GWS break Brisbane hearts, book prelim versus Pies

By Brandon Hutchinson / Roar Pro

The GWS Giants have advanced to a preliminary final against Collingwood next with following a three-point win over the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba.

The Giants started much better in the first to kick four unanswered goals with their physical brand of footy. Though it was off the back of Dayne Zorko’s efforts that the Lions won the term, with five goals to four.

In the second, GWS picked up their game to carry themselves to a two-goal led into half-time. They recorded five for the term with considerable efforts from Toby Greene and Zac Williams. The Lions only managed the two goals.

In the third, Lions recorded just the two again but kept the Giants to one with six behinds as they pressed on their tails into the fourth.

They managed to come back late in the final term following a goal from Allen Christensen, but it was Brent Daniels who had the hero moment, winning the game with an on-the-run banana in his only goal for the game.

Toby Greene responded well to a controversial week in the media, kicking two goals to go with 30 disposals and five tackles.

Coleman Medalist, Jeremy Cameron, secured three goals for the game with 16 disposals and six marks, with Jeremy Finlayson also kicking two for the night.

For the Lions, Eric Hipwood and Charlie Cameron were important on goals – kicking three and two respectively.

Dayne Zorko also led his side well with 25 disposals, one goal, six clearances, five tackles and 10 inside 50s.

The Giants progress to their third Preliminary-final in four years next week, coming up against Collingwood for a chance at the Grand Final.

Brisbane Lions 11.14.80
GWS Giants 12.11.83

112k in Brisbane is pretty good - only 30k less than the NRL game.

20,000 for Storm is hardly respectable in a city of 4 mill. They get more than that for the opening of an envelope! 30,000 for Brisbane Lions - now that is respectable.

I like brayshaw for the footy, not for the cricket though.

Things like the "spirit of the game" call last night are turning me off footy, it's becoming so sanitised, that was a joke.

The game was there to be won for Brisbane. Plenty of opportunities. Got some dud refereeing but so did GWS. We so often win those tight finishes at home I could hardly believe it when the late winner didn't come.

That's because you have to listen to James Brayshaw, the most turn off able commentator in a long time.

I think the Giants could at least be competitive next week, the Lions had run their race I feel.

Both AFL and NRL in areas outside their heartlands get respectable turn ups at grounds for their games. But tv audiences are woeful.
