Shane Flanagan confirmed as Dragons assistant coach

By Scott Pryde / Expert

The embattled St George Illawarra Dragons have confirmed the signing of Shane Flanagan as their new assistant coach on a one-year deal.

Following the deregistration of the former Cronulla coach for his involvement in the Sharks during a prior suspension for the drug scandal which rocked the club and competition, the NRL have confirmed he can commence at the Red V from late December.

Current Dragons head coach Paul McGregor has been under the pump for a string of poor results since he took over from Steve Price in the middle of 2014. Given Flanagan’s success at the Sharks, Dragons fans are hopeful that Flanagan can turn the club around, and McGregor was happy to have him on board.

“Shane will be a valuable asset to the Dragons’ endeavours in 2020. His success has been proven time and time again over many years and we’re glad to have him on board,” McGregor said in a statement released by the club.

2019 was a horrendous year for the Dragons, with the proud club falling to 15th on the ladder by the end of the season, despite a talented roster being on display.

Off-field problems didn’t help the Dragons throughout 2019 as they dealt with the fallout from the Jack de Belin court case, while key injuries to Gareth Widdop, Tyson Frizell and James Graham also hurt the club’s momentum. However, 15th is the lowest finish in club history, dating back to 1999.

The season’s form brought about a detailed end of season review, conducted by Phil Gould, and resulted in numerous changes to staff at the club, including the departure of Ben Hornby.

Flanagan’s arrival is expected to help McGregor at the head of the club, with a 63 per cent winning percentage during his second stint at the Sharks from 2015 to 2018, including the breakthrough 2016 premiership for the club.

Flanagan has a reputation as a tough operator, and his defensive structures at Cronulla were evident, with the Sharks finishing in the top four for fewest points conceded in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

That’s in stark contrast to the Dragons, who conceded the second-most points last season, and it’s thought fixing the defence will be one of the main tasks for Flanagan.

McGregor holds just a 47 per cent winning percentage since taking over the Dragons in 2014, with only two finals appearances, both from the bottom half of the top eight, in his five full seasons at the joint venture.

It would seem that is the case. Be interesting to watch how he handles it.

Well, Mary would have been sacked if they didn't have to pay him out so I'd guess that if they have a good year, kudos to Flanno. If they don't, Mary won't last. Mary won't get an extension so his only hope to keep getting paid is for an extended period is if he rides Flanno's coattails of success for a year.

I think that's a bit harsh, he was suspended for responding to club entreaties. A lot worse has gone on in the game.

As a Sharks fan I get that Flanagan doesn't go down well with some. However as a coach of a club he gets results because he sets standards and knows how to bring a group together. Best example was with the Fifita armband controversy leading into the 2016 finals. Somehow Flanagan managed to keep Fifita focused and he won us the GF. Very competitive and players lift for him.

Flanagan was suspended and banned from not only coaching but attending games. He refused to do any such thing. The players accepted a suspended back dated ban for the Peptides. Flanagan was at the heart of it funding Dank personally from a separate bank account not linked to the Sharks? Gee that’s legit no input to the drug program??? They lost a season of points because they were guilty. The shame and consequences he attracted to the Sharks had supporters wondering if they were going field a team. That forced the NRL and ASADA back off and back date penalties. Pull your head out of where ever you jammed it is my advice.

For some time I have been critical about Gallen. To his credit, he changed his early, grubby, playing ways but I still cannot stand what comes out of his mouth as there is very little accountability. I started to realise in the last few years that he is a student of Flanagan. All fingers point outward. Is Gal the way he is because it's a learned trait?

His most hilarious act of petulance was taking a written list of refereeing grievances into a press conference.

Fundamentally, an exonerated Shane Flanagan was found by the NRL to have had no input into the drug program..he was suspended/ disqualified for lack of appropriate governance (at a time when the club was critically short staffed) then for responding to e mails the club (predominantly) originated. Don’t know if you can pick and choose which NRL exonerations you accept based on the club you support. Cowboys were cleared by the ACC and Lancini by the NRL, as was Flanno , why do we doubt the NRL on one and not the other ?

"And breaking the “no peptides” rule while at the Sharks cost Johnny Hannah (who was in remission with cancer) his life. Someone should have gone to prison for that." wasn't this some bogus story written by known trouble stirrer Rebecca Wilson ?... the irony

I don’t know what investigation the ACC did on the Cowboys. I do believe players that had signed with the Cowboys from Manly and Sharks were being investigated about what they had taken during their time with Dank at previous clubs. The supposed investigation on Cowboys Chairman’s Lancini property group selling some “discount” property to players was laughable and discovered some players had bought them at above current market value? Laurence Lancini owns more development properties than anyone in the region. He owns many of the prime real estate being developed. Where do the players live if they can’t buy a house? If a player wants to by an investment property in North Queensland Lancini has probably got some good ones being built. Many of the players properties where flooded and that probably needs an investigation into the government approval system. Lancini a self made millionaire and doesn’t give out a red cent from what i’ve seen. Amazing that story was generated south of the border when the Cowboys were a chance of winning a Grand Final and was then thrown out by the NRL in a matter of weeks.

The fair weather fans will be the fans who return if the team starts winning again. A person who remained a fan even while the club was underperforming is a true fan and valuable to a club. They are what help clubs survive through lean periods. A club should be concerned if they leave due a decision like this.

Fairweather fans leave when something is happening that they don't like. A player comes to the club, a coach is resigned, etc. You are the very definition of Fairweather fan that runs when things aren't going well. You aren't a loss so bye bye see you when the club starts winning again

Mary has gone. He is just a figure head and mouthpiece so that Flanno can flaunt the rules again and stick 2 fingers up at the NRL. Any IT nerds out there, capture a few emails between Flanno & McGregor and make yourself a fortune selling them to the press. Anyone who thinks that Mary is now coaching the Dragons must be nuts

Actually, the dragons have decided Mary is NOT the man to coach them. This for me confirms that Mary is out the door at the end of this season. Flanagan is banned from head coaching roles this year. If he wasn't, the dragons would have signed him up as top dog. I'm a lifelong fan - I'm in two minds about this. My biggest gripe of Flanagan is his constant blame the refs garbage at press conferences

Not a case of fair weather fans. A fair weather fan leaves when the team stops winning, I am deserting them because they have just soiled the product with that piece of ...... I hope that St George Bank do the same. That man is a disgrace and should never be employed in this sport ever again.
