With Coniglio off the market, where do the dominoes fall?

By The Roar / Editor

One of the biggest splashes of this year’s AFL trade period has occurred months in advance, with big fish Stephen Coniglio re-signing with the GWS Giants for seven years at close to a million dollars a year.

Carlton and Hawthorn were supposed to be in the box seat to lure the midfield star away from Homebush, but will now have to look elsewhere or bide their time in their quest for a new star.

With what was set to be one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle placed well in advance, what impact will that have on the rest of the trade period?

We were joined by Roar AFL expert, editor and trade enthusiast Josh Elliott on the Game of Codes podcast to make a call on how this season’s trade period will play out in light of Coniglio’s move.

Listen to the discussion:

There are plenty of big names left on the market, with Tim Kelly, Brad Hill, Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti and more potentially on the move,

It’s never too early to speculate with trade time, so we did our best to see how things will all play out this October.

Sam Powell Pepper chased by Essendon could see a trade swap for Fantasia, with Ryder added to it

If you tried to argue that, you'd lose the argument.

How do you figure that he's been better because of Ross? You could argue that he was a good player in a great team which made his arrival in a poor side look better, hence winning the Freo B&F in his first year?

Why the hold up with Walla? Don't the Bombers value him? Surely this excitement machine adds thousands of members to the club. Come on Bombers get it done!!!

Finals isn't necessarily a primary cobsideration. Playing process to get there is important too. He helps to establish method as he provides leadership...a real Hill quality at Freo... 29 would be a good age if they get to finals by then. He'll still have 4 years left then.

He's become a lot better since his time with Ross. The market is already reflecting that. 23 was, in fact, compensation for Chris Mayne.

Looks like the Saints are fully committed if $900k is the story. Seems like he is this year's Hannebery for them. Freo will and can keep him if the deal is not right and he'll be fine to stay. He loves Freo, his life is here...his girlfriend is there. They'll find a way to make it work. Mind you, whichever club wants him will find a way to make it work too. Freo turned Lachie Weller into pick 2. The only had a first round and a 5th round pick last year and turnedLachie Neale into a pick in every round plus Hogan and Lobb. Freo will be fine. If Langdon wants to go to Melbourne, we'll do well there too because the alternative is Gold Coast.

Richmond have 3 or 4 of these types, maybe not as good but serviceable make us an offer for Butler?

I'd take Josh Bruce for cheap, but more as depth, Keath should be our main target I think, considering our backline is our weakest point (although watching Lewis Young have a good crack warms my heart) in regards to AMT, I get the feeling he's holding out for more money from the dons but he wants to stay, would be an absolute gun for us if we managed to get him though.

You are probably right, but I refer to Jake Carlisle as exhibit A of dumb trades the Saints have made, he was pick 5 or 6 as well I think, They like to pay overs.

I don't know anything about the draftees, but pick 5 seems like a lot to give away, when the Saints would be unlikely to return to finals before Hill turns 29. Teams - including St Kilda - have done stupider things. But that would be a really stupid thing to do.

Yes I meant 2 first rounders sorry, the thing Fremantle have to their advantage is a) he's contracted so they can push up the price and b) it's St kilda, as you say they've made some dumb trade decisions and probably aren't going to rectify that now. I think you're right though, they won't get what they want and the Saints pick 5 should do it.

I would be happy to part with pick 8 for Hill if he was to come to the blues.

Yes and no. That might make it easier for Freo to swallow if they do have to take unders for Hill, but they're not obliged to consider how much they gave up for him. I think it was pick 23.

Freo can't complain too much about their return on Hill as they got him from Hawthorn relatively cheaply, a second round pick in the mid 20s I think. He was obviously worth more but he wanted to go home.

I think Brodie Grundy is staying with the Pies or going to South Australia. That said, Port seem sorted in the ruck division and I wouldn't be going anywhere near Adelaide given the state of their list right now.

Two first rounders presumably, rather than pick 2. I think Freo fans are probably going to be left a little disappointed by the return they get for Hill. Obviously he's a great player but no one is going to cripple themselves to get their hands on him, particularly when this is the second time in three years he's requested a trade. Last year Jared Polec was valued at slightly less than pick 11. I think a mid first rounder might be around the mark for Hill, in what is seen as a weaker draft. St Kilda have made some stupid, self defeating trades in recent history. Surely they're not going to repeat the same mistake and cough up two first rounders for a 26 year old winger.

Is Tippa more likely to win a flag at Essendon or the Dogs? That's the question he will be asking himself. The Dogs will give him enough cash to make the decision about this question only. I reckon we'll get Alex Keath, which will be a good pick-up to strengthen the back line. Josh Bruce would be handy as a third tall forward too.
