LISTEN: Whateley, Maxwell, Brayshaw or Gilly: Who had the best call of Starc's iconic first-ball wicket?

By The Roar / Editor

The Aussies got off to the best possible start against England with Starc’s first-ball wicket – just the fourth dismissal in Ashes history to begin a Test match. The left-arm quick ended up with first-innings figures of 2/35 but who called that instantly-iconic moment best?

Nothing like. Just being pedantic and fighting a losing battle on the use of iconic. https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/iconic

Fair enough. I'll concede that could become the case if the Poms have a real stinker.

you could say that Harmison's ball came to be symbolic and representative of the way England fell over in that series.

Iconic doesn't mean just notable, memorable or very good, at least it didn't used to. It means - or meant - an image or individual that is symbolic, representative or worshipped/adored. Maybe Bradman was an icon, or there are iconic photos of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis or Chairman Mao, or so-and-so gets called a fashion icon. Maybe Warne's ball of the century was iconic. But it's true, I am a dinosaur, and nowadays anything that is mildly famous, well-liked or very good gets called iconic, so I am fighting a losing battle.

Nothing Iconic about Brayshaw, Warne or Howard . Throw in Hamish McLachlan. Crickets on and all the pretend commentators come out of the woodwork.

What's the one you're referring to? #1: Ashes 2005? #2: Ashes 2006-2007?

Actually...which one? Harmison has two iconic first balls of a series.

If I hear Brayshaw's voice on any program I instantly change channels or turn it off. He is worse than the combined efforts of all the "footy Shows".

Second time in 140 years that a wicket has fallen on the first ball of an Ashes series. 4th time ever on first ball of an Ashes Test. Pretty comfortable with that description.

1st ball of the series. That makes it pretty iconic. Will be talked about for a long time when Ashes contests are reflected upon. As Harmison's ball is iconic. One just has to say "Harmision's first ball of the series" and most cricket followers recognise what you're talking about.
