A curious game is to unfold at the SCG, as the struggling Sydney Swans host the Gold Coast Suns. Join The Roar for live scores from 4:35pm (AEST).
It’s been a long time since the Gold Coast Suns were favourites against the Swans but in true 2020 fashion, they are today. The Suns are coming off a fortnight of losses – at the hands of Geelong and Melbourne – but are having the best start to a season in their tenure. The Suns’ youth has also been well publicised, with youngster Izak Rankine debuting last week and looking a genuine talent.
If last Sunday’s turgid loss to Richmond wasn’t bad enough for the club, the Swans were also badly afflicted by injury woes. Midfielder Isaac Heeney is done for the year, while Josh Kennedy is unavailable for least two months. The Swans have not won a game since June 20, and only twice this season, meaning this has become a vital clash for them.
The Suns have only won at the SCG once – 2018’s miraculous upset against their opposition. The Swans are yet to secure a victory at their home ground this season.
Given the Swans’ injury concerns, they have made several forced changes. Heeney and Kennedy are obvious outs, joining omitted pair Sam Gray and Hayden McLean. Aliir Aliir, Callum Sinclair, Tom McCartin and debutant Elijah Taylor come into the squad.
Stuart Dew has made one change to his squad. Brayden Fiorini has been omitted with Wil Powell taking his place.

Just want the Suns needed after a couple of loses. Good hard hit and made to earn it. Swans bit different team with a couple of targets to kick to. Liked the way they took it on tonight.

I can understand how spectators from other sports would be confused when rules come down to interpretation

I have been very harsh on Longmire in the past, his over reliance on contested possessions and lack of flair from the coaches box has held him back. But tonight showed the first signs of a new Sydney swans philosophy. If they can improve their disposal on the 45 degree angle I think they’ll be doing really well. The question I have is can they do it when quarters are lengthened back out to 22 minutes
Charlie Keegan

He has played in the midfield in his junior days.

I don’t actually think this was too bad by Longmire. He moved the magnets around, his boys played far more assertively, and it might not have come off but it bodes well for the future.

Yep but goes to show the umpires need training on how to separate the crowd noise out.

Agreed. Injuries have saved him. But with McCartin and Sinclair back and Aliir playing forward I’d put him on a wing so he can get more involved.

Yup, Swans need to sort of their defence but when they go through the middle they’re good to watch.

Maybe it was the opposition last week.

Actually good game. Enjoyable to watch.

Rankine is a lazy field kick but can forgive it for a fwd pocket who kicks 2goals + so far in their career.

Do they have anyone to replace? In normal circumstances I agree but I don't think swans can afford to

Didn’t drastically change the game though

Blakey needs to be dropped. Has no presence or affect on the game

Rankine reminds me of a young Akermanis.
