Why Joey Johns believes Latrell Mitchell switching to fullback is a mistake

By The Roar / Editor

‘He’s not a fullback… he’s the best strike centre in the game.’

His work rate at centre was practically non existent so just imagine him at Fullback

Have you seen his brother. Could be a family gene.

He will need to be on top of his nutrition too. It appears he just doesn't have naturally lean genetics like many elite athletes do. So he needs to realise he can't just eat what he wants, thinking training will burn it off.

Greg Inglis who was about the same height and weight doesn't count?

Fullbacks have evolved. As I commented last time you said the same thing, in the 00s there basically was no 100kg+ fullbacks. In the 2010s we've seen Inglis play there at 115kg and a number of fullbacks closer to 105kg. The role has evolved, and fullbacks have evolved into bigger players also.

Does he lack it? Or has he just never needed it? He was able to float in and out and be the best centre in the game.

If he can't control his weight could finish up like his brother. Geez the last big fullback at South's was Kevin Longbottom, although by today's standards he was small.

He was only ‘ok’ at fullback a couple of seasons ago... but from memory it was good first season in first grade I think he’ll need to work on how he positions players around him and how he ball plays and obviously his fitness. His natural power plays and offloads in traffic aren’t necessarily suited to fullback I think he can make it. Unfortunately he’ll be judged on a steep curve as he always seems to be. As soon as he has a poor game - which he’ll have a few - we’ll get the old “he’s not interested” comments

Joe, Greg Inglis throughout his playing days showed he had a fair degree of concentration and ability to focus and that is why he was able to make the transition, Lockyer from full back to the halves focus, this is something that Latrell Mitchell seems to lack. Physically, provided fit and a hell of a lot fitter than he currently stands is already there we know that he can be a very damaging runner of the ball. However being fullback means 100% concentration for 80 minutes and being able to read the play unfolding in front of you. Kenny had it, Johns had it,Lockyer had it, Baa had it, Fairfax had it and Tedesco most certainly has it, a natural football brain and it is something you just cannot teach somebody

Well the basis for same build as inglis comments (assuming it isn't the bias) is just height and weight not actual body shape so he's got the same build as Steve price as well, heck add 5kg and he is SBW. Maybe latrell will play every position this year other than hooker or half back based on his build

Mitchell should realise that these days, in the NRL there are no 115kg fullbacks running around. the role of fullback has evolved....bigtime Mitchell just doesn't have the motor to be in the No.1 jumper

Looking at that vision, he sure has been in a good paddock this off season ! He might have to consider a prop position ?

His problem will be keeping his head in the game for the full 80 minutes, like Slater, Tedesco and the other real good fullbacks did, Joe. If he learns how to do that and maintains fitness as you suggest, he could be a good 'un for sure.

If he's fit and trims down he will absolutely be an awesome fullback. He can learn a lot from Inglis who has the same build.

Gagai thought he was a centre and Mitchell thinks he's a fullback. Dugan thought he was an elite player and the Sharks endorsed his thoughts. I would imagine if Mitchell puts in the fitness work and grows up a bit he could be a great fullback. He also seems to be capable of having a good old sulk if the season doesn't pan out well for him and the Bunnies and if that happens they'll wish they kept Douihei. I'll be interested to see if he's happy with at least double and maybe triple his previous workload on half the money he thinks he's worth.
