Yet to record a home-win this season, the Sydney Swans look to defend the SCG against the Essendon Bombers this Friday night in a game that may define the rest of the visitor’s season. Join The Roar for all the action, with live scores and a blog of the match starting at 7:50pm AEST.
While Essendon hopes to go back-to-back against the Swans, their record against them has been poor in recent years. The Bombers have not won a game at the SCG since Round 15, 2009, and have recorded just a single win against the Swans in their last 10 meetings.
If the Western Bulldogs’ win over Richmond, or West Coasts’ Grand Final repeat over Collingwood are anything to go on, history has a lot of sway over current form and this game could easily be an upset.
The Bombers may have showed huge improvement after their three consecutive wins since Round 3, but since facing losses from premiership favourites in Collingwood and Geelong, there are circling worries of a 2018 repeat.
Though after two consecutive weeks of late exclusion, Orazio Fantasia looks free from his illness and clear to line-up for the club this week.
Andrew McGrath and Tom Bellchambers have also been cleared and won’t miss, while Zac Clarke has overcome his calf injury and will be available for selection.
Essendon have decided to rest spearhead, Joe Daniher. With Mitch Brown (wrist) and Shaun McKernan (hamstring) still out, they may look to cycle their rucks through the forward line or play predominantly small.
The Swans have recorded only one win this season, adding their fourth consecutive loss following a 22-point defeat to Brisbane on Saturday evening.
They looked composed in the second term, kicking six goals to bring the margin to two points at the main break. Though come three-quarter-time Sydney had conceded 11 scoring shots to three.
This collapse at half-time has happened against Adelaide, Melbourne and GWS this year, losing in games they seemed a chance in.
Lance Franklin may also be the second big forward out, still not being a certainty to play due to lingering hamstring issues.
However, Tom Papley appears to have pulled up well from his marking collision last week and looks right to play.
It was also during Round 8 last year when Essendon lost to 18th on the ladder in a game that potentially defined their season. If Essendon want to convince the league they’ve grown, they cannot suffer the same result.
Prediction
While no side wants to record consecutive losses, it is important to note Essendon copped these from first and second on the ladder. While not there yet, they now recognise the standard and have something to build towards.
The Swans have slipped into a slump, having recorded their only win against Carlton who now sit one place above them. Though with nothing to lose and Essendon’s confidence fractured, the game could get close.
Bombers to bounce back.
Essendon by 27 points.

That’s rather convenient now isn’t it?… because it looked like you tipped Brisbane and Port from your comments yesterday. I tried to help you out with those I’d!ot!t tips. Seriously though, have you tipped any correct this round?

Luckily I changed my Lions tip. 2/2 so far today. Really Essendon should have won after the siren but the umpire stuffed up.

That should read: it was the right tip but you got the

The right tip was Essendon. You might have got the right answer but you came about it using flawed logic.

Fair call James.

I know it doesn't , more just to highlight how soft the threshold can be sometimes for game altering free kick decisions. And after looking it up last night, a defender deliberately shaking a goal post results in a free kick from the top of the square.

Bombers perhaps not as good this year as I’d thought.

Yes. You’re not allowed to shake the goal post.

I understand how someone like me would irritate you by picking up on your copious amounts of poor tips. Just a suggestion though: perhaps take shots at me when you don’t tip the same team wrong, champ. Unless, of course, you’re going to tell us all you actually tipped the Swans, despite saying they have lost their last nine out of ten home games and you won’t be watching them because they are awful. If yes, that’s not tipping, it’s hedging and you’re hating the fact I’m pulling you up every week for it.

Is climbing the post outside the rules? Genuine question. I don’t know the answer. Funny anyway. In any case, the unrelated smith second 50 doesn’t have any bearing on the above.
James Robinson

What the hell was Rampe doing climbing the goal post on the Myers kick? Surely if Smith is getting pinged 50m that climbing a goal post has a similar penalty? Having said that, even as a Bombers fan i wouldnt want to win like that.

What did we think? Interesting to think how history looked to dictate this one. Essendon haven't won at the SCG since 2009 and have lost nine of the last 10 against the Swans. Plus, they lost to 18th last year when their side's season was in jeopardy. Recent form said this would go differently. Another tip wrong, I suppose.

Glad you liked it! It’s my first time, but I’m definitely hoping to do this more.

FULLTIME The Swans have ended their drought with a big win over the Bombers at the SCG. Both teams fought hard to the end, but at the final siren the Swans were the better side. Despite Essendon taking the lead early, the Swans never looked out of it. While their goal-kicking looked below par in the first, their work around the stoppages and attack on the ball-carrier were elite. With a huge momentum swing in the final minutes, the Swans stole the first and entered the second with intensity. The Swans hit-out early, but it wasn't enough to compete with Orazio Fantasia (4) in front of the sticks as Essendon hit back hard. The Dons took back the lead before half-time, despite it switching a few times before the break. In the third, the Swans earned some much needed separation from the away side. Their polish and pressure in defence often appeared too much for Essendon; Rampe proving important late with elite composure and careful use. While Blakey had a breakout performance, gathering a lot of the pill, hitting the goals and winning his contests. Essendon had repeat entries in the final quarter and brought the game back within a goal. Shiel lifted late, Heppell took himself to another level and Merrett continued to be important. They hit back late but struggled to penetrate Sydney's defence when it mattered - bombing long and losing the advantage. Myers got his chance at a kick after the siren but his shot fell short. Sydney continue their superb record at home against Essendon and earn their second win for the season. This marks the Bomber's third consecutive loss, raising doubts about the rest of their season. Swans 11.11 (77) Bombers 10.12 (72)

Yeah, it reminded me of Issac Smith kicking after the siren a few years back.

Oh Essendon, You make me so very sad sometimes. I don't think I can even defend that performance to be honest. However, I stuck with them through 2016, so I guess I might as well stick with them now hey? Well done Swans though; clearly wanted it more. Cheers for the call Brandon!

I don't understand how the umpire can say Saad ducked then. He slipped and got taken high. Regulation free kick.
