The final day of the 2023 Ashes series dawns with Australia still well and truly in the hunt for a remarkable comeback win over England to claim the series. Join The Roar for live scores from 8pm (AEST).
Just 40 overs were possible on Day 4 as rain descended on The Oval, but things could hardly have gone better for Australia.
After wrapping up England’s innings for 395 in just 11 balls to set up a run chase of 384, Usman Khawaja and David Warner batted superbly in an unbroken 135-run stand that has shaved the required runs down to just 249.
With conditions expected to be better for Day 5, the Aussies are now almost an even-money chance of securing a coveted series win over England in England for the first time since 2001; but will the retiring Stuart Broad have one final say to swing the match the hosts’ way?

judging by two completely incorrect assessments by you in two tests where you couldn't be more wrong your knowledge of english conditions and pitches is severely wanting and insufficient to gauge correct opinions or assessments . maybe too focused on wa to see outside the place . suggest you go to next ashes in uk and you'll understand more

I know you were. I’m not. I’m talking about cricket from a knowledge base. If you didn’t want him in the squad, it means you didn’t know about his recent 5 for and his century in India.

No need for that. I was making a judgement on his performance this series. I didn't want him in the squad! Anyway, been an odd month. Definition of emotional roller-coaster.
Don Freo

We all know that. That's the point.

His ability. Have you not watched his career? Pointless being on a cricket discussion site if you haven't.

I know, right? Its unacceptable and I dont think we should rule out corporal punishment or deportation to the NSW cartel. I mean, just look how their world bowling rankings plummet. Cummins 3, Hazlewood 15 and the guy who contributed the least, Starc is a lousy 14th. I must say it does seem fair that James Anderson is 4th, Broad 8th, Ollie Robinson is 9th, Chris Woakes is 31st, Joe Root is 67th just ahead of null and Cam Green at 69th. Keep a close eye on null. He is a bit of a mystery but on his day is as good as anyone.

Cam Green didn't play the last test

Don, what stats are you basing that assumption on? His SR vs the slog was: First test 2nd innings SR of 25. 4th test ugly, but in line with Cummins and unlike Hazelwood didn't get a chance to wipe out the tail. When Stokes hit 155 Starc's SR was a paltry 26.
Don Freo
Roar Rookie
Cam Green did in the last test.

When England put their foot down, there weren’t any that stopped them, except perhaps the spinners.

I have no such need.

Neser? Green had to play. Two innings (first and 2nd) just batting to his current average and we win. Add his bowling and it's a runaway.
Don Freo

Lost in India, stuffed it up here. The strike rate is poor.
Don Freo

He was MIA every time the slog was on.
Don Freo

It was a really poor strike rate.

don you are the true contrarian indicator . your ability to moz a match with complete error now supercedes yourself . still I agree the weather did save england yesterday and I was right that it would get very tight today . spot on here and manchester don . you need to listen more to English condition expertise that's what happens when your continually thinking wa is it's own country and you can't see past it
Pierro

I'd say weather saved england yesterday given 49 runs in it very lucky and the ball change was a joke changed match should be an investigation that said the correct result was probably 2 2 . Australia had chance to win it early at headingly but squandered it there . given england won 4 tosses and weather yesterday saving them they certainly have had run of the green by some distance so am glad Australia retains . ten long years with the urn now .

Yes, they feared him when he bowled straight with line and length and made the English play. Sadly that didn't happen very often. When Johnson stopped bowling rubbish in 2013 he turned the series very early on. Day 2 of 1st test when he took 7 wickets.

So Cummins is proud to retain, eh? What else? Having the same no-plan game plan for three tests straight? Boundary runners instead of men in catching positions? Bouncer war instead of line and length? The middle order collapses prevalent in every test? Losing 4/11 in the top and middle order in just 4 overs or losing 7/70 to surrender the test? Perhaps losing all ten wickets in less than a day, affected by 3 hours of rain, for a piddly 199 runs? Even ranking against 2013 and 2015, I still think this is the worst team to tour England. Certainly the worst team to retain the Ashes. One score above 400 in ten innings. Bazball wasn't our undoing--it saved us!

Amazing how a completely incompetent umpire's decision to select a new hard, shiny ball with nothing comparable to the old ball can change the result of a game. Three batsmen dismissed in quick time thereafter who were well and truly in tells everything you need to know.
