Sam Burgess placed on report after coathanger tackle

By The Roar / Editor

Not what the Souths captain was hoping for on his return to the game.

Regardless, it was still high whether it rode up off his chest or not. I would say he was unlucky as there were plenty of high shots where nothing was done.

You know where Burgess could have tackled Moylan? Around his ankles, his upper legs, his waist, even his ribs. All were exposed, all were close by as were his fellow defenders. He chooses to go high. The only reason you go high in that situation is you are either lazy or intent to hurt, and given it was in about the 5th minute, it isn't laziness.

Unless the Bunnies pull a rabbit out of the hat they are going down to the Storm next week big time. That will further hurt their points differential which will put them at a distinct disadvantage against the 3 other top 4 teams going forward. With Manly likely to beat the Warriors next week that will put Souths out of the top 4 but with plenty of time left to make a move in their remaining 4 games. The bottom line is that this loss hurt the Rabbitohs chances of finishing in the top 2, securing a hime ground advantage in week 1 of the finals and avoiding playing the Storm in Melbourne like last year. There is a real danger now that if Souths can still make the top 4 they will be facing the Storm in week 1. Talk about déjà vu. Still, with AJ due back soon and Sam a week or two away I think Souths are still more than capable of playing themselves into form for the finals. But they need a LOT of work on their defence based on their last performance!

"After last night’s effort, at a time Souths needed Sam the most facing the competition leaders the Storm next week, Sam looks as good as gone for that game."... I think that's what I'd be rather peeved about as a Bunnies supporter to be honest PS. The loss against the Sharks places Souths in a fairly parlous situation with respect to the top four - a position a team must finish in to win a premiership IMO. I'm in no way saying that they won't remain in the top four but the game against the Storm is crucial and it wouldn't surprise me if, at this time next week, Manly has taken the fourth spot (at least temporarily). Sam has had a lot of time off and should be cognisant of South's position - he is a leader at the club. I can understand your disappointment and frustration and that of many Rabbitoh supporters. You're right - he was selfish, self indulgent (and stupid). Hope it doesn't bite the Bunnies on the ar$e in what has been a very good season. (Go Bulldogs!) ;)

He wouldn't get a start with any off those teams.Sam's one of the most overrated player in the NRL - living off past glories. You keep him Bunnies and good luck with him for the rest of the year - the number of minutes he plays.

Except the penalty was already given.... unless he was trying to get the referee to blow his whistle twice just to be sure...

papi, the only cat at the ground was S Burgess - his constant cheap shots on smaller guys is so pathetically predictable. Couple of decades ago so called tough guys like Sam would have been sorted out within 5 mins by the opposing enforcer(s) .The elbow facial to Gal was another cat act knowing Gal would've been sent if he came up swinging, and we know who would have ended up in hospital, which the Sam Cat deserves.

Souths are a better team with Lowe than Burgess anyway. Lowe doesn’t drop balls, give away soft or stupid penalties, make poor defensive decisions or fire up opponents.

No, Reyno just wanted a breather. Or perhaps he was genuinely concerned.

He tried to get up straight away, note Adam Reynolds closest to the crunch of bone on bone is telling him to stay down...he must have wanted Sam in the bin, too, you reckon..

Why act? a) sin-bin b) send off Sam's reputation and his ability to piss refs off meant that either A or B was on the cards. Moylan was laughing with the trainer seconds later. How do you go from nearly unconscious to that in seconds unless you are acting in the first place?

The referee blew the whistle as Moylans body hit the ground..why act if the penalty has already been given ? Sams been rightly charged ,Benny has smoke coming from his ears about constant ill discipline from that family ..but in La La land we blame Moylan..

Like many Rabbitohs supporters I will always defend Sam Burgess and wax lyrical about his leadership qualities and his importance to the side as a leader. Sam's performance last night was at times selfish and self-indulgent. After being out for SO LONG the LAST thing the club needed was for their club captain to show so little self-discipline or regard for the club going forward to risk spending a further extended period on the sidelines! Sam frustrates the hell out of me! On one hand he is one of the club's legends and one of my favourite players to ever wear the cardinal and myrtle. Having spoken to him a few times as a "Joe average" supporter he has been courteous, unassuming and gracious with his time and humble to a fault. Yet Sam insists on playing the game like it is retro round every week and he is playing in the 70's where a forward could get away with almost anything. But times have changed and Sam has to acclimate himself to the current times. IMO going forward, John Sutton is more suited to the role of on-field captain and Sam Burgess needs someone like Sutto who can get in his ear and tell him to cut out the rubbish. To Souths to have even half a chance of winning over the referees Sam Burgess CANNOT be the focal point for officials on-field. At present the referees just cut Sam off and shut him out because, like the other pommie 70's throwback James Graham, he is too aggressive and too passionate in approaching the referees. He is also one of the repeat offenders in no small part because he is scrutinised more closely than any two other players together. Unfortunately, Sam is also "the boy who cried wolf!" one time too many. After last night's effort, at a time Souths needed Sam the most facing the competition leaders the Storm next week, Sam looks as good as gone for that game. Tough as it is to admit it, this time around Souths might actually be better off with Jaydn Su'A taking his place and with any luck, Tom Amone replacing Mark Nicholls. I can only hope that privately behind the scenes Bennett is working to remove the rubbish from Sam's game because when he focuses on playing within the rules he is one of the best forwards to have ever played the game IMO.

I agree about the perception of Burgess but that’s mostly of his own making. He plays close to the line and has a long history of crossing it. Lots of cases to answer and it’s fair enough that his actions get a bit more scrutiny. For what it’s worth I think Jurbo got off very lightly but at the same time he’s pretty much a cleanskin who’s made one mistake as opposed to a serial offender. A bit of variation in how their offences are viewed is warranted.

Dale Finucane gets away with punching Matt Lodge right infront of the ref and the Storm get the penalty and no one on the ROAR has a problem with that. If it was Sam Burgess they would all be crying out for a send off and a 6 week suspension! Talk about hypocrisy and double standards! Sam Burgess is refereed eith more bias and prejudice tgen any two other players combined. If he played for the Sttorm, the Roosters, the Broncos or Manly not a word would be said. Pathetic!

Moylan is a puss and that was no head high! The NRL is becoming just like soccer with academy award acts being handed out every week! You can have a go at Sam all you want, he will get the usual 1 or 2 weeks or whatever but ‘he will be back’ and I wouldn’t be putting too many warps on the Sharks, they have been very ordinary all year! Lets see how they go from now on?

I agree TB....his discipline is just hopeless.....which is what other sides play on. The Sharkies did it well last night....baited him in his first hit up and he reacted like a meat head. Neither of his indiscretions though are worth a week on the sidelines....its only because he's Sam Burgess that they even get mentioned. Can you imagine what he would have got if he did what Jake Turbo did last week? He would have been out for 6 weeks minimum.........Jake, because he's a good bloke gets off scott free.

Well that didn’t take long. Wasn’t the worst hit in the world, but it was high and with his track record a week with an early plea is about right. It’s interesting Souths fans jump to his defence. I’d be pretty disappointed that on end my best players is so continually ill disciplined, especially after missing so much footy this year. Wayne Bennett certainly wasn’t impressed. The elbow into Gallen’s head was another example. Not the worst crime in the world, but it was co pletely unnecessary right under the referee’s nose. Again, Souths fans blindly defending him but that doesn’t happen in every tackle in every game. Wade Graham embarrassed Burgess at times last night so Sam would be better placed concentrating on his footy rather than the grimy bits of his game.
