The first ever AFLW trade period has officially kicked off today, with many interesting moves sure to be made in the next 12 days.
While we are less likely to see as many high profile trades as in the AFL, each club must delist at least five players from their inaugural list, while adding eight more.
This means numerous players will be wearing different colours in 2018 and lots of fresh new talent will be uncovered.
One star who is on the table however is Brisbane Lions key forward Tayla Harris. It has been speculated throughout the week that the 2017 All Australian is considering a move to Victoria, with Carlton the alleged front runners.
While the Blues would love to do a deal, giving star forward Darcy Vescio a quality tall forward to crumb off, it will be interesting to see if they are able to satisfy the Lions requests. Due to the nature of the league, all parties must consent to any trades that occur.
This will make it difficult for Carlton to find a suitable offer for the Lions, unless they can convince a player to sacrifice their work commitments and move to Brisbane.
Harris, a five-time junior All Australian, has made the unusual decision to focus on her boxing career and skip state football this season, with her first fight believed to be scheduled for the middle of the year.
Interestingly, the Lions have made a move for Bulldogs midfielder Emma Kearney, suggesting they are willing to negotiate under the right circumstances. However, the secondary school teacher declined the offer, choosing to remain at the Kennel.
While nobody is quite certain how this trade period will play out, we can be sure there will be plenty of action!

Not sure how Carlton get this deal done considering the deal they've just done with Collingwood.

Yeah, I call bullsh*t on that. You don't leave a good team in your home state and move to Victoria to get away from the attention. If anything there will be significantly more attention on her as a boom recruit in Melbourne than there ever would be in Brisbane, irrespective of how much she is getting paid. It's one of the more baffling player movements i've seen, especially given the season only goes a couple of months - is she going to live in Melbourne the whole year? If not it's all the more mystifying.

Im sure you.dont.mean offense but you.are kind of missing the message. Taylah obviously does not.care how how she.appears to others, she wants to.be judged on her sporting prowess.

I don;t understand how you contract players on a pittance for a short period and then you can trade them . The concept of a trade is when a player is on a multi year contract, these players should be nearly all free agents.

It sucks, bigtime. Fair play to her, it’s her career but it sucks that QLD produces one of the best players in the competition, and not even an import, grew up in the northern suburbs, spent her whole life here so far and now she wants to go play in Melbourne after just one year in the comp. Booooooo also - someone leaving Brisbane for Melbourne for less attention when playing AFL - righto, now I've heard it all. What hype. Most people in Brisbane don't even know what AFL is let alone who she is

Funnily enough, I'm led to believe she's moving to get away from the attention. She didn't enjoy being a marquee player and the spotlight that it entailed. By leaving the Lions she will make less money (not being a marquee player) but will be like any other AFLW player. Of course her talent will ensure there's naturally still hype around her, but I'm guessing her new club will shield her as much as possible.

I watched a replay of WB v Melbourne at the Western Oval on the plane back from Dublin last week. This was a revelation. The quality of the game was exceptional and while the physicality was not as dynamic as the mens game, I very much enjoyed the fluid nature of the game which ensured a highly skilful spectacle put on by these quality women athletes. I will definitely be tuning in next season to view further contests while I very rarely tune into the mens equivalent of stop start grovel ball. More power to our women who consistently out do our men in maintaining some semblance of status quo both domestically and internationally, in respect of Australian sport.

"Other than a few sycophants and their families no-one cares." What a coincidence! I feel much the same about your comment.

It said in the article she was focussing on a budding boxing career, maybe she thinks she could manage it more successfully in Melbourne?

It would be interesting to know what her reasons are. She is a Queenslander, already a marquee and playing for a good team. Might have something to do with potential media roles.
