was just very lazy Football by the Eagles. A great win by the Gold Coast Suns. I just hoped the AFl. The State Government and the Eagles worked together on this and allowed this game to be played in Perth like the Showdown in Adelaide. But they had their own agenda . But as they say WA means Wait Awhile. it is Embarrassing. Once Again well down to the Gold Coast Suns. .

Gerard, Port Adelaide and Adelaide are going to the Gold Coast for the next 3 weeks to play matches there, the WA government's decisions impacted the possibility of West Coast and Fremantle playing in Perth.

I have to admit it was a very poor effort by the Eagles. A great win by the Gold Coast. Thank you to Gaffy as usually He just keeps going. I can not say much for the rest of the Eagles Team.

Don't worry Klompy, restrictions will be lifted before any Vic team has the benefits of a hub. Just a conspiracy theory now and later it will be whinging. I switched over to Baywatch at about qtr time, will be watching that kid all year.
