England’s first innings will resume at 1/23 at Old Trafford on the third day of the fourth Ashes Test match of the 2019 series. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 3, starting from 8pm (AEST).

On Day 2, Australia’s first innings resumed at 3/170, with Steve Smith (60 not out) and Travis Head (18 not out) the two batsmen at the crease.

Smith hit a couple of early boundaries, but Head could not do the same, as he was dismissed for 19. Stuart Broad trapped Head lbw, which brought Matthew Wade to the crease.

Wade did not last long, either, as he was dismissed for 16. Wade looked to go large against Jack Leach, but he skied the ball, and Joe Root took the catch at mid-on.

Tim Paine joined Smith at the crease, and the Australian captain helped Smith get to another Test century just before the lunch break. Australia went into the main break 5/245.

Once play resumed after lunch, England thought they had Smith very early, as Leach found his outside edge, and Ben Stokes took the catch at first slip.

However, Leach overstepped, which meant Smith survived due to the no-ball. That ultimately led to Smith reaching 150.

Paine reached a milestone of his own in the second session, also, as he reached his first half-century of the series. However, he was dropped twice throughout the middle session.

Both Smith and Paine were able to get through till tea, with the score 5/369.

However, straight after the tea break, Paine was dismissed first ball of the session for 58, as Craig Overton found his outside edge, and Jonny Bairstow took the catch.

Pat Cummins came to the crease, but he was dismissed quickly for four, as Leach found the outside edge of his bat, and Stokes took the catch at first slip.

Despite losing a couple of wickets early in the session, it did not stop Smith from getting to his double-century.

Smith was eventually dismissed by Root for 211, as he was caught by Joe Denly going for the reverse sweep.

Mitchell Starc piled on the pain for England, as he compiled an unbeaten 54 runs from 58 deliveries. Nathan Lyon also chipped in with an unbeaten 26. Paine declared with Australia’s first innings total at 8/497.

Rory Burns and Denly were given the task of batting 10 overs before stumps. However, Denly could not survive, as he was dismissed by Cummins for four. The opener was caught at short leg by Wade.

Overton came in as nightwatchman, and he, alongside Burns, survived until the end of the day. England are currently 1/23.

Burns (15 not out) and Overton (three not out) have a huge task on Day 3, as England still trail by 474 runs. Rain will have an impact on the day, according to reports. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 3, starting from 8pm (AEST).

The equation is finish off England in 1 st session. Bat two more sessions. Day 5 bowl England out again.

My money still on a draw, Australia wanted England all out today but by batting on for almost two days meant too much time was taken from the game. We will see.

totally agree I wanted him back for the world cup but the selectors were patient and timed it beautifully on top of getting it right to win the first test when pattinson was ready to go.

Keeping Hazlewood out of the World Cup to ensure 100% fitness has certainly paid of. It’s the best I’ve seen him bowl for a long time

Hopefully Starc can come in and skittle the tail to earn his spot this game. Cummins & Hazlewood are getting a lot of overs covering for him and need to be fit for the last test.

Starc better repay the faith by cleaning up the tail

Yeah, people got really caught up in Starc, absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that. I think many people forgot why he wasn’t in our side. I am ok with Starc, but I al one of those that was never fully sold on the Starc train for test cricket, was always hazey, then Cummins once he came in for me.

Both great together Matt, good foil for each other. Perhaps we missed a beat here without siddle (5 wickets manchester 2013) or pattinson

I love Cummins and he is a star, they have both been excellent, but hazey has pipped him since he has been back this series, so impressive and has never looked better in my opinion, slightly faster but his accuracy seems better than ever.

Hazelwood was number 1 worldwide before his injury a year ago , then cummins world number 1 in last six months, now well I’m not sure. Both brilliant . Was smart to rest him in the world cup . its paying dividends if englands luck with weather and umpiring don’t get in the way.

Stumps! Bad light has ended the day early. Good day of Test cricket. Rory Burns batted very well, as he accumulated 81 runs. Joe Root was solid, as he finished with 71 runs next to his name. Josh Hazlewood was very good. He currently has four wickets next to his name. Pat Cummins was also terrific, and much better than his figures suggest. An interesting day ahead tomorrow. Make sure you join The Roar at 8pm (AEST). England: 5/200 Overs: 74

Despite the excellent partnership between root and burns, that was excellent work by hazey and Cummins, Lyon was not at his best, mainly to burns, but he didn’t go for too many and looked a little better later. Starc was an absolute passenger and looked the least effective bowler from either side. If he doesn’t mop the tail quick tomorrow, he really has done nothing.
