Looking forward to your comments supporting the curators when India get seaming green tops, or hard bouncy decks, at every test next time they tour Australia.

India face pitch doctoring claims over stunning photos of ‘selective’ watering as another Aussie star drops out

Mundane dropping the ball over the line still brings a smile to my face.

Darren Albert’s try for Newcastle in the 97 ARL grand final wasn’t bad either.

Sadly I doubt that any of us a really surprised by these reports. Also sadly, I think most of us would be astonished if it were just Collingwood and Hawthorn.

If true the people involved have no place in the game (or really anywhere in society that gives them some authority over others). I’m going to watch (I suspect with an increasing sense of disgust) as these claims are investigated.

North Melbourne and Brisbane must sack Clarkson and Fagan after Hawthorn racism revelations

Tim, they were given 24 hours to provide comment and advised publication would happen anyway (mentioned on ABC radio this morning). That’s not an opportunity to address the questions, that’s simply journalistic blackmail.

That’s just a comment on your comment, not related in any way to the behaviour at Hawthorn.

If this is correct Clarkson et al have no place in the game.

Pedant alert: Fitroy won their 7th VFL premiership in 1922. The 8th didn’t happen until 1944.

The stage is set for the Brisbane Lions to cause one of the biggest finals upsets in recent memory

I’ve coached under-age football and played a little at over 35’s levels. Loved it when I’m involved.
But, generally I would rather gouge my eyes out than watch football (except at the highest levels).
For me, it’s a sport that I have to be personally involved in to care.

Dear AFL and NRL fans: Will we be seeing you at the A-Leagues this season?

A North Melbourne v Carlton demonstration game in London, 1987 I think. Aiken would have good reason to be resentful about how that played out.

Voss locked in as Carlton coach

I was also at that 1987 preliminary final. Earlier in the year North was looking good, so I bought the finals series package, entry to all 6 finals. Of course that went pear-shaped in week 1 when Melbourne thrashed North in the elimination final (but it was good to see Robbie Flower getting some finals).

In the prelim, Melbourne really should have won, but the universe didn’t want it to happen. A wind change at 3/4 time so that Hawthorn kicked with the breeze for 3 quarters. Melbourne controlling play but not quite putting the score on the board. A Buckenara mark 50 out as the siren goes and up steps Jim Stynes. The way Buckenara was playing he probably would have kicked it anyway, never know now. As a neutral on the day it was a stunning game.

'Twice the ecstasy and twice the heartbreak': Preliminary finals have their own place in history

Two matches on the road, two wins, 6 points +4 goals, have to be happy with that result.
On the pitch, it looked worse than any pitch I ever saw when coaching the local U-10’s. An absolute cow paddock.

Steyn’s bowling was a thing of beauty. An absolute joy to watch.

Dale Steyn was sheer fast-bowling beauty

I remember Steve Holland’s swim. My whole school was crowded into a couple of classrooms to watch the race live. He broke his own world record in that final and still finished 3rd.

Memorable Olympic moments since 1976: Both good and bad

Thank you. Best laugh I’m going to get today.

'Culture of entitled men': How Dragons can make this right

Well, if anyone was asking me, it would be a hard no. The comments above about strength of leadership are spot on. He is blessed with an amazing skill set, but just doesn’t have the people management skills for the role. Best bat in the team, source of wisdom from second slip, but not the captain.

Will Cricket Australia regret their ‘fan consent’ clause on Smith?

Walter Lindrum.

The GOAT of GOATs Part 1: Cameron Smith versus Tom Brady

Appreciate the thought that goes into these sort of schemes. But, and it’s a big but, can anyone realistically point to a year when the best teams didn’t make it to the last couple of weeks in the season because of their draw?

A fair draw is 34 weeks, play every team, home and away. Obviously that’s not going to happen. So a team can get a soft draw at times, but it’s a game played with an oval ball. Random bounces (or draws) are just part of the joy of the game.

What the AFL can learn from American fixturing

I think the bigger issue for Tim Paine is that his keeping is not up to its previous standard.

He takes the catch off Pant in Sydney when Pant was on 3, Australia win in a canter (yes it was on the tougher end if the scale, but one a test quality keeper would expect to take). He takes the stumping opportunity off Pant yesterday, Australia win in a canter. That stumping opportunity was not a hard one. And Lyon the bowler both times, makes a big difference for Lyon as well.

I’m not a Carey fan, knocking the ball around in hit & giggle cricket doesn’t do it for me. But I’m really not across the other options. Is Whiteman performing these days?

It’s time for Paine to move on. It’s not fair, he should have been a 100 test player (but for some numpty at CA insisting he play an exhibition match against a fired-up Dirk Nannes), but it’s time.

Then who to be captain. Man, that’s a tough one. I was never a fan of Smith as captain, and would not be happy seeing him have another go. Cummins can do anything, but do we really want to burden the best bowler on the planet with captaincy? Of the batsmen, only Labuchagne is a guaranteed pick for now, and he doesn’t strike me as a captain either (then again, before he got the job, neither did AB). Perhaps it’s not too late for me to dust off my leggies and put my hand up ????.

Tim Paine's time as captain is done as Australia crumble to humiliation against India

Short answer: no. It’s so open for abuse, as I think we saw in Sydney.

If substitute keepers are allowed, then at least remove the injured keeper from the rest of the match (as is done with a concussion substitute).

I’m not a fan of substitutes at all. It’s a game of 11 v 11, not 11 v an entire squad. It has opened an entire Pandora’s box to introduce substitutes, only a matter of time before teams become adept at gaming the process.

If substitutes have to be used, limit it to concussion issues only, to protect players from themselves.

Should wicket keepers be allowed to be replaced during a game?

Agree with most that the Gabba is the best pitch in the country, at least earlier in the season.

What I miss is the variety of pitches. When the pitches at the 5 major grounds were all distinctively different we had a real test of both teams. The Waca, which was just scary fast and bouncy. The Gabba, which was fast, with swing and seam. Sydney, which turned square on day 5. Melbourne, variable bounce and turn as the game went on. Adelaide, the definition of a road (3 certainties in life: death, taxes and a 100 at the Adelaide Oval).

The drop-ins seem to produce this homogeneous, so-so pitch. Hopefully we can get away from that.

The Adelaide pitch was brilliant yet again. Now the others need to follow suit

Actually, you very quickly learn to avoid telling people what you do. Everyone one wants free advice, usually about something a ‘friend’ has done.

Channel 7 exposed as desperate and naive in cricket’s messy TV stoush

Oh, by the way, I’m a commercial lawyer. I guarantee the contract will have a force majeur clause that may very well deal specifically with a pandemic (I’ve drafted them myself in many contracts). It’s the specific drafting of the clause that would be relevant.

Channel 7 exposed as desperate and naive in cricket’s messy TV stoush

Happy to discuss facts, or indeed throwing up theories on why Channel 7 is acting the way it is. Find it frustrating to see what is essentially pointless guessing about contract details that I’m fairly certain not a single person on this site has access to.

Channel 7 exposed as desperate and naive in cricket’s messy TV stoush

Dexter, speculation without actually seeing the contract is nothing but pointless noise. If making pointless noise floats your boat, enjoy.

Channel 7 exposed as desperate and naive in cricket’s messy TV stoush

Without seeing the contract, any speculation on this is really pointless. And that’s the full contract, not just the bits that get announced in a press release.

‘But as a player who has gone through mental health difficulties in his short career, Cricket Australia’s medical staff and selectors will undoubtedly be weighing up whether it really is the right move in a summer where the mental strain on players could be greater than ever.’

Absolutely disgraceful. I can only assume you have never experienced discriminatory treatment as a result of self-disclosed mental health issues. (Disclosure: I have).

You then endeavour to conflate issues around life in the sporting bubble with Pucovski’s issues. I’m no expert either, but from my personal experience I would actually expect they are very different things.

To me at least, it reads like you have an opinion but are not courageous enough to be open about it.

Entirely possible that I’m incorrect, but in my view it’s a disgraceful approach.

The tough call on Will Pucovski

Actually David, I did. Shameful stuff. Chose to not select someone because of mental health issues, what do you think happens when the next player with mental health issues comes along. Do you think they will be open about when they are having problems. It’s an absolutely disgraceful approach.
