Are they playing test cricket right now?

Nah, I wouldn't say fifties are the metric at all. That was Wade I was referring to, and I appreciate your correction re: that 57 he scored in India. I suspect what has also kept selectors cautious about re-calling Wade is whether he will correlate the dominant form to test level, given he is 31, with an average of 28 from 22 tests. I don't particularly agree with it, given we are witnessing the guy in the form of his life, but it might be a reason for their desire to look elsewhere at younger options as pure batsmen.

That he's not in the Aussie team.

I consider Paine lucky that when he was returned to the test team no state keepers were putting forward a compelling case to pick them. IIRC a year previous it might well have been Whiteman getting the job, he'd had a very good debut year. Paine then was given the captaincy when captain and vice captain ruled themselves out with only Khawaja as the only alternative seeing as we never give it to a bowler with Lyon by far the most experienced player in the team. As I mentioned previously Carey has a chance to nail the job down and I'd like to see a young player come in and have a long career in both test and ODI, we'll see what happens.

Ryan H I'm not sure if your referring to Nevill or Wade re the "passing 50 in his last 17? test innings" but I can tell you that Nevill scored 60no (second highest score in that innings) against Sth Africa in Perth and then played only 1 more test before being dropped, Wade scored 57 and 25no against India in India with only 3 completed test innings after that before getting dropped. If 50 is the metric then it is 12 innings since our captain passed 50, but it was the tremendous effort of 61no in Dubai.

Yes. Nevill did little wrong behind the stumps, yet couldn't produce more of the fighting knocks with the bat which he did on occassions. Wade was 100% re-called initially for the 'mongrel' he supposedly brought; perhaps Smith preferred standing beside it as opposed to Nevill. Either way, mongrel they claimed it was, but in reality nothing but boorish behaviour. The fact he didn't pass 50 in his last 17? test innings (off the top of my head) is what hindered his chances most.

They are a recent sample size. He has only recently begun to perform with the bat. I'm happy with Carey. It's a well balanced side right now.

"Handscomb... when he keeps, he never scores a run." Handscomb has made 1,045 runs at 48 in the List A matches where he's played as a keeper. 3 ODIs are a poor sample size.

Handscomb is out of the conversation as a keeper. He is a Wade-like keeper but, when he keeps, he never scores a run. He is not able to do both and has said he doesn’t want to do both. Paine has proven himself. Carey has proven himself. Wade fell way too short. The Wade attack dog, Nevill too quiet stuff is more social media/urban myth. Nevill as NSW skipper was sufficiently strong. It was just selector error. Wade never had runs on the board when he was selected. Paine was never “lucky”. He probably could have been the keeper ahead of Haddin if not for the UNLUCKY breaks on his finger. Why not stay with the successful players?

Your comment re giving up his innings doesn't apply to Paine as well? 2 overs to go? Paine has made every post a winner but would have to be one of the luckiest players I can recall, he certainly did not score runs consistently at first class level in the manner that Wade has before being recalled to the test team. Dropped a not difficult catch first session back too. To me I guess it's often the inconsistencies in selection policy are hard to fathom. Nevill was dropped as runs were the currency, Wade as attack dog with a change of policy and decreasing batting returns was dropped and Paine returned on the back of not much. Then circumstances saw him given the captaincy. If Paine had Wade's current form when returned to the test team then it would have made good sense. I suspect Paine's test batting will go into slow decline to match his sub 30 first class average but will survive as he is captain until Smith resumes as captain. It will be interesting to see which way the selectors go re World Cup keeper. I suspect it will be a big scoring comp and Hanscomb might prove irresistible as gloveman but will it adversely affect his batting? He says himself he doesn't want to be considered for keeping, great form he is in will that rule him out? Carey hasn't presented an irresistible case to continue picking him yet, he may get a good chance against Pakistan to do so or Wade could come into consideration then.

Nah...Wade is well down the pecking order. He is just a strong Shield player in good form. He is certainly not in any better form than Sam Whiteman, Josh Phillippe or Cam Bancroft who are all way better keepers. I hope you are not seriously suggesting that Wade, who failed at Test level, is a better bet than Paine, who has made every post a winner. I wonder why you made that comparison. Carey is certainly under no pressure. A seriously arty keeper with an excellent batting record at ODI level...certainly better than Wade.

And the national captain got out in the second last over of the game handing victory as opposed to an honourable draw to West Aus. Paine 73 runs for the match, Wade 172. Oh yeah, 2 wickets as well. It is harder of course to keep for a match and still score runs consistently. He deserves a run somewhere but just recently everyone's performing well. Maybe Carey's under pressure.

Yep. Get them when we need them. If you start performing when others are as well, why expect they are going to exclude performing others just for you? The more pertinent point is, he gave up his innings just when they needed him to see it home.

He was selected when he wasn’t making runs, and now he’s not being selected while he’s scoring runs. I guess it’s just balancing itself out.
