'It's not my call': Pat Cummins peppered with questions about Justin Langer

By The Roar / Editor

A decision could be made as soon as Friday on the future of Australian coach Justin Langer. Despite winning a T20 World Cup and Ashes series within months there is speculation about whether he will be replaced after four years. Pat Cummins refused to be drawn into his opinion of whether Langer should be coach other than to say he’s enjoyed working with him.

Exactly right. Also, if he says there are other better options, he is immediately in conflict with the current coach and makes that situation untenable for the upcoming tours. The only line Pat Cummins can use is that "it is a decision for CA - not my call". Just these petty journos that try and stir trouble for the sake of a story.

I real shame they didn't look at the Victorian bowlers in that Indian series. Boland for one of the dud NSW 3 and we would of won.

Not to sure about this drama about JL but at least got some "rowdyism" for some perspective. Hope you got home catheter free mate. Cheers Lukestar.

He did - he's much more patient than I. Not sure JL's actually done anything wrong (recently, at least). Not sure what CAs doing - there seems to be some suggestion they want to advertise the position, which would be a bit awkward given Langer's due to travel with the team pretty soon. Whatever, the spin isn't helping anybody.

I thought he handled it well. JL and CA, not so much.

If Cummins states publicly that he thinks Langer’s contract should be renewed, it means that CA have to renew it. If they don’t, they have to deal with stories that: 1. CA are in conflict with the Australian Captain; and 2. The Captain of the team didn’t want them to hire the coach they did hire. That’s clearly an unacceptable situation, so it’s a good thing that Cummins is intelligent enough to not allow it to happen.

Yes, I saw your alternatives and they would be impossible for him or anyone else to say. His own position should be in question if he buys into it publicly. No way he should state an opinion on renewal. He’s gone as far as he can.

So, media reporters ask Cummins questions he's been asked many times before. The reporters know Cummins won't get into specifics because it's not his decision and he doesn't want to be seen to be trying to influence the board - and rightly so. When he gives them the answers the reporters knew they were going to get, it's presented as news. I can't imagine how, if I was in Cummins' position, I would resist the urge to throttle the lot of them. The worst thing is, many of these reporters think they're providing a public service.

Do grow up, read what I have in fact presented and comment on that, rather than on what you say I seem to have ... . As to "results" - the original piece was not about results and the responses here bear that out. Search around elsewhere for threads on results is my suggestion, and also a visit to SpecSavers.

I had already answered that for you up the page, two alternatives: "He is in his late 20s, went to school ‘n all, yet he is incapable of saying Justin Langer is a fine coach “and I would like to see him stay on” or “however the time has come for change”, adding “He and I talked about this just last week”." Further, they all want to play grown up games behind closed doors, choosing their faves and hating horrid people who boss them around, then leaking bits to the media, forming gangs and such. Billy the blue fella could tell you they will be found out later, when they start dobbing on each other. They, however, do not have the ticker to speak confidently in public about things of public interest in which they are convinced they are expert. This is fair dinkum like a live-to-air lesson in how to perfect and publicise a reputation as dead set snakes. They do not deserve Justin Langer, he is familiar with more worthy company. Finally, about "Same in any organisation ..." - the Australian cricket team is not "any organisation", it belongs to the ordinary people for a start. Executive appointments at Macquarie Bank and Harvey Norman are not played out in the media, with shop attendants and computer technicians making clear who they prefer, in the Daily Mirror and on podcasts (I still don't know what they are :stoked: ). You will have heard the mantra for those who have the good fortune of selection for higher honours, about "protecting and leaving the game in a better state than when you arrived". These blokes are ignorant of it, clearly.

No, right on the mark. As captain, I assumed he would be bright enough to have chased down Wayne Bennett's number to ask his advice on how to manage the media. He's been in the job for 10 weeks and sitting on his clacker for a month, that's time enough to take the job seriously by finding out what to do. Each year we used have an ABC current affairs bloke in (from TDT, Paul?) to coach the executive in dealing with the media. (The chairman maintained my busted nose and rough head denoted me as good for radio interviews :silly: ). The many simple rules included "They are not your friend, their question is unimportant. Before you appear think through the two or three points that are important to you and, whatever they ask, ignore it and answer first with "That is an interesting question ... then speak to your own subject, get your message across, with authority. You know it better than they do, after all." That bloke was speaking about a sport he should know backwards, the questions asked were entirely predictable - it was all known territory - but still he repeated the same alphabet soup three times and looked uncertain and evasive as he did it. When he was done I'll warrant his entourage will have grunted "You were fully awesome bro ... bork, bork, bork". John Sattler, from Kurri Kurri, at 25 was an accomplished speaker in public. Scott is the same - although he went one better and became an accomplished public speaker because he put in the effort.

“He’s done a fantastic job…I’ve really enjoyed my time working with JL…”. What more can he say without putting the decision-makers in an impossible position? Same in any organisation or industry about commenting on a reappointment of a CEO or senior manager.
