It’s time for knockout rugby with no second chances on the line as the ACT Brumbies host the Hurricanes on Saturday night in a Super Rugby Pacific Quarter Final. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:30pm (AEST).
It’s a bit like Groundhog Day with these side facing off for a quarterfinal in Canberra for the second year running and Brumbies fans will be hoping for a similar result.
The Brumbies have shuffled their starting side around and will be without the electric Corey Toole but do welcome back the newly re-signed James Slipper and Lachlan Lonergan in addition to Noah Lolesio on the bench.
Both sides are coming into this match with impressive wins in their last outing, with the Hurricanes come from behind win against the Crusaders giving them plenty of confidence heading to Canberra where they have struggled to win in recent years.
The Brumbies ended a form dip with a win over the Rebels and a return to their counter attacking abilities with two long range tries getting them over the line. They will have worked on their attacking breakdown with the Hurricanes back row trio lead by Ardie Savea ready to pounce on the timing issues the Rebels exposed last week.
The Hurricanes did win the return fixture between these sides in the round robin and the Brumbies can probably expect Dane Coles to put out the bait and see who bites with his carry on, but it will take a disciplined Brumbies side to not fall for his trap.
Jordie Barrett will hope he has packed his kicking boots after low success at GIO Stadium in recent years, including missing a game winning penalty goal attempt in 2021. In the knockout stages with no bonus points on offer, expect the territory kicking battle between Barrett and Jack Debrezceni to be a key factor in who takes the win and move on to the semi finals.
Prediction
The Brumbies are the one Aussie side that has any realistic hope of progressing to the semi-finals and I’m hoping they can get the job done, but it will be close.

They just failed to clear the ball from their own half. You'd think they might have booted it to b*gg*ry

Fyi. The Hurricanes aren't Wellington but an amalgamation of several provinces. They are based in Wellington.

Lucky in the sense.. ”hand under the ball” lucky.. most days that’s a try, brumbies eliminated lucky. I never said the Brumbies didn’t deserve it or earned it. They did what they needed to do to and repelled the Canes multiple times. The Canes had plenty of opportunities, but blew them. The Brumbies have a good team that could win the whole thing.. But beating 3 NZ teams in a row is rear. Can’t remember the last time an Aussie team managed that?

Deb also missed some tackles that led to tries

Not the ref, it’s credit to the hardworking Reds forwards.

It wasn’t one of their best games against the Reds, the Reds pack was getting on top of the Chiefs.. Thats why the Chiefs backs had limited input into the game. The Brumbies will apply similar tactics, dominate up front to slow the chiefs rucks down, this takes a lot of the chiefs striking power away. Pretty much eliminated DMac from the game. Chiefs pack can’t be bullied around, they’ll need to grow a pair and start attacking the brumbies up front.

The video evidence was inconclusive as whether the ball touched grass despite yours & Ardie's certainty. But to to most who saw the hand under the ball including the TMO indicated thet the ref got it right. Fine margins either way. Hurricanes are a good side but the Brums did score 6 tries. Cheers

Yeah that was sarcasm. NL also nailed the sideline conversion that forced Canes to have to go for a try to win. Otherwise Canes kick any one of the penalties right in front an it ends in tears.

I might be getting it confused. Looked like a clear shot of it on the ground at one stage to me. The problem is it goes up no try (the ref has no idea really and makes a guess) and then you need compelling evidence to overturn. I thought what was shown was conclusive enough, but the TMO didn’t think so. It’s disappointing. Looking back though they had so many chances to ice it in that last 5 mins…is what it is.

Now expect 10 losses in a row. My hairs looking in worse shape than Homer Simpson's after that match.
