Wallabies to wear Indigenous jersey as alternate World Cup strip

By The Roar / Editor

The Wallabies will wear a new Indigenous jersey at this year’s Rugby World Cup in Japan.

After unveiling their ‘home’ strip for the tournament yesterday, Rugby AU released a second jersey featuring an Indigenous design later on. The alternate uniform will be worn during the Wallabies’ group-stage clash against Uruguay on October 5.

It’s the second such strip the Wallabies will year, following the first Indigenous jersey which debuted in 2017 against New Zealand in Bledisloe 3 and was worn again for a Test against England last year.

Unlike the first, which largely followed the traditional colour pattern of a gold shirt with green shorts, the 2019 iteration is a predominantly green outfit with gold fading into the Indigenous patterning around the shoulders and waist.

The jersey will be officially unveiled at a media event this morning.

What are your thoughts on the new Indigenous jersey, Roarers?

I think they should change the green bits to gold and the gold bits to green, like a photo negative. This way we get a gold home indigenous jersey.

Indigenous refers to both Aboroginals and Torres Strait Islanders is the difference. Aboriginal doesn’t include Torres Strait Islanders the same way.

It pretty much means the same thing. Aborigine = Indigenous but they prefer Indigenous .The word Aborigine means “original inhabitant” in Latin so applies to many. He proudly says he's an "Aborigine". It's the noun not the adjective.

Good point made by another here. Rory Arnold could also have added relevance to this jersey launch. After the posse yesterday we could have had more than Kurtley in the shot to inspire interest. What a picture big Rory woulda made towering over lil’ Kurts. Missed a trick there RA.

Yeh, the Kangaroos are the Champions of a World that includes 2.25 OZ States, one NZ city and a few counties of England.

I’d like you to propose ONE other indigenous representative who you would have promote the jersey. Matt Hodgson - though that would create a whole new argument. But then I have no problem with Beale demonstrating it

Mea culpa, Patto and cheers. I had no idea Rory Arnold was indigenous. I would 100% agree with you that, of the two, he is in superior form.

I was talking more about his being pictured in the jersey was important than he should be selected based on his race. I'm a firm believer that token selections on any non performance basis do more to damage whatever message is trying to conveyed. My opinion, wrong or not, remains that he could still potentially earn it on merit. But like you said, nothing wrong with differing opinions. I am aware it's not a popular one.

For mine, he’ll always be remembered for his off field performance (“would you fcuk that?”), his part in making Link walk away in disgust. Role model? I hope not.

Pardon my ignorance, but when would Australia be required to wear an away strip at the World Cup? EDIT: Against Uruguay. Never mind.

I wish it was ABORIGINAL not INDIGENOUS. I understand why, it includes non aboriginal people from the islands north of the mainland, all that. But ABORIGINAL is a strong ballsey name. Indigenous is sort of politically correct, sanitised.Kurtley Beale doesn't say ' l'm indigenous ' ,no way. He proudly says he's an ABORIGINAL, an Australian Aboriginal. Just sayin'.

Rory Arnold is indigenous, on current form he has more right to wear and promote that jersey than Beale does.

This jersey is good news to this fan. Appreciate that Kurtley’s selection is contentious but I would have him in my squad competing for a bench spot.
