Super Rugby Round 5 teams: Five changes for Reds as Reece Hodge returns to the Rebels' starting line-up

By The Roar / Editor

Queensland have made five changes to their Super Rugby side ahead of their clash with the Sunwolves this Saturday, opting to rest Wallabies duo Izack Rodda and Taniela Tupou.

Alex Mafi will start as the hooker for the first time in 2019, moving Brandon Paenga-Amosa to the bench.

For the Melbourne Rebels, Reece Hodge will make his first start of the season on the wing, forcing Marika Koroibete to the bench for the side’s clash in South Africa against the Lions.

The Brumbies have been dealt a big blow ahead of their Round 5 derby with the NSW Waratahs, after star Wallabies duo David Pocock and Allan Alaalatoa were both ruled out with injury.

While the Brumbies are yet to publically name their squad, AAP reports the pair were both injured in the ACT’s last-gasp loss to Melbourne last weekend and won’t front up for the Friday night clash in Canberra.

The Waratahs have made one changes for the Round 5 derby clash, with the late withdrawal of Karmichael Hunt big news. While Curtis Rona had originally been dropped for Alex Newsome, he returns to the side on the wing, with Israel Folau moving back to fullback and Kurtley Beale shuffling into the centres.

There’s a real prospect of having a sole win by the team they leave for SA.

I think Ben Lucas filled in at 10 for QC in 2012 while QC was injured? Whoever it was I was impressed by the really solid job they did. That kind of performance would be enough to give a quality pack and some powerful backs a show. Despite the quality of this pack I am wondering if they are playing to previous season's playbook when the game has moved on slightly?

Yeah i thought he was going to be the next big thing......He was given first shot at 10 when Cruden was injured but just never nailed it down and his baby bro took over after a few matches. he reminds me a bit of Donald the way he plays so he's certainly no donkey

Lucas is a very good prospect. He's not a big kid but will fill out in time. His weakness is his out of hand kicking which should be focal point for Aldred. Lucas is Jim McKays call and it's a good one although I'm sure Jim would rather ease him in steadily off the bench it's really not an option at the moment. I feel for Hamish Stewart who seems to lack pace and ball playing skills, he's a square peg in a round hole for all backline positions. His best option might be to hit the gym hard and go back to openside flanker.

Mafi will be trussed up like Hannibal Lecter and released when the whistle blows. The Sunwolves have all been briefed to best in their best behaviour in the presence of Mafi's family. All reasonable precautions have been taken.....what could go wrong?

I have found the season so far pretty dispiriting, largely because of the self inflicted wounds at 10. However, if Qld can settle on a 10 for a few games in a row and construct a simple game plan for that 10 then they have the players to be a handful. This tournament can turn quickly for sides and it isn't too late for Qld. Wanting to have reasons to believe in Thorn but not getting much to date. Looking forward to having a good look at Lucas at 10. He looks to have some potential. This game could have a big impact on the rest of Qld's season, psychologically. Here's hoping.

Lucas strikes me as a player who does the basics very well and it's good too see young AUS players do that,I think the Reds have got a player with huge potential. Hockings is another who as the season goes on will get better along with AYS,they my tips for well over 50 test caps for wallabies in the future. Would have liked too see CFS or Naivalu alongside Kerevi and either Dunguna or another future talent Eadie on the wings,I dont know much about Hardy. Reds fans should stay positive, what I noticed about the first 3 games is how hard the players took the losses, Its as if they lost a final. I see their reaction as a big positive. I am even more convinced after the Reds losses than before season started, that the Reds is a sleeping giant and will stand up.

" Japan back-row Amanaki Mafi is set to end his Super Rugby exile after being named in the Sunwolves squad for Saturday’s clash with the Reds in Tokyo on Saturday. Mafi has been named on the Sunwolves’ replacements bench and will make his debut for the Japanese outfit if he sees action against the Reds. The 29-year-old still faces serious assault charges stemming from an alleged altercation with former Melbourne Rebels team-mate Lopeti Timani in Dunedin last year, with the matter still before the court. While initially banned from training with his Japanese Top League club, Mafi was added to the Sunwolves’ roster last week and, as expected, was named to face the Reds. " Sunwolves: 15 Jason Emery, 14 Gerhard van den Heever, 13 Sione Teaupa, 12 Michael Little (c), 11 Hosea Saumaki, 10 Hayden Parker, 9 Jamie Booth, 8 Rahboni Warren Vosayaco, 7 Dan Pryor, 6 Ben Gunter, 5 Tom Rowe, 4 Uwe Helu, 3 Hiroshi Yamashita, 2 Atsushi Sakate, 1 Pauliasi Manu Replacements: 16 Jaba Bregvadze, 17 Sam Prattley, 18 Asaeli Ai Valu, 19 James Moore, 20 Amanaki Mafi, 21 Keisuke Uchida, 22 Rikiya Matsuda, 23 Semisi Masirewa

Hi Everybody, Bryce injured his ribs in the game against the Saders and as per our new Reds medical guidelines, injuries will not be rested and will be treated with 500ml of cement daily, taken orally, hence Bryce playing against the Tahs. Jordan Petaia will be playing next week in a specially designed moon-boot with molded studs. P.S. Bryce will be absent for the Sunwolves game due to a severe colon blockage.

From the little i have seen Isaac Lucas looks to be the right guy for the Reds to be at 10. His set-up of Sautia's try was a masterclass in great basics, well executed. Most NZ super-rugby midfielders might have set up that try, but maybe only one or two other Oz midfielders could have. Not because it was hard, but because to straighten, draw the defender, and pass accurately is not in their skills. Most aussies would have botched the pass or run across and killed the overlap. My fearless prediction is that...... Lucas has found his position!

I am betting that if he injuries his neck again, it would not be himself doing the injuring. All the lip service and faux outrage at incidental head contact, and there are still deliberate head wrenches still going unpunished.

Yes Jez, I have similar memories. Also, when bringing my sons to a junior fan day the sight of legs more akin to trees than human limbs. He was never the full package back in those days. But he did have some ruck exploding capability.
