After an unexpected draw last week, Melbourne City will be keen to return to their winning ways when they host the Central Coast Mariners in a top-of-the-table blockbuster. Stay tuned to their A-League clash with live scores on The Roar from 7:10pm (AEDT).

City’s 2-2 draw with Wellington Phoenix last week broke a run of four straight losses that has all but secured them the Premier’s Plate. Victory here would put it beyond any doubt whatsoever.

The Mariners, though, are one of the few teams to have toppled City this year, 3-2 back in February. An upset win would see the long-time cellar dwellers move up into second spot on the table, but defeat would leave them vulnerable to the likes of Adelaide United and Macarthur FC waiting below.

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/not-so-marvellous-afl-optimistic-despite-drop-in-crowd-numbers-20210516-p57scw.html AFL Richmond had an 18k turn out at Marvel. Its only a 10k difference from City. Wellington had a 24k turn out.

City can still be strong from the perspective that a lot of players that have played out the season and will be a bit tired. Maybe McLaren and the crew might be back in time for the grand finals if it starts in mid June

CCM pressed hard but in their own defensive half so their counters were pretty slow and not very dangerous. A bunch of times it seemed like the CCM players kicked the ball forwards without much idea if their players are there or not.

For a number of weeks/months, the city active support are chanting for the full 90 minutes. Certainly adds to atmosphete that streaming will never capture. Its the best to be at a game on a cool winters night while the fans are marching on with the chants and your team is playing great football.

East coast bias is real, you may be an east Coast team but you get the pointy end of the stick as well just like adelaide, Perth and Wellington Goliath will always be favoured over David, it will be that way until the end of time

Now I'm looking forward to The Mariners fans becoming their 12th man and ensuring their team makes the finals. They certainly deserve to be there.

The support looked great again. I certainly enjoy seeing teams improve on the field and in the stands and Melbourne City are doing both. I'm also happy to see teams set a standard in terms of playing standard and style. When a team raises the standard it's up to the other clubs to rise too. It also looks like Kisnorbo is planning well for a different finals team when players are lost to the Socceroos. He certainly appears to be a passionate but thoughtful coach.

Relief after the drama of last night. Overall a terrific ad for the A-league with both sides giving it their all and the VAR drama was, well, madness. CCM under Stajcic came with a plan to press City and give us no time. It worked but not quite enough attacking threat in front of goals to take the game. Well done to Paddy in his first year as senior coach  Well done to City supporters and the active crew for turning out, especially during the fallow times.

Utterly shameful of VAR, but let’s be honest, like Americans & guns, nothing will change. Our relationship with VAR continues.
