The Socceroos take on their Asian rival South Korea at the Busan Asiad Stadium in Korea. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 9pm (AEST).

After the ultimate disappointment of the Asian Cup in the UAE, the Socceroos are back on the horse and planning their assault on the World Cup qualification process which begins this spring.

New manager Graham Arnold has selected a young and inexperienced squad in the hope of finding a few diamonds in the rough to add some depth and competitiveness to the squad. Those traits will be required in what will be a long and arduous qualifying campaign.

There are six Socceroo debutantes in the squad and 12 men with less than ten caps to their names. Just three men in the squad have played in excess of 20 matches for the national team.

The precise 11 and formation that Arnold chooses to employ tonight is unknown and the same can be said of the Korean team, however manager Paulo Bento has selected a full-strength squad and the Australians will be given a tough night at the office with the Taegeuk Warriors backed by a throbbing home crowd.

What will be certain is the experimental nature of the match, with the Socceroos looking to try out new faces and the Koreans also starting a new phase with some fresh blood emerging in their ranks over the last 12 months.

Andrew Redmayne stands on the brink of an emotional Socceroos debut, as do Brandon O’Neill and Ryan Williams. Terry Antonis will have another chance to impress after missed opportunities earlier in the year.

Awer Mabil will look to become Arnold’s go-to man for goal production, after some stunning moments in the Asian Cup and an excellent year in Europe.

Prediction
It is always tough to call friendly matches, with significant experimentation taking place and multiple substitutions assured.

However, the Koreans must go into this one as favourites, on the back of both the strength of their squad and the home advantage.

The Socceroos might surprise with a draw but the home side should manage a clear two goal victory if all goes to plan.

Can’t argue with any of that . There is an incredible lack of intelligence in any aspect of Australian soccer at the professional level on field and off field

Well, if you're going to throw in the likes of the Saudis, you're sort of making the point for me.

4-0 win over the Czech Republic, 2-1 win over Hungary. 3-2 win over Saudi Arabia. 1-1 draw against Denmark in the 2018 world cup. We are in a weaker era of the Australian national football team but we are still competitive

Unlucky shouldn't be an excuse. But everyone uses it as an excuse, unlucky against South Korea in October, unlucky against Jordan, unlucky against uae and now unlucky against South Korea again. What annoys me is that Arnie is so arrogant before these games about expecting to win every game and when things don't go our way he makes excuses and goes on about how we dominated possession, how we had our opportunities and how we were the better team but still lost and that we would win our next game.

"We’ve now had five years solid of consistently losing against good opposition." Fake News. Alt-Fact 31 January 2015: Australia crowned Champions of Asia. Beating the very same opposition nation as last night.

We've now had five years solid of consistenttly losing against good opposition. On each occasion, these forums are the same: gee whiz, we were the better team; we were unlucky to lose; they only had the one chance and put it away; they only scored because of a deflection; or a penalty, when will our luck change, etc. etc. You can be unlucky losing a game of soccer once, maybe twice, but not for five years solid (against fair dinkum opposition). It stopped being a case of being unlucky a long, long time ago. When are the nuvo new dawners going to understand the game of soccer??

So, 1 effort in 90 minutes of football? I'll take that structure. Both Jurman & Wright were unimpressive. The midfielders, Amini & O'Neill did the job to break up the play, which protected the defence. Too often the AUS midfielders have not been held to account for their role in a team's defensive problems. Arnold fixed that last night.

"Korea didn’t even threaten once in open play". Remember Redmayne's save to deny Son? I wasn't too impressed with Bailey Wright who kept passing the ball to the opposition, kept fouling and made the error for the first goal. Jurman seemed composed though. And Amini was brilliant. I'm still unimpressed with the front three. Arnold has been in charge for nearly a year and we still have the same problem. We might not have a lot depth up front but we had no urgency, perhaps even no desire to score until the very end (which I thought was when we looked most likely to score). We've tried 15 attackers since Arnold was in charge (Mabil, Ikonomidis, Williams, Goodwin, Arzani, Giannou, Maclaren, Nabbout, Kruse, Leckie, Duke, Petratos, Juric, Boyle, Taggart). Now I'm starting to think it's Arnold that's the reason we can't score goals (apart from against Palestine, Syria, Oman behind closed doors, Lebanon and Kuwait).

Decent practice match for some players against a full-strength Korean team. Lots to like about the way we were structured. Korea didn't even threaten once in open play, which is a stark contrast to how it was 6 months ago when our first team played Korea in Brisbane & we were exposed again & again. Get the defence right first & then work on the attack. Arnie knows what he's doing.

That was woeful, as usual. We don’t have football intellect on-field any more, nor do we have it off-field. Too many people in high positions, plus commentators, all waxing lyrical about Aus football (and most other sports too), while in reality our under-funded and poorly planned youth systems are just generating players with a simplistic understanding of the game that can’t go further at adult level. The style of constant retreat play and dead possession over all else is killing us and sending us back to the 1950s, whilst the rest of the emerging footballing nations are running at defenders and disrupting defensive lines with fast prowess and intellect – seizing the opportunity of momentum and generating disruption whenever it presents. As a former contracted footballer, it’s a real struggle to watch this. Though both weren’t playing last night, decent players like Martin Boyle and Daniel Arzani display just how vastly different they present opportunities by running at defenders and disrupting their man-on-man defensive lines, throwing them into chaos. Poignantly, having never set foot in Australia as a junior, Martin Boyle never spent one single minute in the Australian youth system. What a stark difference he was displaying compared to all the other players before he was injured, even though he’s no standout on the world stage. Anyway, just a friendly game. Hopefully the new guys benefit from the experience.

Yes its more of the same. You could have written the script even, missed opportunities, near misses, frequent back passing, it was all there. I think this mob did show a little more promise though. Maybe better times coming, after all hope springs eternal

Stuart - continuing with a theme, I have had a look at the "young" players introduced last night and found that O'Neill is the youngest at 25. The others Redmayne 30,Grant 28,Jurman 29 and Duke at 28, can hardly be described as young, and when one considers all of them have played under Arnold before it could hardly be said they were "on trial". With recognised 'first choices" Ryan, Sainsbury, and Rogic, also coming under that description you can see Graham is surrounding himself with players he knows, and obviously 'trusts". 8 out of 11 is not a bad ratio. Your thoughts? Cheers jb.

When I watch the Socceroos (post Cahill) all I hope for is the opposition not score a goal, and we hang on for a 0-0 draw. It is a bit depressing.

'young' by your standards. Not 'young' by mine. 25 years old isn't young.

I felt Australia always looked a lot likelier to score at the end of the game. Ryan Williams and Borrello were good. Perhaps it's the urgency to score that was missing in the first sixty minutes. Personally, I think Australia should play with urgency ALL THE TIME, rather than building from the back and trying to pass through the Korean defense.

The Socceroos have gone down to Korea Republic by one goal to nil in the International friendly in Busan. Graham Arnold selected a young and experimental squad to tackle the powerful Koreans and for an extended period of time looked to have pulled a rabbit from his hat, with the home side struggling to break down the Socceroos. Early on James Jeggo, Mitchell Duke and Craig Goodwin pressed the Koreans hard and the back four, led by first time Socceroos captain Aziz Behich, held firm when required. Debutante Andrew Redmayne looked confident at the back and the Socceroos were the better side in the first 45 minutes. After the break the home side began to make some inroads through the Socceroos’ defence, as the intensity in Australia’s press began to wane. After an unlucky deflection from a Korean cross from the left edge of the box, U.Hwang clipped in the only goal of the game from close range at the near post in the 76th minute. It was a little fortunate for the home side yet they were building nicely throughout the second half and a goal seemed likely if they maintained their pressure in the front third. Arnold will be pleased with the effort of his inexperienced squad yet disappointed they were not able to grab a result against one of the powerhouses of Asia. There were great signs for the future with Jeggo and Ryan Williams looking particularly impressive and undoubtedly catching the managers’ eye. The next squad that Arnold selects will be a mixture of the youth on display tonight and some of the more seasoned European players enjoying breaks after a long season. Let’s hope that when he blends them together, the Socceroos become a formidable force in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Final Score Korea Republic…………..1 Australia…………………..0
