2019 AFL Power Rankings: Round 12

By Liam Salter / Roar Guru

Ah, the bye weeks. Notoriously the most difficult time to write these rankings – pushing teams up or down when they haven’t played always unnerves me, but alas, the rankings must continue. A short but dramatic week, this one was.

Last week: 1
Would’ve been nervous at quarter time, but absolutely dominated the 2017 premiers in the ravenous remainder of the clash. They’ve got 11 wins, one loss and sit two games clear on the top of the ladder. But absolutely nobody should be pronouncing them premiers just yet. This competition is just too unpredictable.

Last week: 4
I mean, they were facing an opposition deficient in a lot of areas, but I was still impressed by the Magpies’ efforts. Some very good play in the midst of the game, and they’re deservedly second on the ladder.

Last week: 2
Bad loss, but not a bad loss – if that makes sense? What I’m gathering from most Eagles fans is that only a very small percentage were concerned about their loss in Sydney; but is it emblematic of the Eagles’ losing trend: when they lose, they lose big.

Last week: 3
Oh, GWS. Dropping a match like that – a match in which they were favourites – after a good few weeks would be frustrating. Still in the box seat to be in the top four come the end of the season, though.

Last week: 5
Oh no. Perhaps they went in a little complacent, perhaps they were genuinely surprised by the strength of Carlton. Whatever the reason, it was an inopportune loss in a season where they will want as many wins as they can get.

Last week: 9
Very fine win, and a good demonstration that the Crows are still an excellent side. The Crows’ explosive final ten minutes showed they dug deep to win, and I’d have them heading into next week’s clash against Richmond the favourites.

Last week: 6
Injuries be damned, I’m incredibly worried about the Tigers right now. Of course, they could shake off a run of worrying form and continue a run for top four, or the Geelong loss could exemplify their worrying fortnight and be the beginning of a rotten patch.

Last week: 7
Had the bye this week. But they still lost: losing Alex Pearce for the year and then Rory Lobb for a long while are very, very bad injuries for the club.

Last week: 8
Had the bye after their trip to China last weekend. Now seems as good a time as ever to dust off this classic.

Last week: 12
Good, but almost commonplace, win up on the Gold Coast. Many pundits had pegged this as a danger game, but North’s form meant it would have been a huge upset if they’d lost. Big test against GWS next weekend. Win it, and Rhys Shaw will move to 3-0 at the helm.

Last week: 10
Had the bye this week.

Last week: 11
Had the bye this week.

Last week: 13
Had the bye after their trip to China last weekend.

Last week: 15
Yeah, very good win. Never mind the fact that the Eagles perennially struggle at the SCG, a win like that deserves praise nevertheless.

Last week: 14
Had the bye this week.

Last week: 18
David Teague, welcome to coaching Carlton. A fine win, made all the more special by the fact that Patrick Cripps clinched the three Brownlow votes during that clash. I wouldn’t be surprised if they make it two on the trot against the Dogs next weekend.

Last week: 16
I’ve been trying to avoid the “Gold Coast are reverting back to typical form” argument, but losses like this make this season seem like a one step forward, two step back kind of situation. A lot of things going right for this football club, but another couple of wins between now and the end of the season would be fantastic.

Last week: 17
It’s difficult winning games when displaying some of the deplorable skill that the Demons displayed against Collingwood. To their credit, they did provide some fight in the second half, but it was another thoroughly disappointing day for the Demons.

Just curious about the rationale of North jumping Hawthorn and Essendon, who both had the bye. Surely a Roos win over the Suns doesn't suddenly mean the are more 'powerful' than two clubs who had no opponent and were previously ranked higher? I can understand the Crows and the Swans jumping bye teams because they knocked off good opponents. But... North?

It’s killing me seeing the cats top the rankings week in week out. But who can deny their awesome form. Collective as a team I see them as the tigers of 17,18 and the hawks of 13-15. This doesn’t guarantee a flag as history has shown however u can only do what u can do at this time of year and the cats are doing it well. Great team balance , injection of personnel that have fitted in well and superstars that have regained the hunger. Danger became new dad last year so it took its toll. Everyone thought kelly might just go through the motions this year and go over West next year. However he has taken game to new level. Duncan regained some great form. Hawkins and Ablett killing it. If any tuhoy and Selwood down a touch but still ticking along nicely. If I was a cats supporter I would be excited and nervous all in one but isn’t this why we are fans of the great game

Cats- Premiers. Pies- next best no doubt. GWS- away loss. Cows- good win @ home. WC- bad loss and bad percentage. Lions- that hurt. Tigers-tired time. Port- Dixon will be a big in. Freo- injuries to Pearce and Lobb ouch. Well done to the Roos Swans and Blues. Swans looking like a late run.

Absolutely there is no sure thing. Hawks in 2013 won the minor premiership and then flag via a 5 point preliminary final win. Collingwood in 2010 won both after a drawn grand final. Indeed the last "Sure thing" to win both the minor premiership and it's finals with all wins coming by at least 1 goal was Essendon back in 2000.

Yeah, agreed AD. • 2018 premiers lost three straight (rounds 13, 14 and 15) and the top H&A team didn’t even make the GF. • 2017 premiers lost four straight (rounds 6, 7, 8, and 9) and knocked of the top H&A team in the GF. • 2016 premiers never won more than 3 H&A games in a row and also knocked off the top H&A team of the season in the GF. NOTE: This is the only time since the current top 8 began in 2000, that a team outside the top THREE won the flag. And fourth has only contested 2 GFs in that time. • There’s only been one team finished first after the H&A to win a flag in the last 8 years.(it happened 5 times in the 11 years prior to that tho) So, as you say AD, it’s crazy to make mid-season predictions on the premier anymore. September really is a different season .

Yeah, I haven’t even needed to move Geelong for a fair while now. But I’m certainly not trying to disparage them; I was just trying to articulate that it’ll be crazy to declare them premiership certainties at the moment. Power Rankings are still kinda fun for me, though: besides Geelong they’re still fairly unstable this year.

Wonder which will happen first ... Cats fall out of the top spot or AD runs out of backhanded complements directed at them? I don't disagree with you this week AD ... no one has won a flag until GF day and the final siren has sounded but it just seems you want Geelong to fail. Seems like it is killing you to have them up there. In a way power rankings are not as fun this year because there really is no debate about top slot right now. Still time for it to change ... getting less likely as the weeks roll on though. I do miss debating where my side should slot in.

Brissie should have dropped about 8 spots, they got beaten by Carlton AD, Carlton. Happened to Port a couple of years back and cost us a finals berth, I hope that's not the case for the Lions.
