The third Test between Australia and New Zealand resumes today in Sydney with the match nicely poised after the opening two days. Join The Roar for live scores from 10:30am (AEDT).
Australia was eventually bowled out for 454 on day two after a superb innings of 215 from Marnus Labuschagne who has now scored four centuries and seven fifties in just his 14th Test.
Considering Labuschagne’s mammoth innings the Black Cap bowlers did extremely well to keep Australia under 500.
Neil Wagner was again one of the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 66. He was supported by Colin de Grandhomme (3 for 78) with spinner Todd Astle picking up two wickets including Labuschagne from a caught and bowled.
New Zealand will be quietly optimistic about reducing the deficit today after openers Tom Latham and Tom Blundell safely made it to stumps without losing a wicket with the score on 63.
Stand in captain Latham has a chance to do something special and he’ll be buoyed by the fact he and Blundell denied Australia for 29 overs to finish day two.
Still, there is a long way to go and the spin of Nathan Lyon could be the contributing factor on day three with Lyon proving difficult to score from with three maidens so far in his eight overs.
Australia will be confident that one wicket is likely to bring two or three with struggling batsman Jeet Raval listed to come in at first drop and the absence of New Zealand’s best batsman and usual captain Kane Williamson.
As always the first hour will be crucial in determining if New Zealand has a shot of making a game of this. With the ball already 29 overs old, the Black Caps have a big chance to build a decent innings and salvage more than just pride from the series.
Join The Roar to see which way it pans out, with live scores of the day’s play from 10:30am (AEDT).

Starc has been great on a wicket that gives him less assistance , as has pattinson to (a unlucky) . the starting xv is under no threat, it never was in my mind. Its all about getting this kid some experience on aus wickets which are really assisting the spinners nowadays. I understand many will be happy keeping the same side but 11 months is a long time theres no winter tour really so we all know the starting side for brisbane in november if all are fit (only hazel v patto is the question there and a tough one it is as both have good credentials at brisbane ) . Watching it now id agree with you better to omit a batsman. To be fair with five out nz were always up against it and have thrown away alot of wickets slogging shots , its like they just want out of here

Fair points pierro. You'd be in agreement with warnie. I would argue head or wade could have been left out for him. Starc has been good this test so I'm glad he wasn't omitted On the other hand Aus would be happy to be so successful with an unchanged team

to put in perspective lyons av is 46 at scg , hes nailed 7 wickets , its a big turner for sure. There was no risk playing swepson in a match that will end a day early. opp missed to give him some invaluable experience as no way youd start him in first three tests against india in 11 months on those bouncy wickets . Shame as we should be eying up the away series wins for me on subcontinent in future with less test cricket scheduled and these spinners need experience and a dead rubber with spinning wicket was ideal . Great effort from all bowlers but this kiwi lot are pretty ordinary with five out. and the pitch is def a turner . Long time off now 11 months unless it doesn’t rain off in bangledesh

400 odd was the magic number - good call. 4.5 sessions to win it

Yeah I'm not sure Swepson would have been so successful Lyon has really had to work for it in the first dig. Lets see how he goes in the second

"Swepson could have got a five for here for sure" That's a big call for a guy who has only take a single fiver-for in 65 first class innings.

just wade/had out or if a pacemen probably starc pre match (on his scg record) . granted he’s bowled well and taken a few and actually this pitch isn’t giving him or pattinson as much at all. cummins is just so relentless accurate. I think theyve all bowled well . Swepson could have got 5 here too though I think it was ripping lets not forget this kiwi side has 4 to 5 subs in and is really weak this test. I think williamson may have got a bit more out of this pitch , its the spin thats lethal

labs has hardly been bowled jeff. actually the trick was to include both lyon and stepson, its a turning wicket so lyon should be getting plenty here if not more . theres no doubt it leans heavily to spinning this wicket. Of course you and I can’t see the pitch pre match and more recently it hasn’t turned this much so that bits trickier unless we could see it a day out and before match. Cummins is just simply brilliant as always . Ive no doubt swepson could have got a bag on this wicket and the result would have been even quicker with both and he could have got experience. Lets not forget kiwis weak batting , 5 out, and played some really poor shots against lyon , a few donations. Swepson could have got a five for here for sure.

We’ve played really well. That’s a problem?

Too true. Actually had that thought during the Melbourne test.

Best that Lyon wasn't rotated out of the team in favour of Swepson? GOAT seems to have done enough for the slow bowlers department (with Labu as back up), enabling Australia to retain it's pace attack who themselves have contributed well. Attack seems well balanced for this Test based on match results so far.

Paine got it behind the stumps. It’s a stumping.

Maybe now you know what it’s like for Wallaby fans...

We should have an Australia vs Australia A pink ball unofficial Test next time we have two minnow sides touring. Maybe even make it a 4 day match with a green pitch. It’s like this summer never happened.

Yes correct, although the law is a bit ambiguous. 39.1.2 states "the striker is out stumped if all the conditions of 39.1.1 are satisfied, even though a decision of run out would be justified."

Of course, they catch it most of the time. But it has zero chance of making an infield catch more likely, the only effect it can have is negative, making people tense up, snatch at the ball, lose concentration. And I’m sure I’ve seen it quite a few times. Completely unprofessional.

Probably right. Maybe even later. Rain may impact -hopefully so for the rest of the state

Congratulations to the Aussies, the Black Caps totally outclassed yet again in this test. A frustrating, one-sided day at the SCG for this kiwi fan.
