The Crusaders and Brumbies will look to get their Trans-Tasman campaigns off to a winning start as two of the best teams in the competition go head to head in Christchurch. This is the game of the round so make sure you join The Roar for live scores and a blog starting from 5:05pm (AEST).
The Crusaders will be full of confidence after their impressive victory in last week’s Super Rugby Aotearoa final, while the Brumbies may well still be wondering how on earth they lost again in injury time to the Reds.
Both sides have made a number of changes from the starting lineups that ran out for their respective finals last weekend. For the home side, Scott Robertson has chosen to rest Mitch Drummond and Will Jordan for the week and has moved club captain Scott Barrett and winger Sevu Reece to the bench.
This will see Codie Taylor wear the skipper’s armband in his 100th game for the club with Mitch Dunshea joining Sam Whitelock in the second row and Bryn Hall getting the chance to start the match.
Whilst the Crusaders are missing some genuine talent, the Brumbies will know that they are in for one hell of a game. The challenge will be made harder thanks to some forced personnel swaps due to injury.
Nic White is out sadly and replaced by Ryan Lonergan whilst Nick Frost will get a chance to start at lock and Henry Stowers will get his run-on debut. Solomone Kata will also start and club hero Folau Fainga’a will return from injury to get his 50th Super Rugby cap.
The Brumbies are one of Australia’s best hopes in the Trans-Tasman competition and there will be lots of eyes as they take on the best the Kiwi comp has to offer. Especially interesting will be the battle between the fly-halves as young up-and-comer Noah Lolesio will see if he can impress compared to arguably the best player in the world right now in Richie Mo’unga.
Prediction
Both sides don’t have their ideal first XVs taking the field but that’s no excuse. Whilst the Brumbies are a very good side, they are not going to be a match for the Crusaders at home.

I believe all the referees wanted to take a look. They did however take an age to rule it as a no try which was surprising as it was was clearly not a try. The touchie made sure to make up for this with his clear bias to help the crusaders. It is obvious to everyone except those with one eye.

I don't disagree with him Banks needing to run harder into contact, but in SRAU he was leading try scorer, most carries, most run metres, most clean breaks and 5th for defenders beaten. He's not the best fullback in the world but he's the best fullback in Australia hands down.

Unlikely bias. But he’s clearly seen something that didn’t occur.

The ref was obstructing Lonergan's view of Havili who took the intercept, Lonergan wouldn't have seen him, a bit unlucky for Lonergan but a great piece of positional play from the Crusaders. Won't work every time though.

Ironically, the same AR is being accused of clear bias when he got the lineout call wrong later in the game. Not saying the call was right, but some are pointing a lot of fingers at clear bias, when sometimes, it’s just a mistake. He could have very easily said he didn’t see the foot, lord knows only one shot managed to barely pick it up. If he had got that wrong it would have been a lot less blatantly wrong than the lineout call. Refs gets things wrong. But i fear all we will hear about is perceived bias.

An incorrect call does not equal ‘clear bias’. I assume it was clear bias from the same touchie when he was insistent about looking at Blackadder’s try to be reviewed when Williams had already called it? Oh right, that doesn’t fit the narrative... my mistake, carry on...

He did throw a pass directly to the Crusaders 12 for their try from the ruck base. He is good, good enough to start for most teams, but he can be slow to clear and doesn’t set himself for passes, the intercept try illustrates this perfectly. White would never throw that pass after needing to step over or around another player at the base of a ruck.

Lonergan looked supreme in every aspect. His passing speed was the fastest I've seen from any Oz 9 in years. He needs to be starting. I think another team may need to pick him up to do so

Yes they checked it. Deemed it forward but not forward enough.

Agreed they did the best they could. They scrapped well.

Fines has been backing up on the wing and been devastating, would be their 3rd fastest back after banks and Wright. Deserves to be a match day 23 regular somewhere for sure.

Like I said it would probably be given most of the time - if you wanted to *find* a reason to not give it then you would rule that the line that marks the last feet of the ruck would be drawn from the brumbies player who was part of the ruck - which makes him offside - but it would be harsh to do that - my point is more that you *could* do that - so the video ref’s decision is still subjective - and in this along with 2 other decisions that led to points it went the way of the crusaders.

Their scrum is problematic however it was impressive how both 9s were clearing the scrappy ball anyway (esp from 2nd half)

leiwasa-fines also looked very good when he came on. Quick to rucks, great passing and he's legit fast - was backing up Banks for that try. Keen to see more of him.

Better throw in the intercept pass and over running scrum defence that cost two tries

McKellar will never be a wallabies coach while Rennie is there. Aru and Rennie have found out about him and Laurie fisher is the main man!

He scored an insane solo try against some Saffa team in 2018.

Someone was telling the ref, he ignored them. Heard it clear as day through the Apple supplied headphones.

Has Noah played their before? May be one of those fields that are hard to get the weighting right. The first one was a great kick though, he should always do that style just aimed 2m further down field. Flat and into space with no time for lifters and team mates to react. Could create a few turnovers from it.
