The second Test continues today with Australia taking on Pakistan for Day 4 at the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 10am (AEDT).
After two of the more evenly contested Test days in recent Australian summers, this match remains on a knife’s edge as we move into Day 4.
Australia took regular wickets on the third morning and closed the Pakistan innings, but not until their first-innings lead was reduced to 54.
What then followed was a wonderful period of seam and swing bowling from Pakistan, leaving Australia in disarray at 4/16. Mitchell Marsh and Steve Smith started to grind away; however, Marsh should have been taken when the Australian total was 46 after presenting a simple catch to Abdullah Shafique at slip.
The regulation catch was dropped, and Marsh made Pakistan pay. His 96 changed the momentum of the game and swung it back in Australia’s favour.
When Smith was out on the last ball of the day for 50, Australia’s lead had grown to 241 runs with four wickets still remaining, but they still won’t feel totally comfortable with this lead, and will be looking for Alex Carey and the bowlers to increase it to around 300.
Pakistan’s bowlers were impressive all day and further good bowling today could yield early wickets. If they can, this Test could go down to the wire.

I love the way Pakistan play. They are full of optimism. If they hold their catches and babar gets a few runs , they beat us in Sydney. And that will be good for test cricket.

He was getting tremendous turn and bounce in the first innings and it died out as the match wore on. Pakistan seemed unwilling to go to their spinner and it's unusual to see a Pakistan team without a real frontline spinner

As it turned out there was very little spin for Lyon as the match wore on which was a bit surprising - but something for the quicks for all 4 days.
Sgt Pepperoni
Roar Rookie
Yep. Just not the catching and they lacked a spinner (or declined to use their spinner)

Very hard to dislike this Pakistan team. They play the game positively and in great spirit.

Best umpiring performance I can recall for a very long time. Can't remember one decision which was a howler. But thank God for DRS. Watched so many Tests back in the 70s, 80s and 90s when we had to put up with some shocking umpiring performances.

Pakistan are 6 out then all out. Their tail batting and catching was the difference

Very classy words by Pakistan's captain at the end of the game. Well-spoken and you can see why their team never dropped their bundle. He even took the time to thank the groundsmen and congratulate Pat on his performance.

Great test, catching was the difference. Shout out to the umps as well, said it a few times but it was a tough gig out there and they did a fantastic job in my opinion.

Their batting was pretty decent as well - Masood. Babar, Rizwan, Salman ... Great effort by Pakistan. Always looking to win the game.
