I don’t get the persistence with Luai. Qld have had his measure for sometime. Burton would have been a different proposition for Billy to have responded to.

NSW Origin II team: Maguire wields axe to shake up Blues squad with five changes

He works the journos so well. He is excellent at deflecting possible scenarios. For example journo-“How do you think Latrell Mitchell will have an impact?” Billy. “We know whatever side NSW puts out will be quality”. He makes me laugh at just how he toys with them and how good at it he is.

It was always a possibility and therefore that option was removed

If he plays centre his job is to help nullify Mitchell and get the ball to the Hammer asap. Leave the running to the Hammer and Walsh cutting through

By not having Cobbo it takes away a “ sustained bomb” barrage strategy against Cobbo, which would have been inevitable. A lot of players are needled before games. I just think it was more than that.

Capewell whenever he has pulled on the Maroon jumper has performed. He gives it his all. I’m confident he’ll do it again.

Cobbo is out because he was poor under the high ball from Mitchell against South’s. It was clear that NSW would have targetted him and Billy has taken that option away.

Inspirational captaincy in Origin. One cannot underestimate it. “The Manly No.7 was at his clinical best. Cherry-Evans reinforced his reputation as 2024’s most valuable halfback….”. -Taylor. This quality, with Cherry Evan’s at the moment is at an all time high. In the end this may be the difference to the outcome of Origin 2024.

Maguire’s team overhaul strengthens Blues but their lack of cohesion is a major concern

The KEY:-“QLD will need to put huge pressure on Luai to limit the quality and amount of ball Mitchell gets at centre.”. The thing is Qld have had Luai’s measure in the past through “ umbrella defending “ him and turning him back inside and therefore in Mitchell’s case depriving him of the ball. Qld will need to be quick off the line and if they can repeat this strategy, that will go a long way to winning SO2.

It might take a while for this team to ‘sync’ , but will be the basis for potentially successful campaigns with Cleary returning in 2025-6.

He is still doubtful, but anyway Cleary has been ordinary at the Cauldron ( think kick resulting in Ben Hunt runaway try) in the past. He would be still the best option in terms of linking with combinations .

Ricky Stuart has said that the successful outcome of an Origin is essentially the responsibility of the halfback. In this case it rests on the shoulders of the performance of Mitchell Moses. Moses you parted the Red Sea can you carve up the MCG?

The Qld centres will have difficulty defending against Mitchell. I expect a desperate NSW will win. Assuming this happens, you will have a few “ cauldron debutants” and traditional strugglers like Luai in a Langpark showdown for SOO3. A massive ask and task. A bridge too far.

Only once have NSW come back from losing in Sydney, then winning in both Melbourne and Brisbane. 1994. It won’t happen again, even with the “ Trell factor”.

Lost a metre of pace as well .

The hammers’s brilliant changes of pace would be interesting to see in the 400m, where tactics and adjusting speeds is more prominent. His last 100metres could be sensational. Interesting to see what his 100m time is?

The footage of Gasnier also showed incredible speed, poise and balance. I guess that is why he was named an Immortal with all his achievements.

I knew I’d miss a few.

AL it was a shocker. It just didn’t miss , but missed by a country mile. Think kickers with the game on the line , JT in origin, Johns at every level, they deliver. You need to nail those difficult ones when the pressure is on.

Hynes' Origin hopes cop a hit as Dolphins upset Sharks on the back of Hammer's try of the year contender

The Hammer is clearly the best player in the world at the moment. He is a marvellous player, with incredible skill and changes of pace. A match winner.

Two games in Saigon in 1970. Saigon was a democratic government at the time. Saigon didn’t fall to the communists until 1975 and much of the fighting was in what was north Vietnam, when the games were played. That was the political context and that is why they played.

Very good question. The allies argument apparently. Also the theory at the time was called “ the dominoe theory”, that is the spread of communism would cause Asian nations to fall like dominoes and therefore threaten Australia. Proved to be false of course.

Australia should never have been playing Palestine after the disgraceful events of Hamas on Oct7th. Politics and Sport are inextricably linked. It’s why we never played South Africa in cricket in the 1970s because of apartheid. Would we have been playing Vietnam in the early 1970s during the Vietnam War? No. We just have a federal government lacking in courage and conviction.

In the event that Luai plays instead of Hynes and NSW win, Luai is set for a Langpark showdown, where he struggles and could potentially implode. I would go with Hynes at this stage. It’s a must win for NSW and Hynes should be given another chance.
