Rory Sloane re-signs with Crows

By Stirling Coates / Editor

Adelaide superstar Rory Sloane has today rejected overtures from a host of Victorian clubs, reportedly signing a new five-year deal with the Crows that will keep him at the club until 2023 and almost certainly see him retire at West Lakes.

The Crows have called a press conference for later this morning where it is expected the news will be made official.

Sloane, a Melbourne native who played for Eastern Ranges in the TAC Cup, had long been rumoured to be considering a move home at the end of this season and was looming as one of the biggest free agents available in 2018.

Collingwood had been listed as a frontrunner for his services, while the shock retirement of Cyril Rioli was also reported to give Hawthorn the salary cap space to chase both him and coveted Gold Coast forward Tom Lynch.

But those rumours were all put to bed this morning, with the 28-year-old putting pen to paper on a likely lifetime deal with the club that took him at pick 44 in the 2008 draft.

3AW quoted Sloane as saying he was “super excited” about the future, having taken some time to weigh up options with his partner Belinda.

“This is a great footy club, and I have said many times before how much I respect and love the place and people,” he added.

The news is a rare win for Adelaide fans in what has been a terribly disappointing season. The side’s supporters have been tormented recently by several high-profile players leaving the club, citing homesickness.

In addition to Patrick Dangerfield’s much-publicised move to Geelong a couple of seasons ago, the Crows have seen Jack Gunston (Hawthorn), and Kurt Tippett (Sydney) leave the club in recent years, while Jake Lever (Melbourne) and Charlie Cameron (Brisbane) departed after their grand final loss to Richmond last year.

Sloane’s new deal means restricted free agents Lynch and West Coast defender Jeremy McGovern are the two highest-profile players left remaining on the market. Lynch is almost certain to leave the Gold Coast at the end of the year, while McGovern has put off contract talks with the Eagles until the end of the season.

Mitch is very much a contracted and required player so as much as “wants out” as you say another club are going to have to stump up something HUGE for the AFC to let him walk under contract. Freos first rounder both this and next year may do it!!

In the case of Jacobs, Jenkins, Seedsman and Cheney, none of them were actually getting a regular game (or, in some cases, any game at all) at their old clubs. Not exactly best 22, legend-of-the-club material. I don't think anybody on either side of that kind of trade would generally begrudge that player moving on in search of more opportunity if he's not getting it at his current club.

Wow - I'm stunned - was just watching an interview with Mark Bickley yesterday and he was saying Solane was as good as gone - this is a great result for the Crows - could give them a big lift for the rest of what has been a dysmal season

I find it funny how the hypocrites laud the so called ‘one club players’ and at the same time celebrate the players their club trades in. If one club players are the best you should hate having players such as Jacobs, Jenkins, Seedsman, Gibbs, Cheney and Betts on your list.

An interesting one at Freo is one of those Freo haters in WA media, Tim Gossage, who reported the "certainty" 3 days ago that Freo had conceded Cerra would leave and had begun shopping him around to interested clubs. Cerra laughed at that. "Of course (he'll) talk to his mum and dad about it" but he, Andy Brayshaw and Hugh Dixon had started looking for a house to share next year. Gossage has been silent.

This is the yin to balance the Dangerfield yang. The AFL needs more club men/ women like this. Should help the Crows regroup as a force to be reckoned with like 2017

I'm not overly keen on poaching him, to tell the truth. It'd be good from a Freo-romance perspective (and probably spice the Derby up a bit more too), but Freo do have the interceptor and distributor options already across half back, so you'd think he'd be going forward as the first go, but he's far from proven there, particularly how much coin he'd be on. There's also disrutption to team dynamics of varying degrees, whenever a big signing comes in, which can take a season or so to bed down.

Whats crazy is the number of people that take whispers, gossip and rumors as facts and then get faux outraged when it turns out differently.

The certainty with which rumour mongers claim player movement is crazy. There is never a response after they are shown to be so far off the mark.

Dal what position could you see gov filling at freo? If he left wce fair enough but looking at your list unless he went forward I don't see a position for him down back.

Don't know what happened there, must be some glitch on the site, as the post below was actually meant to be a reply to this post (even tried copying and pasting it again, but didn't work).

Yeah a lot does get floated around these days in the hungry world of content and we know what else floats. But there was the scuttlebutt last week I think, saying some Freo players (counsins' best friends' dog) are saying Jeremy McGovern is leaning mightly heavily towards a Freo deal. It'd be a pricey get, but Mitch would be even pricier, as they'd not only need to fork out the cash for Mitch, but also send some lucrative picks/players to Adelaidia given his contract status.

I hope Beams sticks around for a few more years yet - the last thing we need is another player exodus just when there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel. Brisbane have also stuck by him through injury and some tough times. On the original article - good on the Crows, that's a big signing for them and hopefully gives the club a boost of confidence.

I have heard that Jeremy is keen to play with his brother at Fremantle. Word is that Freo are currently $300K above West Coast's offer and that Jeremy is waiting to see what Gaff does to see if the Eagles can get closer to that mark. Mitch has already dangled the line to indicate he may be on his way out at the Crows. Of course, that could all just be a load of haberdash.

It's great for the Crows to have a player of the calibre of Sloane locked away, particularly after losing a number of big names in the past. Interesting also in the wake of the "mail" out there in the media and how many thought he was all but driving down the highway to Melbourne for 2019. Also interesting what this might do regarding the Mitch McGovern scenario.
