The halfback NSW must pick for Game 3 who nobody's talking about

By The Roar / Editor

Brad Fittler would be keen to keep his Origin squad together after their Game 2 demolition job but, unfortunately, injury means he’ll almost certainly need a new halfback.

Nathan Cleary badly rolled his ankle before half time and will almost certainly not be able take the field for the series decider.

So who takes his place?

As always, Mitchell Pearce’s named has been tossed up despite wild objection from Blues fans (and equally wild encouragement from Maroons supporters), as has Souths halfback Adam Reynolds and even second-half replacement Wade Graham.

But there’s one solid selection everyone’s ignoring.

We were joined by Roar NRL expert Mary Konstantopoulos on the Game of Codes podcast to explore all of New South Wales’ options ahead of Origin 3 – including naming the left-field selection nobody’s discussing.

Listen to the discussion:

After being roundly criticised for making wholesale changes to the side that narrowly lost Game 1, a 38-6 obliteration in Game 2 saw his decisions validated and virtually everyone in the lineup punch their tickets to ANZ Stadium.

David Klemmer’s recover from injury will make things interesting, as will the possibility sensationally dumped centre Latrell Mitchell returning.

I agree, simply because regardless of the outcome anything that did not go right will be Pearce's fault no matter how well he plays.... You blokes forget that for the first time in a long time NSW has a better forward pack than Qld

Maloney has the ability to instantly forget mistakes and that's a great quality. My Hubby and a friend, who worked in a company in I.T. made a 2 million dollar mistake, it wasn't how costly the mistake but how they rectified it that earned them a promotion. Costly mistakes happen in Origin, it's how, and hiw quickly ou forget them and move on is what makes a winner. Maloney is a bombshell, a Player that can move on quickly, that counts in Origin.

Wade Graham did at great job in Origin and he was instrumental in keeping the pressure on, and the result in a do-or-die for NSW, levelling the series. Heroic efforts in my humble opinion.

Come on, has to be Keary! He's the best half NSW has Cleary has not been good and his injury is a blessing in disguise for NSW. Keary like Maloney is a winner, he's won premierships for Souths and Roosters and until his injury was the best half in the competition... Should not even be a debate.

I forgot to throw in Adam Reynolds (when fit) behind Walker. He doesn't have the fitness though for game 3.

Walker got one chance how many has Mitchell Pearce had? Walker is used to playing with Adam Reynolds as the dominant half. In game 1 he was paired with Cleary who also had no idea how to control and direct the attack. How do you think Cleary would have gone with Maloney instead of Cleary? Also, even Roosters stalwart Phil Gould said the Roosters trio of Tedesco, Cordner and Mitchell did Walker no favours. Gus pointed out that Walker had approached them during camp and asked how they wanted to play, when and how would they like to get the ball? Gould said THAT is a 5/8's job, to make the players outside him look good. Gould said the Roosters trio put it back on Walker and said how do YOU want to play? You lead and we'll follow. Gould said that effectively left Walker in the dark clutching at straws. When Walker came back on he set up the try for Jake T. by find a weakness in the QLD defensive line and putting Cam Murray threw a gap before he drew the defence and laid the ball on a platter for Jake T. to score under the posts. How can people still call for Mitchell Pearce to get yet another chance after SO MANY while Walker hasn't even had a second chance?

Problem playing Wade Graham is that he is short of match fitness, I would rate Townsend before Walker. Some players fit with their team & play well, but out of that environment they do not cope ...I think Walker may be one of those players ...

I like the idea of Townsend for this game. Ticks a lot of boxes. I think he would be happy to play to a simple game plan of make his tackles and help Maloney in attack. He won a premiership with Maloney and has worked with Graham. Backup goal kicker if needed. A good, dependable footballer. Probably a low error count. Seems calm and good under pressure. Pearce - too big a gamble. Could work, but the pressure on him would be enormous and could badly effect his game and effect the mindset of others around him. Not what NSW needs. A shame, he can be a very good footballer at times but the fortunes of Origin have not treated him kindly.

So perhaps instead of one president you can have two consuls just like in ancient Rome. I call shotgun on the role of Tribune though because I get to use my veto. And I veto Townsend to partner Maloney for Origin but I would still pick him ahead of Pearce. IMO the current pecking order is Keary, Graham, Walker, Brooks/Moses/Townsend (flip a coin) and then Pearce.

The fans have mentioned Chad Townsend. Whether it's here or on another site like LU. The media on the other hand wouldn't even know if Townsend exists. And it makes sense as both Maloney and Townsend have won a GF together. Yes, Maloney and Pearce have also won a GF, but Pearce does have mental scarring with not getting the job done at origin.

Well Chad's come out and said, the vacancy should go to Maloney and with Wade moved to 5/8. On the other hand, Pearce has come out and said 'I'd love to play'... that sends shivers up my spine because if Pearce gets the nod, that could unravel all the momentum NSW has mustered and toads just might start to sense some blood in the water. The fact that they're considering Pearce is just dangerous - for themselves that is

Chad Townsend seems to be getting better with age and I don't really know how he would go in SOO. If the punters got their way for game two we might have had Jarrod Coker and Josh Morris in the centres but I reckon Freddy is doing a better job of selecting a team the QLDERS don't want to play against than the punters. I'm tipping Pearce to play really well if selected.

Con, I am not a Sharks supporter but if you have read any of my posts in regards to origin selections I have clearly stated that I have been totally flummoxed as to why they picked Cleary over Townsend. I love watching Townsend play, he is so calm & focused & he never lets the odd error get the better of him

I never listened but the only person, if they are serious is Chad Townsend ...... As I stated when they picked Cleary, my choice would have been Chad Townsend. Sadly Keary got injured because in m,y opinion the Keary Townsend combination would have worked beautifully and a Maloney Townsend combination just as lethal. We forget that when Pearce was out for some time at the Roosters Maloney carried that team and he has played in two winning premiership teams and is a big game player. Townsend & Maloney played side by side in a Premiership win. Townsend would handle Origin with ease
