Josh McGuire charged with 80th minute 'dog shot' on James Maloney

By The Roar / Editor

Queensland enforcer, Josh McGuire, has been hit with a Grade 1 dangerous contact charge by the Match Review Committee.

The serial offender will spend one week on the sidelines for his late hit on NSW five-eighth, James Maloney, just seconds before full-time was called in Game 2 of the 2019 Origin series.

Due to McGuire’s long list of on-field misdemeanours over the past two years, the charge will carry a 20% loading on the standard 100 points, meaning he will miss the Cowboys match against Dragons on Friday night regardless of his plea.

Fortunately for Queensland, he will still be available for Game 3 on July 10.

Unfortunate to call it a ‘dog-shot’- the majority of dogs are far better behaved. Paul Green quoted as saying Freddy unfairly targeted him because of his recent incidents- ie. eye- gouging, & stating he is an aggressive player. I get ‘standing up for your players’ however, as per the majority of comments herein, the public, including myself, see him as a thug. There is ‘being an aggressive player’ & being a moronic thug. Not a good call Green, not as a representation of NRL. Was apparent in the SOO game that the thug was a very sore loser. Easier to pick on the smaller guys. Long- term suspension wouldn’t get the message through. He won’t change.

That’s a bit rough ducking under the first swinging arm to then get collected by the next one.

No excuse for Maguire and he should have been banned from Origin 3. Instead, he misses the Cowboys next game (which he will get paid for any way), and is available for the financial reward of playing Origin 3... Great punishment.... Interesting that his three attacks this year have been on a couple of pests and a grubby human - so maybe there is some selection with who he attacks and it isn't random. Don't know if that is better or worse...

Fathers would love their sons to play the football they love. But mothers determine the footy they choose. This does not promote NRL in a good light. There is nothing manly in what he did. It was late, it was cheap and it was 'oh so brave'. As a Maroon's supporter I'm embarrassed.

Is he trying to do his best Paul Gallen impression? For starters, the Maroons have got him playing the wrong position. He’s a prop, not a lock

There are times in the modern game when the get square methods of the 60s and 70s deserve a target and McGuire is one of them. How a creature like him is allowed to get away with his thuggish play is beyond me. This point system for offences is all well and good but for someone like McGuire the points book needs throwing out and a decent suspension, say 10-15 games, be handed down to get a message through. I said this same statement today in conversation with someone and he said McGuire would be too thick to take heed.

Moose The Goose will long be remembered for his philosophical quote "losers have meetings. Winners have parties". I assume he wasn't partying last night.

this grub has a array of low acts in his inventory and uses them at whim and will. match review committee is a joke - this serial offender needs some time away to get stuff into his melon

This guy has a habit of sneaking in the odd let us say,( over the top shot )on an opposition player. He needs a decent standing down time, giving him time to reassess his dubious antics. If little is done now, it will get out of control down the line.

Good. As much as QLD doesn't have the depth to survive his suspension I think he should get the next origin match instead. Cheap shots aren't tough (though tough to have much sympathy for Maloney)

This guy is a serial cheap shot merchant, and always on players half his size. How about a GoFundMe page to cover the cost of an opposition forward to belt this grub.

McGuire is a disgrace and has plenty of form in this area. IMO, he should have copped a long suspension rather than a fine for the eye gouge on Dylan Walker, in which case he wouldn't have been playing this game regardless.
