Rain ensured that an English win can all but be ruled out as a possibility but with two days play remaining in the Test, Australia can still dictate terms at Old Trafford in Manchester where the fourth game of the Ashes is being played. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog from 8pm AEST.

After latest edition of Steve Smith’s torment had managed to help Australia piled on nearly 500 batting first, England looked like they had calmed the home team fans’ nerves through Rory Burns and Joe Root.

Burns, who was unbeaten overnight and Root, who walked out to bat at the fall of the night watchman, Craig Overton’s wicket, steadied the ship and held firm for nearly 53 overs.

In doing so they seemed to have taken the hosts towards that first target of safety but Josh Hazlewood’s continuous questions got the better of both of them in successive overs.

First to go was Burns after a well-compiled 81, edging an away-going ball to the slips, but the bigger wicket was that of the captain Root. Now Root’s lack of 100s has been well-chronicled, but the more important aspect of his dismissal was its timing.

With Jason Roy batting at an unfamiliar position of number four – five if you count the night watchman – and struggling at that, and with the new ball not too many overs at that stage, it would have worked greatly in England’s favour if their captain could have pushed on and got that elusive three-figure score.

Instead, he fell in the 67th, and Roy, whose defenses have been tested time and again this series, saw his stump sent packing by Hazlewood after a 33-ball essay at the crease.

What would trouble England even more was that eight balls later, the day was called off, and when they resume on the fourth day, the pair of Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow would have six overs to get their eyes in before they face the second new ball.

Add to that the fact they are still 98 away from the follow-on mark, and they cannot really force a win from here on, Australia would really relish the situation. The big question is if England can bat deep enough to render the final day to that of just academic interest or if there’s something to watch out still.

Be sure to join The Roar for live coverage of this fourth day of the fourth Ashes Test between England and Australia from 8pm AEST and don’t forget to drop a comment in the section below.

Any observations on the non-called overstepping that seemed to be quite an issue on day 4?

This has been a really interesting batting display from Denly so far for me. With all the talk of Australian's playing with "soft" hands in England, Denly seems to be playing with the hardest hands there are. Not throwing the arms at it or going the windmill, but strikes it hard even in defence.

At least half of Broads LBs would have been not out if they had been given not out. He got umpires call 99% of the time. Something needs to change in that rule.

Why is only broad allowed those LBWs when Starks are just as similar but not given.

All batsmen generally fill their boots against weaker sides. It’s why they’re weaker sides. It takes someone pretty rare to flourish against that best bowling attacks in favourable conditions. How quickly we forget the crucial 90 runs he scored at Brum, or his match-saving 40-odd not out at Lord’s. He hasn’t had a great series but he’s still made a couple of important contributions.

Sorry dude, have you ever watched cricket before? You clearly don't know the laws or understand the processes. Underlined by every comment made.

He could prob fix the nexus between renewables and coal, rid politics of Shorten and Dutton and simultaneously coach the Knights and the Crows to a flag. All before tea tomorrow.

Lyons demons are internal. He needs put it 'up n out'. He's allowed the batsmen push him short reducing him to darts.

So has labuschagne in very tricky conditions. If they can win this match and they still have to get 8 wickets they could finally give carey a go and call him in to the squad, can't do any worse and has been brilliant all summer in england .

Last time we were here Smith failed out of London and there was a widely accepted view he couldn’t score when the ball swung or nipped about. So much for that. He’s gone away and looked at how he got out 4 years ago and made some adjustments. Now, on difficult tracks and against a bloody brilliant new ball attack, he’s able to play any innings needed at any time or position required in any match. I’m 60 and saw my first test match live when Snow sconed Jenner at the SCG in 1970 and I’ve never seen a player more in control of his game. Maybe/probably Lara was more talented but there’s no batsman I’ve ever seen I’d choose to send out in a pressure situation and expect to evaluate when he needed to survive and when he needed to accelerate. And was a good enough team man not to consider personal goals when making decisions to shift gears. He’s incredible and we’d already have lost these Ashes had he not been in our side.
