Australia release Cricket World Cup 2019 uniform, throwing it back to World Series Cricket

By The Roar / Editor

While we wait for Cricket Australia to name their squad for the World Cup in the coming weeks, one more piece of the puzzle has been revealed, with the jersey being announced on Tuesday afternoon.

In what appears to be an attempted throwback to the days of World Series Cricket, Australia have gone with the mostly yellow colour scheme, complete with green on the sides, sleeves, collar and v-neck part of the shirt.

Now, we aren’t going to lie. They look to have missed the mark just a little bit with no buttons in what would be a complete throwback to the late 70s and early 80s, but hey, kudos for trying to pay respects to the past.

For fans of Australian cricket, it will seem like the uniform was worn only a little while ago, and that’s because it almost was.

Australia used a retro jersey against India at home last summer, and this is eerily similar to that outfit, although it had a green stripe across the chest, rather than green sleeves.

So popular was the decision to use an older kit, Cricket Australia started an online voting competition to decide the uniform which will be worn next summer, with the 1999 World Cup uniform winning out.

Australia will head into the 2019 World Cup on the back of eight straight ODI wins as they look to defend the crown won on home soil in 2015, having recovered from 2-0 down to beat India 3-2, before breezing past Pakistan 5-0 in the United Arab Emirates.

The squad for the tournament must be named by April 23.

You do know the difference from 80’s and 90’s don’t you?

There is something ugly and disjointed about the collar and the closed top front of the shirt as if the collar was added as an afterthought. Besides it was those big 70's - early 80's moustaches that really carried the uniforms. Virtually all the big players had one at one time or another (of course there were exceptions though - Kim Hughes, Geoff Lawson, Hoggy and Thommo). Not even sure even having moustaches will help this uniform though.

I really do wish all teams had the same template and just the colours differed between teams, but in the absence of that anything simple is best. Its quite different to the early world series cup kits, but certainly reminiscent. Not that the uniform matters, but its something in the build-up to the extended champions triophy masquerading as a world cup.

Do we need to win the first couple of games to unlock other kits?

I voted for the one with lighting stripes. This is rigged, Putin and his hackers at it again.

No issues with the concept but the execution is pretty budget. The font looks like something a park cricket club would have stenciled on their kit and the writing is a different shade of green to the green panels on the shirt itself (which should be darker).

As long as the 2019 guys don't play throw back cricket, it doesn't really matter what they wear.

I did joke that we are playing to win the 1996 world cup with our strategy of picking solid players who can steer the side to 250+ scores. Now we will look the part too!
