India and Australia do battle in the first of three one-day internationals. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:00pm (AEDT).

After a rampaging summer when Test match victories came in abundance, the Australian cricket team head to the subcontinent for three matches against arguably the best cricket team in the world.

The series will set things up nicely for the Test matches that will follow during the next Australian summer and passions will be on display when two old foes go head to head.

Both teams look strong on paper, with many of the Australians coming straight out of T20 Big Bash in fine form.

As usual, the Indian conditions will play a key role in the series. The lower and slower bounce will test the patience of the Australian batting line-up and the Indian spinners will look to dominate through the middle overs.

The result of the toss could be an important factor in the series, with both sides well rounded in terms of batting and bowling. Runs on the board are likely to provide a useful advantage when the matches tighten up under lights and the pitches become slower and sticky.

Prediction
With the Australians fresh off the plane and the Indians in their own conditions, logic suggests India may well have the firepower to win the opening encounter off the the back of the home support.

Expect the Australians to fight back later in the series, but this first match looks a likely Indian win to me.

Well, if you are referring to Hazelwood, he is on the tour. So clearly he is there to play if the selector think they can fit him in. Whilst you may not agree, It is the selectors view that Kane Richardson fills a particular role in balancing the side better than playing all three of Starc, Cummins and Hazelwood. As a side issue, but not the most important, Hazelwood is also hopeless with the bat. Again, Australia likes to rotate their bowlers, so probably Hazelwood will come in for Starc or Cummings in game 3.

Well I believe you are not going to address the issue I have mentioned. By saying this is not the only series, I meant we played several series after 2015 world cup. 5 one day series if I am not mistaken. I have no issue with Kane Richardson. But I believe plenty of people will disagree with the argument that he is one of first choice bowlers. He was there in world cup squad because Hazlewood and Jhye Richardson was injured. It is weird that you have mentioned my comment without addressing the context. Australia sent a near full strength team, not a full strength team. Mostly because of injury, players are coming back. Fair enough. Then Australia does not select one of their first choice bowlers who is fit and sitting in side bench. That is my issue.

"But this is not the only series we have played recently. Is it sir?" Not sure exactly what you meant, but I assume it relates to how many matches have been recently. If that's the case, then Starc and Cummins have just finished 5 Test matches in 6 weeks and 6 iT20s in 2 weeks before that, which is way more than the workload India's players. "With all due respect, Kane Richardson is not even in 10 top fast bowler in Australia." Actually, Kane Richardson was in the WC squad as one of the five best bowlers in Australia and played in the WC matches. Also, Australia has had a long standing policy of rotating bowlers during series, so I would expect to Hazelwood to be playing this game or next, replacing Cummins or Starc. Australia has depth in its fast bowling ranks and can therefore rotate according to conditions and workload. We have seen likes of Jason Behrendorff, Jhye Richardson, Billy Stanlake, Nathan Coulter-Nile. I know some of them had injuries, but not all of them. Behrendorff, injured. J Richardson, injured and returning through T20. Billy Stanlake has only ever played 7 ODIs and hasn't played for Australia for more than 12 months. Nathan Coulter-Nile isn't even getting selected every game in the BBL; he is a long way off the Australian side at the moment. What's your issue with Kane Richardson? He's one of Australia's top ODI bowlers and as I said, was in the WC squad. "My guess is the only reason Australia bothered to send near full strength team is because next world cup is here." Well, this thread started off by you saying that Australia wasn't taking the series seriously because of the players it selected. But now you are saying it is near full strength?

But this is not the only series we have played recently. Is it sir? My guess is the only reason Australia bothered to send near full strength team is because next world cup is here. I am aware of the fact that Hazlewood was injured during World Cup. I am not blaming Australia for that. But Hazlewood is fit this time and he has been included in touring team. With all due respect, Kane Richardson is not even in 10 top fast bowler in Australia. We have seen likes of Jason Behrendorff, Jhye Richardson, Billy Stanlake, Nathan Coulter-Nile. I know some of them had injuries, but not all of them. To be honest, I do not think even this time around we will see Mitchell Starc-Josh Hazlewood-Pat Cummins bowling together here. Sorry, but you’re wrong for this series. Australia hasn’t rested any players for this tour. Starc played nearly every match in the World Cup. Hazelwood wasn’t in the World Cup squad as he has been recovering from back injury. On the side, why isn’t India taking this series seriously? No Pandya, no Kumar, no Dhoni?

Sir, i think this is first time we have seen starc playing an ODI in india. I do not even remember if Hazlewood has ever played an ODI here who is former number one ODI bowler. How many years it has been since they have started playing? If this is not ignorance i do not know what it is. I am not talking about injuries. No one can do anything about it. But Australia always picks a team for away series after they rest main players. That is my point.

Wow sir, at least spare us the poor MSD fans this time around from being blamed for climate change? Now growth rate is also our fault? Woh to self assumed and and self proclaimed desh bhakton ki department hai na? Amit ji is already saying this is temporary. I am sure our PM and his deputy CM yoyo ji has this figured out already. Never underestimate the power of 4.5% and 3% under Gujju model. They will do just fine without poor MSD fan’s contribution.Sit tight for the near future which will go hero from zero according to them, hopefully.

Jeepers. I didn’t see that coming. Didn’t handle Aust bowlers at all (it wasn’t just the batting lineup that left them with that score), then had nothing against only two of Aust batmen. I’m sure it will be more close games coming up. What has been India’s buildup and player fitness?

I don’t remember seeing a more dominant performance against such a strong Indian side. I’m not sure Agar is the answer there. I’d still like Maxwell coming in at 5.

Thanks for your learned contribution. No doubt with contributors like you, India will stop growing at 4.5%, perhaps reaching 3% in near future.

Extremely disappointed… India is still a top heavy team but hoped atleast the bowlers would come good… Then again, Australia were just the better team today… Congratulations for a well deserved victory and a thumping drubbing wakeup-call.

Australia has put the cleaners through India in the opening match of the three match ODI series at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The home side batted first and despite the innings starting well, a large total slipped beyond their reach as wickets continued to fall through the middle overs. That allowed the Australians to keep a check on the run rate and the fine bowling of Adam Zampa, Ashton Agar and Pat Cummins kept the Indian total under control. Mitchell Starc was on hand to cause all sorts of trouble for the tail and the target of 256 was unlikely to be enough on what appeared a good batting wicket. It did not take too long to see that the total was far from adequate as Aaron Finch and David Warner set about chasing down the runs. They did so without losing a wicket and compiled a record partnership of 258 in the process. It was a comprehensive spanking for the home side and they will surely bounce back in the remaining two matches in the series. However, tonight is Australia’s time to celebrate after a dominant performance that gives the visiting side a 1-0 lead in the three match series. Final Scores Australia………………0 for 258 India …………………….10 for 255
