How do you rate Mitchell Pearce's Origin 3 performance?

By The Roar / Editor

He was the man on everyone’s lips ahead of the State of Origin series decider.

Mitchell Pearce. New South Wales’ boogeyman, Queensland’s bunny. Cursed, hopeless, unlucky.

Pearce of 18 Origin matches for five wins. Pearce of seven lost Origin series.

The Roosters-turned-Knights halfback is easily one of the most maligned players in the history of the series, making his inclusion for last night’s series decider beyond intriguing.

In the end, however, he didn’t score the match-winning field goal like Blues fans had hoped – or throw the intercept pass Maroons fans were waiting for.

So how do you rate the halfback’s performance in the series decider?

We were joined by Roar NRL expert AJ Mithen on our Origin special episode of Game of Codes to analyse New South Wales’ Game 3 performance as well as what role Pearce played in the win.

Listen to the discussion:

While Pearce may not have necessarily scored the match-winning points himself, it was his ambitious wide pass out to Tom Trbojevic in the last minute that set up Blake Ferguson’s incredible run down the sideline and James Tedesco’s series-winning try.

He was very good in defence and overall effort. But I think most people were expecting more. There was a lot of discussion about him having matured as a player and how the game had slowed down for him. I don’t think he played that much better than his previous origin games.

His defence has always been very good in origin.

“Setting up” the final try? He threw a pass to Tommy T, and is wasn’t even a good pass.

Who cares. He cost the Roosters our entire season in 2016 with his juvenile drunken puppy poking BS. If you remember, this was AFTER he was supposed to have matured and AFTER he had become part of the “leadership” group. Good riddance. The sooner NSW can bin him forever and get Keary and Maloney or Cleary together into the NSW team the better. All that angst about giving Fergo another crack after past misdemeanours ... and then they bring Pearce back and the media decide this is a story of redemption, with no self awareness of their hypocrisy. I don’t care how he played but i think it is hilarious that he is being cheered for throwing a pass. Who else could have thunk of doing that?

It’s my opinion, that all you’re doing is trying to win points on the internet. As if your opinion that opinions don’t matter, is the only opinion that matters.

Brandy looked at all the player ratings for his team the next day. Everything is opinion. Dropping latrell mitchell was what was best for nsw, thats the opinion of the coach. Picking wallace for origin, it was of the opinion from qlds coach that he was the man for the job. Opinions in the news. Opinions from journos. Opinions from Paul on the Roar. Opinions everywhere. Did you ever wonder that the purpose of ratings and opinions, is to generate discussion? To talk about rugby league? To exchange opinions? To give our opinions of the players? To give our opinions on the opinions of the coaches?

why? More to the point Ethan, what difference does it make? Any rating is simply an opinion expressed a different way and it will have no bearing on this SOO series or the next. I'm sure Freddie & Kevvie aren't too concerned, nor are the players most likely.

I was just going off what others said. To be honest I didn't start watching the game until 10pm as had to work and 9 doesn't have streaming rights so had to wait until I could watch on Kayo. You're probably right all the work was done by Turbo, Fergy and Tedesco for that try. Pearce played exactly as I expected him to play. Bland

Excellent point. There were times where Farah didn't take the right options while Gallen would take two hit ups in a set inside the opposition's 20. I am far from a Pearce fan, but he wasn't the only one that looked average during Qld's dominance.

Couldn’t agree more. His pass didn’t create the line break and I don’t even think he’d be credited with a LBA for it. He was average and when NSW needed direction and a calm head (you know standard halfback play) in the last 10 minutes he provided nothing and actively contributed to the game almost slipping away. If not for Ferguson’s last minute heroics this would have been the exact same script as most of his other Origin games.

I think you are spot on with the gallan and Farah point. Somehow they never became scapegoats the way MP did when they probably should have.

7/10. Overall, I thought his game was ok but not great. However, he definitely proved his inclusion in the team to be worthy through his last pass that was a significant part of the winning try. Queensland defence improved from game 2 so NSW didn't have the same time and space they had in game 2. This limited Maloney's game I believe. NSW were fortunate to have Pearce to take some pressure off Maloney. It will be interesting to see who is selected next year. Form at the time will have a large bearing on who is chosen. Also, Brad Fittler seems to consider skills, personal attributes and how this all fits into a winning team in his selections. Maloney is off to England so I have read. Nathan Cleary and Luke Keary will be strong contenders. If Pearce continues to improve at the Knights he could play a role.

I'm not going to be as harsh on Maloney as some , his goal kicking was still on point , even when the result was sealed he still landed his final kick , speaks volumes of the champion that he is... Mitchell Pearce was solid without being spectacular , nice vision for the last try. Six out of ten.

He was no better or worse than Cleary. I thought he looked a bit nervous in the first half and was quickly shoveling the ball from side to side. He was better in the 2nd half but lets just say thank god NSW had Tedesco and Cook.

He set up nothing Adam. He threw an obvious cut out pass to an overlap that had developed on the right. Subsequent passes were then thrown by Turbo and Fergo, and Fergo created an incredible break before Teddy was given a free run to the line. It was all Fergo with the match winning performance there. Seriously , if we are wrapping Pearce on that pass we are very desperate for him to be forgiven for all his past under achievement. He had 9 runs for 29 metres, made 24 tackles but missed 4, was out of position for a couple of kicks that then pressured Maloney, and he created nothing more ? His performance was a bare pass, mainly for not creating any real disasters this time. Cleary has nothing to worry about next season.
