The Reds hosts the Waratahs tonight at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match starting from 7:05pm (AEST).

This is the best opportunity for the Reds to finally win a match against their oldest rival, the Waratahs. They have not beaten the New South Welshmen for seven years, the closest match being a three-point loss in April 2017.

Preceded by the departure of their CEO to suddently join the rampaging Blues in Auckland, the Waratahs are having one of their worst years for a good part of a decade. They suffered large losses in all but one of their shuttered Super Rugby campaign.

They have lost a few players, including Waratahs poster boy Kurtley Beale, who has gone overseas. They are literally hamstrung by hamstring injuries to Jake Gordon, Lalakai Foketi and Karmichael Hunt.

This is the first match with new trial laws and interpretations, some of which mirror the New Zealand adjustments. As highlighted by Rugby Australia, teams are able to replace red-carded players after 20 minutes. The five-metre defensive scrum will be replaced by a league-style goal-line drop out. If a player kicks the ball into touch on the bounce from inside their own half to opposition 22, the kicking team gets the lineout. This kicking advantage should open up the field for attacks as players are expected drop back to defend against it.

The most important are the changes in breakdown adjudication by the referee. Today’s man in the middle is Nic Berry, who I believe has been practicing officiating of these breakdowns with the Australian team during their training sessions.

This is where the Reds will be licking their lips, in particular skipper Liam Wright, Harry Wilson and fellow rookie Frazer McReight, who will plan to use their size and stamina to rule the breakdown. The Waratahs pilferers are not slackers either, with Michael Hooper, powerman Lachland Swinton and huge hooker Robbie Abel. The 107-kilogram debutant Will Harris is an unknown factor. He will be judged today.

Due to the breakdown interpretation changes I expect turnovers and penalties to litter this game. I predict this to be a classic winner-takes-all, run-like-hell, helter-skelter game with plenty of counterattacks, especially from the Queenslanders.

The return of the great Jim McKay this year has created fantastic attacking results for the Reds. There may be many Reds set piece breaks and point scoring, especially of their own lineouts. Today three out of the four locks on both sides are Queenslanders, the exception being Ned Hanigan, the lightest of the lot.

Prediction
Many are predicting a drought-breaking win for the Queenslanders, which is hard to argue against. The ones who could spoil this are the young players from New South Wales. I expect their flyhalf, Will Harrison, to outwit James O’Conner if his pack helps him create opportunities.

Unfortunately Rob Penney has not yet worked out his winning combination. He also has too many rookies playing today, some even more inexperienced the Reds.

While the Waratahs will bring on significant enthusiasm, the Reds should win easily. But this is the first match, so who really knows?

Did they all turn up again next day? That way you can look a total half wit for repeating yourself. Other Roarers might even suspect you were drinking during the game.

Ando, try the https://www.rugby.com.au website, click the Fixtures & Results tab and you can even look up the player comparisons for info such as I quoted above. And you are correct, stats and figures don’t tell the whole picture but overall they do give a glimpse. The best one for me was seeing a Tahs match last year where K.Beale was given 2 tackles, 0 misses for the match. The fact he stood like a statue and watched 1 bloke run right past him, while two other times he trotted in the general direction of the ball carrier and again let in tries were not counted as he didn’t “attempt a tackle”. That’s why watching the match helps also. :stoked:

Best thing from the ref's side of things was that the discussion was broadcasted to the stadium and not just whisper whisper. I think it's a great initiative

He's definitely got the basics for fullback and a set of great hands. Also noticed a fair bit more pace than DHP. I just question his face to face defence and whether he would be up to scratch at a super/international level in that regard.

Both were offside at the ruck, in front of the last feet. Tupou left the ruck as soon as his shoulders weren't in contact, to pick the ball up he had to step back to the last foot and pick it up. Wright was able to go for the ball as soon as it was out/over the try line but he had to be behind the last feet before that.

That all depends on how far out the scrum is, then a YC afterwards.

Former youth soccer international Daugunu is a great kicker. Hegarty thinks he is but he can't make decent ground when kicking for touch and he was inconsistent with place kicks last night; poor kicking ghas cost teh reds dearly this season. Coach Goon was never involved in the kicking aspect of Rugby.

Harrison looks really good. I wish the Ref had provided a coherent explanation for disallowing the Topou and Wright tries

Better than Kearns but that's not a great hurdle to overcome.

Your guys are a must watch for the remainder of this season. Pity they may not play some of the kiwi teams. Looking forward to tonight's game. I think you will put away the Rebels but as I suggested the Reds by 10+ I won't make a prediction.

I’m just ecstatic to see the rugby back mate. Although I hope the Brumbies are a little better than the Reds/Tahs were last light. We traditionally struggle against Dave W’s Rebels though. We have only won 1/5 against them. Blew four half time leads in a row before this year.

Well done Qld. Closer than many of us thought but a win is a win. A fairly messy game and the Tahs lost all shape quite early but have to say I enjoyed that immensely. Felt like the proper QLD/NSW niggle and hate was back in a way that I don't think we've been able to say for years.

Birthday: Coaches, selections and insufficient depth have always been our issues. When it all comes together it is great, hope I live long enough to see it one more time. That game gave me some hope it is coming!

OOP: I thought Wright went alright (Poet?) at 6 but Swinton was outstanding at least there is some potential 6's where before there was none. I was very pleased with Maddocks and shows what a genuine 15 can do for a team. Enjoyed the game very much, did you? Reds v Brumbies could be a great game.

It appeared he was targeted by the Tahs which was certainly a factor. Just not sure what people saw.

Not as stupid as it sounds Chook. He would have heaps of information and at least he has been a commentator for a very long time. But there would be a huge outburst from a bunch of Twitterheads or he would suffer a relapse during a game and neither would please Fox.
