NRL action for round 13 ends with the Newcastle Knights taking on the Manly Sea Eagles in the city of Newcastle. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 4.05pm AEST.
With a few of the Newcastle Knights players not being called up for Origin, the Knights find themselves with a stronger lineup than expected.
Kalyn Ponga will play fullback for the first time in 2023, with Tyson Gamble partnering Jackson Hastings in the halves while Lachlan Miller finds himself demoted to the bench. Adam Elliott starts at lock, while Jack Johns replaces Tyson Frizell (Origin) in the second row.
Manly will be brimming with confidence after a stellar performance in the Australian capital to get back to winning ways. However, it comes at a cost with all of the Trbojevic brothers out to injury bar Tom who is on Origin duty.
Mid-season signing Jakob Arthur is named in the 22 man squad, but it’s Cooper Johns who has a crack at halfback in the absence of Daly Cherry-Evans. Lachlan Croker will be the skipper while Christian Tuipulotu is set to come off the bench for his first NRL game in four weeks.
Losing half of the spine for Manly will hurt them, especially when they rely heavily on the game management of Cherry-Evans. If Cooper Johns can kick Manly out of trouble when needed, it will give Josh Schuster the field position to create try scoring opportunities. However, expect Kalyn Ponga to fire a shot at the Queensland Maroons selectors with a man of the match performance. Knights by 6.

Why dosnt anyone know Koula was the fastest track 100 runner while playing league, YouTube has his record breaking 100 and there is Garrick Saab Turbo lol .

Koula broke the 100 track time as a teen and no one in Australia is running 10’s ! Speed in game can differ due effort on effort ect so fresh Koula covers the Nrl, Saab’s try of Garrick two weeks ago is curious cause he hit some pace to collect the ball and go. Bring back the league sprint comp !

Choppy, thoroughly deserved by your lads. No excuses. As an aside is it bad that whenever I see your name I read it as “Cletus”. But you aren’t from QLD, so I have no idea why I see it that way

Oh not as yet, but when his contract is up, he will. We like helping the Roosters. Everyone likes helping the Roosters

Just ignore him EJ. Not worth dignifying his absurd comments with a reply.

Bad luck Manly fans. Some of those calls were pure stinkers, and Croker and Ola were great. Got loads of time for Croker. He is tough as, is massive effort but has some cleverness about his game.

Sloppy old game from Manly, but well played Knights.

Well done Knights. That left edge just played with us all night. But a fair bit of heart shown for Manly to stay in the contest. Jakob Arthur > Cooper Johns as a backup.

Thank you all for joining the blog this afternoon/evening. I will be sacrificing my sleep tonight watching the IPL final before jetting off to Adelaide tomorrow morning for Origin I. Take care, enjoy your week and an early goodnight

FULL TIME NEW 28 MAN 18 Manly will feel hard done by a few calls, but they were far too indisciplined to get away with it. I thought Kalyn Ponga was brilliant today and you could see he was far more confident in attack as a fullback compared to playing in the halves. Not the prettiest game at times, but a win is a win for Newcastle

Sounds like the cue to give the Tomintoul a belting. We’ll see how Manly fares against the Bye next week. What are the odds of Turbo getting injured in Origin do you reckon? Another good weekend of Footy though.

Thanks Arnab. Strange old game, but it was close keeping it interesting. Manly did well to stay in it as long as they did. It's a win, Knights, but far from great.
