Round 24 of the NRL premiership continues this afternoon when the South Sydney Rabbitohs take on the St George Illawarra Dragons at Barlow Park in Cairns. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3:00pm (AEST).

The Rabbitohs’ magical mystery tour of Australia continues this round. Perth one week, Cairns the next. It’s taking their brand to various parts of the country, but this week the most important part is to get the win.

South Sydney lost 26-16 to the Sharks last weekend, but the end result flattered the Rabbitohs. 26-0 down, after 60 minutes, to a team short of confidence, was a poor look.

It wasn’t that long ago that South Sydney were viewed as legitimate premiership contenders. They clearly have the squad on paper to go deep in September. However, Origin seems to have stalled their progress and things are getting a little desperate.

In team changes, Shaquai Mitchell comes in for the suspended Thomas Burgess. Jacob Host and Taane Milne both come into the line up. Jai Arrow has been named but must be in some doubt.

The Dragons were perhaps unlucky last weekend against the Eels, going down 26-20 in a thriller. However, with a 20-10 lead after 50 minutes, they should have gone on with the job.

It does prove though that the Dragons are no pushover at the back end of this season. In recent weeks, Tyrell Sloan and Mikaele Ravalawa have been damaging on their right edge, so Alex Johnston could be in for a rugged afternoon.

Francis Molo is out due to concussion protocols, so brother Michael moves to prop, Ben Murdoch-Masila has been named at lock and Toby Couchman gets a spot on the bench. Moses Suli returns from injury. In a big blow, Zac Lomax is out with a shoulder injury and is replaced by Max Feagai.

Prediction

I think this will be a lot closer than most people will think.

However, the Rabbitohs need to win to stay in the top 8 and that motivation should prove enough. Rabbitohs by 8

Thanks, David. Souths will feel relieved with that performance, but it wasn't pleasant viewing. They have a lot of work to do if they want to make that finals charge. Good to see the Dragons try to put up a challenge rather than capitulate. Bunker was perplexing.

Yeah I get that. The Couchman twins are keepers, and Russell has gone pretty good the last few weeks. The young hooker looks ok too. Flanagan has got a heap of work to do to turn this club around, especially in defence. It’s good to see some of these younger kids getting a go, something that Griffin didn’t do with his dads army signings. The only way is up, hopefully a couple of good signing in the next few months and a fresh plan, and belief in it by the players

Yeah, when your struggling like we are, those close calls really hurt because you need everything to go your way when you aren’t very good. I just get frustrated, not just with dragons games, but the inconsistencies and blatant mistakes by the bunker aren’t good enough. The refs making errors in real time I can wear but not some of the calls the bunker dishes up, it’s incompetent

I’ve heard of ‘winning ugly’, but that was ‘winning Elephant Man’! The Dragons kept themselves from winning by knocking on when presented a chance to do so. Souths won’t make the 8 playing like this.

The Dragons tried hard but their mistake rate was just too high this afternoon. They will try and upset the Storm at Wollongong next weekend

It wasn't a great performance from the Rabbitohs but the most important thing for them was the 2 competition points and they climb back into the 8. South Sydney takes on the Knights away next round in a match which will shape the 8

It's hard enough watching low quality games like that without the bunker blooper making it worse. Good on Souths, the better team and deserved winners.

Dragons put up a fight which is good. Maybe the seed lies buried beneath the snow awaiting Spring.

After this result the Rabbits should rise in the power rankings, 3rd to 2nd methinks.

Well that was unconvincing. Short one of the worst bunker calls I’ve ever seen that would have been even closer.
