A-League Men action continues when Sydney FC takes on Western Sydney Wanderers in the Sydney Derby. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:45pm (AEST).

Inside the top six heading into Round 6 of the competition, both the Sky Blues and Wanderers will have eyes on a Derby win to claim bragging rights and keep pace with the high-flying Melbourne City. Sadly, much of the narrative throughout the week has focused on defector Milos Ninkovic after his move to Parramatta during the off-season.

Sydney fans are promising some fireworks and a real statement to be directed toward the Serbian international and the home side has clearly labelled the midfielder as an “enemy” leading into the match.

Outside the personal stuff that should really be left out of what stands to be a ripping night at the league’s flashiest stadium, a brilliant game of football will play out, with form suggesting that the teams are relatively close in terms of performance at this early stage of the season.

Sydney FC are scoring, yet leaking goals at the same time, whilst the Wanderers stumbled badly last week against the Mariners in an embarrassing 3-0 loss that seemed out of kilter with their results across the opening month of the season.

The scheduling has been nailed for this one, with the league set to break for a month whilst the World Cup takes place in Qatar and a crowd of somewhere near 40,000 keen to have a final dose of A-League Men action before the competition re-convenes in early December.

Western Sydney have appeared much more resilient at the back, bar their Round 5 performance, yet sometimes struggled to move forward with fluency. New recruits Joe Lolley and Robert Mak have the Sky Blues looking promising in attack yet the damn wall needs some work before coach Steve Corica will be happy defensively.

There are some big inclusions of note, with Adam le Fondre back for the Sky Blues and Oliver Bozanic and Kusini Yengi included in the Wanderers’ matchday squad.

Prediction

This will be one of those nights where Australian football shoves its best foot forward and the Sydney FC fans will finally enjoy their new stadium in full flight. Sadly, an upset looms in what could be a cagey affair to start before it opens up somewhat in the second half.

Western Sydney 2 Sydney FC 1.

I was at the game last night JB and I’m the first to admit - it wasn’t a great game. I don’t care though, it was a fantastic experience. It was worth the cost and hopefully all 34000 and some more are at the next game. If it helps build crowd numbers then great. Imagine if that crowd had been treated to the Mariners v Macarthur game today. The crowd numbers so far indicate our APL, FA and club administrators can get the average to 10000 this year and beyond in future years. They just need to keep working at it.

Stu - Watched all games played at weekend and apart from the tremendous atmosphere created by the crowd I found this game probably one of the poorer shows due to lack of quality football out on the field. Both sides lack quality players in important positions and therefor the higher incidence of error comes as no surprise to the "educated" observer. The fans here have been voicing their disappointments in certain players and some of them may be correct but there are better teams in the ALM at this moment and it is not until every game is assessed we see the real promise around the clubs, with some of the goals seen comparable with football anywhere. For those interested in how attendances are faring here are some figures compared to last season---- Games played in season 21/22 is - 34. Total crowd figure for season -243,081; In 22/23 Total crowd figure- 316,478 Increase 31% Average crowd for those 34 games is - In season 21/22- 6945, in season 22/23 -9308. Another interesting stat. is the increase in goals scored in the games. Last season 83, this season 107. An increase of 28% So perhaps out ALM is on the improve. Keep up the good work. Cheers jb.

Corica's day at Sydney FC are over, dud like Brattan, James Donache, should be farewelled before January transfer new window. Also Alex Wilkinson and Fondre should retire. Sydney should set their sights on two quality centre backs, two midfielders and a good striker. midfield is a joke after the departure of Brandon Oneil and Josh Brillante. bring back Arnold after the world cup!!!!!!!!

Hard to argue, watching Nieuwenhof live, he was everywhere, he reads the game so well, not stress despite being pressured. My MOTM easy. Bratten got suckered in to combat Ninko & came off very much 2nd best.

Ninkovic did a couple of classy things as expected from a player of his stature but Nieuwenhof was the clear difference. Generally Ninko was uninvolved as was Brattan who was almost totally anonymous apart from a v few dubious tackles.

Great crowd and so much noise and colour. I agree that disrespecting Ninko was not a good look. The Tifo was clever though :) And yes he was the difference last night.

You're a machine! What's the deal with A-League live blogs? I never see games on the roster. Do you just submit and hope for a blog, is there a separate roster, or some kind of arrangement with the eds? I'd be happy to call an Adelaide game or two, if possible.
