A new year has begun and as the Fourth Ashes Test gets underway at the SCG, Sydney, Australia will be hoping to start 2022 in the same style that they wrapped up 2021, while England will be desperately hoping to avoid a series whitewash. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage of the first day’s play from 10:30am (AEDT).
Pat Cummins has confirmed that his side will only see one change to the line up that secured the Ashes at Melbourne just after Christmas. With Travis Head out, Usman Khawaja gets his chance to impress in this series while with both Josh Hazlewood and Jhye Richardson still not 100% fit, MCG hero Scott Boland will be able to see if he can make more Ashes history.
Although the series is over, Australia will not want to take their foot off the throat of the English side. They would love nothing better than to send their rivals on the long journey home having suffered a complete whitewash and there is a feeling that another loss like the one in the third Test could truly break this England side into little pieces.
England have made just the one change to their line up which is surprising considering the terrible performances of their batsmen at the MCG. With Ollie Robinson suffering from a shoulder injury, Assistant coach Graham Thorpe has confirmed that Stuart Broad will return to the side. It’s been a frustrating tour for the experienced seam bowler who commented after the series was lost at Melbourne that he was disappointed to have missed out on opportunities to play in the Tests that best suited his skills.
“I would argue that I won’t get a better chance to take wickets than at Brisbane and Melbourne,” explained Broad in his column in The Mail.
The Urn might be out of reach for this England side but they will be highly motivated to avoid a 5-0 loss and many will know that the two Tests left could be crucial for their careers. It’s quite simple really for England – they just need to bat, bowl and field better. They have to start winning sessions and putting the Australian side and especially Pat Cummins under some genuine pressure.

That’s because you’ve got nothing. I’m impressed you are comparing Harris with them. Don’t forget Bradman and Chappell.

It's too small. It's not even big enough for T20's although they have been played there

Don, I’m not gonna be that cruel to comment on your assertions about Boycott, Harris and Vodges.

SCG is smaller enough stadium to build a roof if we have a bloody umbrella the game will be unhinged :silly:

You really don't have a comeback when your silliness is exposed, do you.

Boycott finished playing decades ago and was one of the greats. Harris is also behind Bradman, Chappell, Voges... You make no point but continue trying. Pay attention to me and learn.

Unlikely! The New Years Test in Sydney is just as coveted as the Boxing Day Test, so neither Sydney or Melbourne would budge!

Interestingly Sydney and Adelaide should swap their Royal Shows as well. Both hold em in some of their wetter months. If they swapped they'd be in dry months. But then both wouldn't be able to claim, "It always rains at Show time"

His last ton was in Sydney one year ago.

Have to agree to disagree I think, his hands were well out in front. It was a good ball for Harris because it was enough to get him interested, Anderson had done his homework on this fellow.

Thanks Oliver for an excellent coverage. :cricket: Greatly appreciated.

Yeah, it was for the news. The alternates' didn't have it either. I appreciate that not much play continued because of the weather. I hope the Fifth Day doesn't get extended for 30 minutes with a result likely.

Long time lurked, first time this. Please be gentle. Speaking as someone at the ground, I hope(&assume) that's stumps. Smith and Khawaja crushing pulled boundaries. Blind fans smoking outside, please don't make me have to go through security again. Peace out

Why not swap Sydney for Adelaide for the new years Test as a D/N fixture. Play Sydney early/mid December.

If they go ahead with putting a roof over the Olympic stadium, there'll be calls from some to move it there. Of course they won't, but it might finally inspire them to move the test order as an alternative...

Was it for news? There’s an alternative Ch 7 isn’t there? Hasn’t cost you in the end, as play was abandoned for the day 5-10 minutes ago.
