Which AFL coach should be the next to go?

By The Roar / Editor

The first AFL coaching change since Round 20, 2017 has finally happened, with Brad Scott stepping down as North Melbourne on Sunday.

After an unusually long period of no coaching changes, there’s every chance his sudden departure opens the floodgates on a raft of moves – especially given the Roos are rumoured to be on the hunt for an established replacement.

Who should be feeling the most heat on the hot seat?

Before the season, most people would’ve said Brendon Bolton or Alan Richardson – but should more people be on that list?

What about John Worsfold or Simon Goodwin? Both coaches have been at the helm of desperately disappointing teams all year. What about Don Pyke? John Longmire?

We got Roar AFL expert Marnie Cohen jumped into the discussion on our Game of Codes podcast to run over the list of all the coaches who should be nervous.

Listen to the debate:

Brad Scott started coaching North Melbourne in 2010, coaching 211 games for 106 wins and 105 losses. The highlight of his coaching career was easily taking the club to surprise back-to-back preliminary finals in 2014 and 2015.

But the Roos were unable to make the finals after their surprising list upheaval in 2016. With the club struggling through ten rounds after some offseason action, Scott said it was his time to go.

Lions Home Games: Eagles, Power, Pies, Swans, Crows, Hawks. 4 top 8 sides and 2 perennial finalists. All easy huh?

Jasper would be glad to have a gig at all and Jarred is so busy counting his piles of cash he may not have noticed there was a change of coach.

Nathan Basset no way. Port should get rid of him and Ken and Voss. Schoffield can then pick his own team of assistants.

"Carlton's money funding the Pies' next De Goey signing' This statement is false. The soft cap is football department spend only, player payments are not included. The soft cap only becomes an issue for the minnow clubs that cant afford the Tax, like North, Carlton have far more to lose by keeping the cancer that currently coaches the side.

So as a preliminary and semi didn't suit your opinion we are now averaging everything Sheesh. Essendon aren't an amazing list when daniher is not there, there are alot of alright players like Heppell that aren't superstars, just cast a critical eye and you'll see it so woosh is doing an alright job with what is available, I don't understand why ppl claiming to know footy are shocked with that list and injuries Essendon are just a middle road team like quite a few in the comp.

The 18th placed finish occurred because WC prioritised culture ahead of wins. Winning was not the priority back then. The club carried a dramatic cultural rebuild from the inside out. This is well documented and clearly the 18th place finish was due to these factors and is an outlier. His last season wasn’t good but he had major personal problems at home which I believe were significant contributing factors. Woosha kept telling people that the list was in great shape and that he was building a list and club that could contend for premierships and that’s exactly what has happened. If the Dons give him time and if he’s up for the task they will do well to stick with him. He’s not the best game day coach granted but he is a great leader of men. He took over a club in turmoil and he hasn’t had a straight crack at it. This seemed like the year and it is not over. We all saw how strongly they came home last year. Injuries haven’t helped.

I would not want Scott, Longmire, Hinkley, Lyon, Pyke, Bolton or Woosha coaching my team, i reckon there all finished. Probably chuck in Cameron, Richardson,Beverage and Goodwin as well.

What about when my team loses and destroys me emotionally? That's the nature of the beast, we're emotionally attached to our clubs so when we feel someone is not doing the best that can be done we want accountability. Tough luck, you took the bucks now give me a premiership.

Hinkley will be gone if Port don't make the 8, our list profile is ready to go, we can't waste another year. I'm personally sick of watching him get out coached once his switch the ball plan doesn't work.

I've never heard more excuses for a team that's won 3 of their last 40-odd games. It's pathetic. Questions should be asked whenever a team has won less than 20 of their past 40 games. Carlton have lost 37.

I think there is something to your observation, but the appearance of not giving full effort comes from a lot of activity without direction. I see part of Carlton’s on field problems as being too many players trying to cover for others around them. Being third man in to assist is great when it works but creates a free man that good teams can exploit. I think this has been a factor in Carlton’s late game fades, then a couple of really poor games below their potential. At the moment the Blues need to play their own roles. Steven Covey spoke of the need to sharpen the saw to stay at your best, at the moment and for the last few seasons I feel a lot of Carlton’s best have been used relentlessly and unless their long term welfare is considered they will have short careers, or leave to go to clubs where they will not have such a high workload.

Don Freo

No, Menegola. He had chronic injuries. They recruit big blokes in the hope they come on. Meek might in 2 or 3 years...Jones won't.

Don Freo- if you say they are not AFL level why did Freo recruit them? Menagola was not injured for three years, maybe one at the most, i think your getting him mixed up with Harley Bennell.
