The Queensland Reds will be looking to end their Super Rugby Trans-Tasman campaign with a win when they travel to Wellington to take on the Hurricanes. Follow along as the fifth and final round of the tournament begins with live scores on The Roar from 5:05pm (AEST).

While the Reds are one of only two Australian sides to have managed a victory against a New Zealand counterpart this tournament, it has been a far cry from their dominance of the Aussie-only series.

The reigning Super Rugby AU champs have looked a class below three of the four sides they’ve played, while they were perhaps a touch lucky to hang on to beat the Chiefs in Round 3.

The Reds (and the Wallabies) have been dealt a major blow ahead of this match, with the in-form Suliasi Vunivalu out with a hamstring strain. The NRL convert has been a relevation in year one of his code-swap, tied for most tries in the Trans-Tasman competition, and replacing him will be a difficult task for Josh Flook, who comes off the bench. James O’Connor remains unavailable through his neck campaign, leaving him stranded on 99 Super Rugby matches as the tournament wraps up.

Barring a miracle, the Hurricanes, like the Reds, will also be bowing out of the competition this weekend. They would need two of the Blues, Crusaders and Highlanders to lose their upcoming matches – not impossible, but hardly likely given the way this tournament has gone. However, given they will play before any of them, the ‘Canes have no choice but to win and keep that faint flame flickering.

Given their healthy points differential, Jordie Barrett’s uncharacteristic twin misses at the death in last week’s thrilling 12-10 loss to the Brumbies in Canberra will likely cost them a final berth. If nothing else, they will still want to farewell Ngani Laumape with a win as he prepares to move to Top 14 club Stade Francais at season’s end.

Yes, the ref said that. As did you. And it’s my opinion until someone can point to the law otherwise, that both of you are wrong. Not saying that I agree with the law, but there was no deceptive dropping movement by the ball carrier, so according to law, no mitigating factor.

It's news to me that the Chiefs played in the SR AU final. Maybe there really is an alternate universe.

Hang on. Who was Gregan playing for? The Reds or the Saders?

nroko, I see the video differently. The Reds player kept his height pretty much as soon as he caught the ball and charged into the enemy. A Canes player tackled him around the chest area but A.Blyth (Reds player) does NOT change his height, he remains slightly bent at about 30° to the vertical. In comes Lomax, bent about the same angle and bangs his shoulder STRAIGHT into Blyth’s face. That is a red card and 6 weeks every day of the week, in every country and whether its RL or Union. No BS excuses. I won’t call the referee biased towards the Kiwi teams (about 600 others have, and some are fair-minded Kiwis you will note). For mine the only thing that makes any sense is the Kiwi referees have made a pact that except for stiff arms, punching, tackles over the horizontal and head straight into ground and perhaps murder, then they will mitigate it to a yellow. Perhaps I am wrong but the only reds I can recall in the whole TT have been dished out by Aussie referees, and they were on both Aussie and Kiwi players. If my hypothesis above is correct then that explains why 3-4 Kiwi players during the TT are still playing rather than under suspension. A couple of them were like Lomax here, total shocker decisions. I can’t think of any Aussies in that much strife under a Kiwi ref but then my bias may be killing my memory.

"If not , something is missing in the selectors’ dinner plate." I've not heard this phrase before. Lately I've been blaming the Eds for my stuff ups but I think the wife is getting suspicious. Wife: You forgot to put the bin out last night. Again. Me: There was something missing on my dinner plate.

No, it wasn't SBW against the Lions he did it against France in late 2017. I Google searched it; "Sonny Bill Williams is in hot water again after a brain explosion cost the All Blacks a penalty try against France. The midfielder - who was sent off during the British and Irish Lions series in New Zealand in June-July - spent 10 minutes in the cooler early in the second half. Williams clearly forgot he was not playing rugby league - his first sporting love - when he deliberately slapped the ball into touch in the All Blacks' in-goal area." The end result was the same although the circumstances were different.

Hi Chook, Of course your views are like mine, not having much value in terms of changing the result. And I believe the law in this area is pretty over the top and contrary to the best interests of rugby. Do you remember Sonny-Bill ending up with the same penalties when playing for the ABs. That to me was crazy. (Was that against the Lions?) But regarding the replays of this play, I saw a number of replays from different angles and it was clear from them (to me anyway) that the defending player actually and deliberately pressed forward with his hands to push the ball forward (and over the dead ball line). Obviously others have different views of what happened and that's life. But I'm not so happy with the abuse the ref has been receiving for what I believe was the correct decision. Even worse, he's a good Dunedin boy, born and breed, a young and promising ref who I'd like to see develop a successful career.

Hi Scotty, if the determination is made that knocking the ball dead to prevent the try was clear the law states (in my words) that the referee has to decide would a try have scored if the offender was not there to commit his offence. That is, if the Hurricanes player was chasing the ball on his own would he have scored. The answer to that based on replays available, yes.

Dean, I didn't watch HP that closely, the main thing I saw was Laumaupe running over, around and by-passing him. Not sure how many breaks he made but was not obvious to me as I getting depressed watching the forwards mostly. Did strike me that Isaac Henry was up for the contest and he looks like he has potential.

Hi Colvin... yeah fair enough that's what you saw, but I saw two opposing players going for the ball at breakneck speed, and at the point of impact the attacking player sliding underneath the defending player... both players with palms down making a play for the ball. Unfortunately, slow-mo vision usually makes things look a lot different than what they really were in normal speed... but regardless there's some serious assumptions about what was actually going on here. And the ensuring 'penalties' were, for mine, an over-zealous read on on that and what the actualities were, therefore overkill. This was way too much... just a penalty for a 'possible' bit of foul play. Move on, this is not a train wreck!

It isn’t clear at all. Hegarty’s arm is moving downwards and is then obstructed by the Canes players arm from completing the grounding. There is no clear evidence that he intentionally knocks the ball out and there is no clear evidence that the Canes would have scored a try in any case. To me the clearest evidence that was ignored in the game was a Canes no arm - shoulder to the head of a Reds player. Every other game that has been a red card. Yes the reds player was low but he didn’t get lower as the ‘tackle’ was being made. No arms + direct contact to the head = red card. Every single time.

Hi Chook, re the penalty try, it's pretty clear the Reds player deliberately knocked the ball dead, away from the Hurricanes player preventing him from scoring a try, rather than attempting the more risky approach of trying to force it. Any consequences of that act I imagine are covered in the laws of rugby.

Well that's what the referee thought. Mind you given everything else he thought it has me questioning my existence

Firstly, congrats to the Canes albeit Kiwi sides, in general, for their dominance of results in this hastily put together TT rugby comp... and if your intent was to dominate you succeeded. Done good! And talking of 'intent' and 'Done good'... the issue of Refs, Asst. Refs and TMOs, and the impact they can have on a game, needs to be addressed. If players can be dropped for poor form after a Monday review... then these buggers need the same done. The YC given for cynical play to 'Done good' was at best a penalty for entering the ruck illegally... and tbh if YCs are now 'the' penalty, as in this case, then we wouldn't have anyone on the field such has been the situation in all previous games in TT. Consistency of application is way overdue here. Then that chat fest by the all officials that resulted in the 'penalty try' plus another YC, this time to Hegarty, for the 'intent' to knock the ball outta play when diving for the ball, was just way too much officialdom. Ffs when I heard the Ref ask the TMO to tell him if there was 'intent' I was beside myself. Really? Again, at best a penalty, but to then award a penalty try plus another YC was plain ridiculous... and a blight on our game. If we can now mitigate 'intent' for a dangerous tackle then surely we can mitigate 'intent' when it comes to situations like this debacle. It's as if Hegarty had committed a heinous act of play.

Well this game comfirmed a few more things about the Reds imo. Stewart is a much better no 10 than Hegarty. Hegardy is a poor strategic kicker. McReight is a better no 7 than Wright. Reds are an ordinary team without JoC. Tupou doesn't tackle.

Kiwi roarers rightfully pointing out that Australian whinging about kiwi reffing does not address the reality that overall the kiwi teams are clearly superior. However you only have to see the gigantic bleating that erupts from the shaky isles on the rare occasions the ref favours Aus teams against kiwi teams (exhibit 1, Qld v Chiefs this year) to acknowledge that home town/same country refs remain a serious problem. It was a major factor in cruelling the integrity and thus interest in the old super rugby (the legendary 20-1 penalty count in SA) and needs to be addressed by the administrators.

The over-officiating by the TMO and the pedantic application of the laws by the on-field ref reinforced why I barely watch the code anymore. Which is a great shame because the style of rugby from both the Reds and Canes makes for a fast open game, but just hard to watch when the officials feel the need to impose themselves. Laumape and Barrett were outstanding as was Tate McDermott.
