Santner dropped for 21 year old Rachin Ravindra (who is a much better cricketer already). In a couple of years Ravindra will be opening for NZ if he does well with Conway moving to no 4 when Taylor retires.
Unfortunately, despite the absences, India will likely flog them having the three players that matter on these pitches - Ashwin, Jadeja and Axar Patel - while NZ’s spinners are all relative newbies and not very threatening.
In fact, they’re resting Virat Kohli (for the first of two Tests), Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. KL Rahul is injured and they have so much talent to burn they’ve sent Prithvi Shaw to SA to play for India A. Could say they aren’t taking Test cricket too seriously, but they will now doubt flog NZ having the three names that matter on these pitches - Ashwin, Jadeja and Axar Patel. NZ also has an Indian born spinner named Patel, another one of Indian heritage, plus Will Somerville raised in Sydney. Don’t know what happened to Santner.
This is the exact reason that "reviews" should not exist. When did it become the players role to decide whether its out or not. This just shows that the whole review process does not work and it proves beyond doubt that we are still getting shockers being made. How does the Ump give a plumb LBW not out?
Let the Ump say..That was so close Ill review it so we get the right decision.
it doesn't take much these days to get pinged on this forum.
My problem is when some comments get through which are personal attacks (not allowed), but the responses are canned.
was going to do an article on this exact point Jeff.
These same "rested" blokes can all hop on chartered planes to go to the IPL, miss a Test against England, then claim bubble fatigue after getting bundled out of the WC, so they don't have to play a Test series.
Clearly they care little about Test cricket and everything about fattening their bank accounts.
And if they're fatigued, what about the Black Caps and the other Indian players? They're not fatigued?
Playing the WTC champions in a rematch of the Final and Virat - and others - are rested.
A disappointing message about the status being place on Test cricket.
Perhaps they were worried they’d lose anyway and by having players out, could excuse it away.

Ravindra is a quality young batsman and an improving spinner.

Santner unavailable, or dropped? Conway will be missed.

Meanwhile Boult and De Grandhomme opted out of the tour (neither would've been picked in XI probably) and Conway is still injured.

Argument to be made, he's the best bowler in Test Cricket at the moment

Might not want to come back the way his nemesis Jamieson was bowling yesterday. Going to be the best bowler since Steyn.

(sigh) I tried to respond Paul but the comment has been sent off to the naughty corner.

Yeah. Smells a bit off. And why not go all out to win the First Test of the series, then rest for the second?

who ever wrote the headline is another expert in hindsight. I'll bet f he had to make that call live, he wouldn't have reviewed either.

A bit harsh. When they're so far down the pitch it's always tricky.
