Five ways that the Roosters will weather the Storm

By keith hurst / Roar Pro

On Saturday night the Roosters will play the Melbourne Storm in a preliminary final at the SCG.

This year the teams have been closely matched. I have read many expert opinions on who will win and believe that the Roosters will prevail for five reasons.

1. Leadership
The Storm have one leader, Cameron Smith, who is a super legend and an amazing captain. The Roosters have five leaders. They are Boyd Cordner, Mitch Aubusson, Cooper Cronk, Luke Keary and James Tedesco. Five will beat one any day.

2. Speed
The Roosters’ backline has speed to burn and great positional play. All six players in the backs can make a line break and capitalise on it with exceptional pace. I

In addition, Keary and Tedesco have rare acceleration. The Storm have three speedsters, Josh Addo-Carr, Ryan Papenhuyzen and Cameron Munster. Six against three will prevail.

3. SCG
What can not be forgotten is that the Roosters since Round 1 have been unbeatable at the SCG. This home ground is a huge advantage. Melbourne are training at an oval ground to acclimatise themselves to the shape of the ground, but I don’t think that will help.

4. Defence
On a number of occasions this year the Roosters have shown that they can defend as well as anybody on their goal-line. The slide defence in the backs has also been effective.

The Storm defence has also been very good but I believe that they will not be able to contain the speed of the Roosters’ backs as shown on grand final day in 2018.

5. Elite players
The AFL call them A-graders. I call them elite players. These players perform at a very high level consistently.

I believe that the Roosters have 11 elite players. They are the whole Roosters’ backline: Victor Radley, Boyd Cordner, Isaac Liu, Mitchell Aubusson and Sio Siua Taukeihao. The Storm have 8. They are Smith, Nelson Asofa-Solomona, Suliasi Vunivalu, Addo-Carr, Papenhuyzen, Munster, Jesse Bromwich and Dale Finucane. I think that this gives the Roosters an edge.

What one can’t determine is goal kicking. Perhaps Smith has the edge in that or grand final nerves. I think both teams are mature enough to not let nerves ruin the day.

In the end this only my opinion. The good news is Roosters don’t lay eggs so I can’t get egg on my face if I am wrong.

I agree with Brendon's comments. Good to see faith in your team but that doesn't mean disregarding the abilities of the opposition. Don't want to rehash everything Brendon said above but will add to point 5. Elite players: 10 of the starting Storm 13 are international reps; 1 of the other 3 is an origin forward + they have another international on the bench. How many elite players do they need? BTW I know roosters look similar.

TJ, obviously my grammar is the problem here ? I was trying to indicate a possible weakness in the Roosters chances against the Storm, where based on recent history, a couple of their key stars, ie Mitchell can go missing in big games , and Keary can be easily injured with head knocks.

He has had his concussion issues this year and I'm sure Melbourne will be trying to smash him every chance they get. But that's different to not showing up in big games. Only need to watch the Rabbits game and last years GF to see he has no problems handling the big games.

RoryStorm, that’s a condescending comment about the author “The quality of the article suggests to me you are young so I forgive you for that”. I’d say your reply is even more childish. Take a chill pill.

Keary goes pretty well when he is not knocked out ( or easily hurt) ! Which has become an issue for him this year. Didn't he have 6 weeks off during the season to sort out this issue ? You don't think the Storm brutes won't be looking to dump him on his head on Saturday ?

Albo please explain how you have come to the conclusion that Keary can go missing in big games? Teddy and Keary have been two of the best big game players in the last 12 months.

Not sure I would agree with any of your points as to why the Roosters will win ? Maybe the home ground experience at the SCG could be relevant ? I might have also added that the Roosters look to have a stronger bench overall than the Storm. And they have the most dangerous attacking force in Teddy. But by the same token I would rank Smith & Munster as the best leaders in big matches, whilst the Chooks key attacking weapons like Keary & Mitchell can go missing ( or easily hurt ) at times in the big games ?

The JWH stat is a bit of a myth. Most of the losses came in the 2016 season when they were also missing key players like Pearce, Cordner and Friend. No doubting he is a huge loss but Taukeiaho and Liu are more than capable of filling the void.

The author needs to take a chill pill. The quality of the article suggests to me you are young so I forgive you for that. Who knows, your team may smash Melbourne but what if they don't? If Melbourne beat your team tomorrow, will you be back here with an article about how wrong you were, or will you become anonymous? Be careful about going off before the game is even played. I remember when I was young bragging about my team was going to do this, do that. After we lost I looked and felt like a goose. I think everything points to another very close game. I'd like to say the Storm are going to win but the truth is I don't know but I'm hoping anyway.

Yeah the Oval thing is a neither here nor there. They have played against each other at the Adelaide Oval 3 times and the Storm have won the last 2.

Good to hear your opinions, out of all of your points I think that most solid is the roosters literally have got 11 elites across the park is key, even if 2 or 3 of their best players play poorly, there always seems to be someone else playing well (eg no Mitchell, great Manu / No Tupou, great Morris, no Keary, great Cronk etc). I am not sure I could say the same for Storm eg No Munster and Smith, and I think Storm are toast. Having said that if a sub par Jake Friend plays (he won't be at his best) coupled with no JWH then I think that the Storm have a great chance to win. It really depends on the day, if the Tedesco, Mitchell, Keary, Cordner all bring their A Form then the chooks can beat anyone this year - its a no brainer. If Smith, Munster, Addo Carr and Asofa-Solomona are on song then we have a game.

I'm not sure how well that formula worked when Manly flogged the Sharks in the 1st week of the finals. Where were all the elite players and leaders for Manly?

I get that this is an 'opinion' piece but surely the quality can be a bit better? I mean do you have a tiny bit of stat to back up your 'opinion'? Like The For and Against between the 2 teams, oh wait....631/300 vs 600/363. I'll let you look up who's who for yourself.

So you're a Roosters supporter right? I'll give you number 1. I mean Kenny and Jessie Bromwich are both Storm leaders, as are Dale Finucane and Cameron Munster but, you know, take your leaders.... Speed, well Fox,Munster and Papa are quick, as are Curtis Scott, Suli, Hughes... 3, yeah I'll give it to you I guess.... 4, I was of the impression the Storm were the best defenders in the competition, best For and Against, so...you lose this point. Your entitled to your opinion on elite players but the Storm did end the competition in first so you'd have to argue they have top grade players equal to, if not higher than the Roosters. I'm for blind support but not when it comes to articles. In fact, these articles can be written to favor any team. For example, reasons Storm will beat the Roosters: 1- Best player on the field 2- emotionally in it more (wanting revenge for last year) 3- Storm have been more consistent this season 4- no Storm player has been as hot and could as Latrell Mitchell 5- the JWH factor 6- The Storm are currently 1+ against the Roosters for 2019. And that was with little effort and, in my opinion, would hold more logic than yours... Up the Storm!

I think the ground is being overplayed by many. You could stick the Storm in a shipping container and they’d go well I reckon. I do recall recently seeing a stat that pointed to the Roosters playing below their best without JWH. They are the two best sides in the Comp in my opinion, but the few times Storm have lost, it’s just been by a whisker. I want to see blinders by Teddy and by Munster.
