AFL trade rumours: Prestia, Gibbs deals close to confirmation

By Josh / Expert

Tick tock, tick tock. There’s two days left of the AFL trade period, and still a huge number of deals left to be done.

»All the trade rumours
»List of free agents
»Every trade and free agency move

The lastest in AFL trade rumours is that the majority of these deals seem to be nearing completion, with a good chance that by the end of the day, Dion Prestia, Jaeger O’Meara and Bryce Gibbs will all have new homes.

Prestia is likely to join Richmond, along with a second-round pick in this year’s draft, in exchange for pick No.6 from Richmond and the Tigers’ 2017 second-rounder.

O’Meara’s deal isn’t clear, but he may get to the Hawks without them giving up another player – instead they might swap pick No.10 and a later selection for him while the Suns will look elsewhere for a mature recruit.

There was some talk about Essendon trying to make a play for O’Meara, but this doesn’t seem likely to come off – the Bombers would need to convince him to accept a trade he’s unlikely to consider.

Gibbs should land at the Crows for Adelaide’s pick No.13 and then a future pick as well – either the Crows’ first or second from 2017, possibly with a pick from Carlton coming back.

Three deals were done yesterday.

The first was Pearce Hanley officially moving to Gold Coast in a three-way swap that saw Port give their 2017 first-round pick to Brisbane, and secure picks No.19 and No.30 in this year’s draft.

The Suns and the Lions both seem to have done well out of the deal – Gold Coast getting Hanley cheap, and Brisbane what could be a top-ten pick next year for him. But while Port have successfully got themselves back into this year’s draft, they’ve done so at what looks like a poor return – especially if they miss finals again next year.

The Roarers shared that view in our poll – 41 per cent said the Lions were winners, 33 per cent voted for the Suns, but less than 10 per cent believed Port win out in the deal.

Jordan Lewis officially joined Melbourne for a bargain price, effectively traded for a few minor pick upgrades in the latter rounds of the draft.

No surprises in the voting there – 80 per cent said that Melbourne won the deal and it’s hard to argue with that.

Lastly, Fremantle picked up Joel Hamling from the Western Bulldogs for pick 35 and a few pick swaps later in the draft.

Two-thirds of voters believed the Dockers win the trade, and if Hamling can show the kind of form he did in finals across the rest of his career that will certainly be right.

A few other little bits of news that cropped up yesterday:

Billie Smedts might be a part of the trade that gets Zach Tuohy from Carlton to Geelong.

Tom Lamb is likely to stay with West Coast despite rumours he might move home to Victoria.

Josh Green is unlikely to be traded, but could still move clubs via delisted free agency or the pre-season draft.

Toby Nankervis wants a trade to Richmond in search of greater opportunity.

Darcy Gardiner has re-signed with the Brisbane Lions for another three years, so won’t move clubs.

Collingwood are likely to pick up Melbourne’s Lynden Dunn to improve their key defender depth.

James Stewart has officially nominated Essendon as his preferred destination for a trade.

Jarryd Lyons is deciding between either re-signing with Adelaide or moving to Gold Coast.

Will Hoskin-Elliott will either move to Collingwood or stay with Greater Western Sydney, despite interest from North Melbourne.

Xavier Richards doesn’t have clear destination despite requesting a trade on Monday.

Read on twitter that he has accepted a 3 year contract at $1.5 mill. Dogs went after him as well.

Macca, Steve, GWS will be desperate to get pick 13 (Gibbs) as they will need a first round pick to get Deledio so I don't think they will be interested in a future first round pick. After pick 2 they have pick 15 then a couple of second rounders. I think they would have to at least hand over pick 15 to Richmond. However it may work out better points wise for them if instead of pick 13 we hand them our second round pick and our 2 third round picks. Pick 13 is worth 1212 points whilst picks 25, 45 and 58 are worth 1273. So maybe we can keep pick 13 and Geelongs 2017 first rounder as well.

Mds,I think GWS are paying overs for Deludio so that Richmond agree to pick up most of his salary, with GWS being given so many first round picks by other clubs this will be a tactic they start using to basically get players and technically have a higher salary cap. This deal is a win for Richmond,a win for GWS and a big loss for the rest of the league.

So they re-draft O'Meara? Essentially giving up two top-ten draft picks to retain a player who clearly doesn't want to be there? That's using your noggin'....

I think Richmond might still pay part of Deledio's salary next season if GWS give up a first round pick.

Has to be a minimum of a second rounder coming with 13 for Gibbs. 13 isn't enough on its own. There is still a lot of talk about 2016 and 2017 from Adelaide for him with a second or third rounder going back with Gibbs.

Deledio to GWS is interesting. When I heard about it being a possibility this morning, I was sceptical how the Giants could fit him in the salary cap. Even with him taking a pay cut to join the Giants, it's still going to be tight. Probably makes it essential that the Giants off-load players tomorrow to fit Deledio into the salary cap. I expect there'll be plenty of Giants joining other clubs for unders tomorrow.

Not much happening again by the looks. Someone is going to have to save Geelong from themselves, the AFL need to stop Geelong overspending first round picks, their going to be in huge trouble shortly and have no avenue to get out of it. Hawthorn seriously need to land O'meara after all the sacrifices they have made to make room. Carlton need to be a bit more realistic about Gibbs, zero all Australians, former number one pick who has never really delivered beyond adequate. You can't have a bloke who doesnt want to even be at your club there if your rebuilding and pick 13 seems enough on its own let alone a second round also. Be interesting what the dogs can get for Hrovat tomorrow.

Steve -I will wait and see the deal we make with GWS before I get too excited but at the very least we should keep pick five and thirteen, assuming we get it for Gibbs, which goes pretty well with the four first round picks we had last year.

That's fair, maybe you could try and get some of the young Hawks GC was going for

Peepsy - not really convinced that if 13 wasn't good enough for the blues that 10 would be - maybe if we get 48 but even then it is questionable.

I'm happy, young player with upside that fills a definite need position. Bonus is he can help mentor and guide our just signed international Irish rookie Mark O'Connor

Macca, I think its exactly what we will do with Geelong 2017 first rounder - send it to GWS. Will get us Marchbank, Pickett and Corr as well from what I'm hearing. Tuohy actually nets us 3, if not 4, former first round draft picks. Pickett #4, Marchbank #6, Smedts # 15, and if we get Corr # 14. I call that a win for us.

That deal doesn't sound too bad at all given Tuohy is out of contract - Touhy to Smedts is a downgrade but (Smedts does have some upside if he can get a good run with injury) but we get the upgrade on next years picks. It would be funny if the blues do pass Geelongs first round pick to GWS for the second year in a row. Also given Tuohy has the 5th longest streak of consecutive games going and Smedts has had a horrid run with injury what are the odds their luck reverses?

Stephen Wells just confirmed on AFL radio that Geelong and Carlton have agreed in principle to a trade, with the paperwork to be lodged tomorrow morning. Tuohy swaps with Smedts, plus a swap of picks (I didn't hear what the picks were - I think it was Geelong's 1st round pick in 2017 for a Carlton pick this year, maybe 2nd rounder?).
