Match preview

State of Origin gets underway for 2021 with Game 1 between the Queensland Maroons and New South Wales Blues at Townville’s Queensland Country Bank Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 8.10pm (AEST).

As is often the case, the class New South Wales possesses across the park has them instilled as firm favourites for the first of the three-game State of Origin series. We have seen and heard this scenario unfold many, many times before, with Queensland’s backs against the wall spirit put up against the supposed superiority of the Blues.

Often, the apple cart is overturned, as it was in 2020 when Queensland secured what was, for many, a surprising series win. Tonight, New South Wales will be out to ensure that such a shock does not occur in the opening fixture of this instalment.

There is skill across both sides, yet with underdone and unavailable Maroons concerning many north of the border, the weight of money invested on the game does appear to be heading in the Blues’ direction.

Defeating a team with names like James Tedesco, Latrell Mitchell, Tom and Jake Trbojevic, Josh Addo-Carr, Nathan Cleary, Damien Cook and Cameron Murray may well appear a bridge too far.

However, Cameron Munster and Daly Cherry-Evans will attempt to take the reins of what looks a committed yet lesser side in terms of potency and deliver another in a long line of stunning upsets for the passionate Queenslanders.

The explosive and youthful Queensland pack could well be the dark horse in this one, with its sheer size and power potentially the key to a Maroon victory.

Prediction
COVID-19 has thrown the most Queensland-friendly spanner into the works by impacting Victoria’s ability to host the opening match of the State of Origin series. Thus, Townsville will greet the Maroons and Blues tonight, with the nation set to see the most modern stadium in the land play host to one of the most intense and fiercest rivalries in Australian sport.

The Maroons will win this match off the back of a midfield dominance achieved in the forwards, with Tariq Sims, Isaah Yeo, Liam Martin and Junior Paulo proving a little out of their depth on the Origin stage.

Couldn't agree more - fantastic to watch after the rubbish I've had to put up with following the Raiders this season

There won't be any action on the kicking, cause then both Cleary and Munster will be in trouble, and NSW need Cleary more then we need munster.

Tap the brakes there Joe. Papalli and full minutes from Welch? I’d call that a fairly decent upgrade from the current Titans front row. Can’t downplay NSW’s dominance, but blowouts don’t mean what they used to. Front row rotation was always going to be an issue. Losing Welch was a game changer. Queensland WILL win the forward battle in Brisbane. Game on!

That’s not what Rossini’s talking about. QLDs were interfering and offside just as much as NSW but only one side was getting 6-again. Haven’t even mentioned the head shots or kicking. Seems you are plenty aware of how dodge some of the plays were though.

Wasn’t a lot of vagaries around the head contact, or the kicking, or knees in the back. Desperate teams do desperate things, but what they were doing and why, was about as in-vague as you get.

I remember the comment that Dane Carlaw "looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane." Not sure who said it, though.

That centre pairing was awesome. To have Tedesco have a relatively quiet game in attack and then pop up at the end with a brilliant assist must scare the hell out of the Qld backs
